Magnus you are so right about the time before the internet, when going to a junkyard was an experience, if you found the parts you were looking for or not, just taking in all the sights was worth the cost of admission . Your choice of filming from dark to light was fantastic !.......Thanks

I worked with a Guy who visited there often in the 70's and once asked Rudi why he didn't sell the 500K because he could get a Million for it .Rudi responded with "I have a million in the bank,and I have this car ". At that time it say outside.

This is really special, this place has been shrouded by mystery for so long.

These cars are considered by so many (at least by car people) as a pinnacle of human design and automotive achievement. This, coupled with the emotional connections that cars have the ability to instill, makes this such a fascinating watch. It's a stark reminder that all cars are just objects, subject to the elements and decay as much as anything else. An wreck can end the life of any car, no matter the monetary or sentimental value, as well as the lives of its occupants in just an instant.

Magnus, You are a born story teller. I’d love to spend time with you hearing a few more. You are a living legend who can turn a word mate. Peace man.

I worked in the metal fabrication building at the junkyard, I was 15 years old and knew Rudy very well, about 30 percent of the porch alloys on V.W in L.A came out of that yard , the yard originally ran from Alameda to Juniper.

I hope you keep us posted on the Disposition of this Place and all the treasures.

This is photographic heaven.

Like the California town of Bodie this place needs to stay intact in a state of arrested decay. Many including my self are amazed at this collection. On the other hand the value of much, other than complete cars, is limited to another parties needs. And if that need was significantly strong these pieces would be gone already. Like Rudi many will bid at the auction hoping to catch a ride on his dream. But whether that dream ascends or spirals downward will depend upon their drive and wallet thickness as they attempt to make something of this assemblage of what individually were someone else's - broken dream. Excellent presentation BTW!

Interesting, my shop is just north of this location on Alameda. I drove by the yard a good 30 years ago and they had the doors open. Looking in was very surprising, to say the least. Thought I was seeing things all those years ago, until I came across this video! Thanks for supplying my fading memory with solid evidence!

On top of the eye popping inventory, it's one of the most orderly junkyards I've ever seen.

It’s not very often I watch a video and am completely stunned by what I’ve seen. I’ve driven by the yard a few times, I knew they had Porsche and Mercedes all over but 3 rare lambos and the ultra rare cars, wow.

Grew up around the junkyard. Uncle had one for 40 years. People would drive cars and trucks to the yard. Sell them to him. Usually rusted terribly. Engine and trans still good. Interiors often in really nice shape. Mostly with 80-100k miles. Now I live out west. Interiors are almost gone from the sun. Trim also. No rust. And drivetrains have 200-300k miles. If only they could be combined. 😮.

I could walk around and Not only admire the Cars but also the vegetation.

Appreciate the effort + creativity to put this together. Thoughtful to do it before it is gone.

You know this might be one of the few times the values actually help here, as alot of these old beasts might get fixed and put back on the road, so while they may sell for unobtanium, the parts wont, and alot of good cars are gonna end up back on the road from this sale

Hands down Best Video by Magnus to date. Wow Rudy was a cool dude and new his stuff and must have had a lot of money even back then the cost to buy and move these cars around still cost real money. Yes cheap prob paid $2000 for those SL gullwings. That alloy body car in around 1980 had to still been 10,000 25,000 the Lambos also had to have been 10,000 to 20,000 each but then again a Ferrari GTO would have been the Holy Grail in my book. Believe it or not GTOs in the early 70s traded for $8000 to $10,000. Now they are 50 Million to 100,million. Any amazing Video Magnus and that hat is Nutzzz

Hey Magnus, really enjoyed your tour. I had only seen this place in the background of parts and car auctions in the past and always wondered exactly where and what it was. I'm in Canada where all the foreign stuff left is mini Coopers and MGs, most of the Porsches have gone to the States or back to Germany so this is kind of refreshing. Cheers!

What an amazing collection of art. Something that hasn’t been touched or molested in over 40+ years is just amazing.

Well made and very interesting video, thanks. Look at how they restore old WW2 warplanes back to flying condition, and some of them were in much worse shape than the cars in this yard (pulled out of bogs after 70 years, etc.). How great Rudi had the foresight to preserve these vehicles; too bad he didn't live to realize how valuable they've become.

I was lucky enough to have been a customer of Rudi's back 45 years ago. The 600 MBZ that had cars stacked on top supplied me with window switches. In one of the barns there were 300SL roadster hard tops stacked side by side by the dozens. You have no idea what you would see walking around Rudi's. I told people about this many years ago. Rudi had one price, expensive but he knew what he had. I liked Rudi.

Read an article in a mid 80s Road and Track magazine about an auto scrap yard in NY. Apparently they scrapped around 750,000 cars per year! On top of that, they would find on average around $1.25 per car when stripping down the vehicles before crushing. Essentially a hidden paycheck of over a half a million dollars in loose change! 😮🎉

This video was excellent, very absorbing and that opening single shot was just epic. I also love the fact that Magnus went there first thing in the morning, the way a real car guy would. Like a kid getting up super early on Christmas Day.

the untold story unfolds while touring the grounds at night - the ghosts of the drivers mangled and killed in these wrecks wander the grounds dragging auto parts from their wrecks, (ala Marley’s ghost) wailing and chained behind them 🙀

Great episode, I’d kill to be at that auction just to watch the sale of some of these classic time pieces. Wish I could afford to buy an old 912.

He passed in 2001, and the yard "went quiet." I'd reckon that a lot of stuff was probably stolen out of there, since then.

While this seems romantic, there’s a reason why all of this stuff is still there and intact. Look at all of those engines, parts, shells. This guy was the most annoying hoarder you can imagine. Runs a “business” but never sells anything. I guess it’s cool to look at

Junkyards should be called forgotten history fields . Such a shame to see such iconic cars just waiting to be rediscovered and rebuilt -but where there is hope there is a chance of revival
