@@WestinZubert Yeah Gears and Gasoline is one of my go to RU-vid car channels. Been following them for years now. Like before Alex here was on Fitment Industries
"Oh hey, that's Andy from the Gears and Gasoline builds" When I saw him in the background. I guess his shop is ASM, I feel like should have known that, I know it know though.
Yep, track driving can get expensive. You do a little bit to the car, take it to the track, your times get better, things start to fail, you fix/upgrade it, and repeat the process. Welcome to the club!
Alex, you might want to carry extra rotors regardless if you are or aren't going to install new ones before the events. Just read someone saying he goes through rotors on his s2000 at trackdays/events and highly recommends others do the same.
ASM is THE famous tuner in Japan! Especially for S2000s, that's how they started their business back in 2005. How come these guys out of Wisconsin just use that name for their shop? I am surprised no one has commented on this before!
I’m heading over to buy a shirt now. Two things though… 1) At what point does the S2K become “The Car Formally Known as Clapped”? 2) Tell Dakota I’m still waiting for my Daily Fun Your Car merch. DFYC Nation baby!!!
oh men... half the stuff should have been done by yourself. Cant hire everyone to do everything. I always unseize everything before i bring it for alignment you dont want them to charge you 6 hour for just working out seize nuts/bolts... you might say its a S2000 altho it closer to a civic than a 911 they are one of the easiest car to work on. you need to be more mechanicly incline and then you'll save some $$$ .
Bro literally had his car worked on by one of the greats, this price tag is totally worth it. Imagine having top secret work on your JDM car and you complain. Bro just don't. Lol
😂 I took my car to the shop to fix my botched diy fuel pump install and install a new flex plate... They found my turbo headers cracked. 1.5k adventure turned to a fiesta. I decided to do $8k in upgrade parts/maintenance/preventative and probably will cost 7k in labor. 😢
Had an old e36 compact. Really cool car, it drove so nicely, loved it. Just had it as my daily. It was good fun. But it was in the repair shop every other week. And it started to cost a lot of money and a lot of nerves. So at one point I decided to sell it. You gotta know old cars are cool and stylish, but they're old and things will break and need replacing. You gotta be ready for that. Just my two cents, maybe I can save you some money 😅
I always wondered. Since youre driving this thing within class at GLTC that you didnt decide to tune the car for NA instead of having the turbo. Its a K24 afterall, those make great NA engines
Yep. These are all real concerns and common issues with S2K’s when getting an alignments. The adjusters are prone to seizing and need to be cut out, which isnt quick or enjoyable job. K24’s have worse oiling than F series because its a transverse engine going longitudinally, so baffled oil pan is an obvious recommendation. SS brake lines are obvious and the other things are just lol (eps/abs). Tbh, he probably saved future Alex’s life here lol.
Spending 5k on car build is like normal. I spent like 7k on trans 5k on engine 2k on turbo did a lot of the work myself but still at end of the day I ended up putting like 20k into a 20k car 😂 prob dumb but she’s almost ready for track now and that’ll be worth every penny
I just can’t believe you had all of those mods and no stainless steel brake lines. Also can’t believe you bought your s2000 for 6k since you said the price of repair came out to the same as the price of the car. Next time ship it to Spoon in Japan to do the repairs and wonder why it’s so expensive 😅.
Aren't these the guys that built gears and gasoline subie..... HMMMM MMMMM....they do good work but think SUPER HIGHLY of their own work...check Ben's bill.....calling them will run you lawyer prices!!!!!!!!
You must be doing pretty good if you’re ok dropping 70k on an old S2000. Me, I’d be buying a brand new Carolla GSR and I’d have 35k left to spare, maybe for some hair plugs? 😆 Don’t get me wrong, I love the S2000, it was the first manual car I drove but damn, that’s a lot of money.
One thing that has always bothered me is the wording behind how a lot of things go. ONE EXAMPLE is saying that “this part is prone to failure”. Yes, every part is prone to failure. There are some scummy mechanics that when told to check out an issue, work on it right away without letting the customer know and then billing them way more for what you were expecting when you were only looking for an estimate.
Fair comment. However, the stock Diff on the S2000 is a highly documented weakness on these cars. I’ve seen so many trackside diff swaps due to them grenading.
Well, until I heard 500whp, I was calling BS on most of that list. However, with that much power, I would very much be concerned about that rear diff and possibly even the trans. (Not sure how much power an S2K trans is rated at) The alumiunm flywheel would be best served in an NA application. They're good for fast throttle response, but not good for high torque applications. Especially a boosted build. I would swap back to a steel lightweight flywheel. The other reinforcements are a good idea. Not sure about the spindles, unless we're talking about the rear. High output can sheer the center spline on rear wheel hubs. Maybe that was the concern? I'm not sure. The little stuff I would have just done myself, which it sounds like you opted to do. I'm not sure what's even being talked about with not being able to do an alignment. I guess its possible, I've just never seen it before. Stuff like the braided brake lines I would count as nice to haves. The bushings and tierods I would have inspected. Cracked is not the same as torn. There's no way I would have bought a full fire supression system this early in the game. Especially if its not required. I laughed when I heard intake brace. Ok, its a stock part, but required is an overstatement. Skunk2 doesn't even have bracing mount points for their intakes. Its only really needed if you want to yank the engine out by the intake. $70k for a race car is insane for where you're at financially. $20k is about all I would put into that car for now. No need to pull a dount media, lol. $60k into a $4k car. They're insane. Trusting a shop for your build is like trusting the bank with your budget. They'll take you to the cleaners if you let them. Nice car, clean build. Hope it stays in one piece. Cheers.
