5:29-5:42 I had this same issue putting together my LS engine less than 4 days ago, using an inexpensive ratcheting ring compactor. 2 things in conjunction that I found worked were: 1) ensuring the piston was centered both vertically and horizontally in the compressor as I tightened it, while ensuring at least 10mm of piston skirt stuck out the bottom so that when placed on top of the cylinder, I could use the skirt to help guide the piston into the bore and center the compressor above it. 2) when inserting the piston, I had to give it a truly solid thwack so that it would fly out of the compressor and deep down into the cylinder in one go. Applying oil on the outside diameter of the piston and rings, and the inner bore of both the cylinder and the compressor helped out a lot in this endeavor (and no, I would never install pistons into cylinder bores that weren't pre-oiled first).

Trowing this out there, I'm pretty sure you should have put the oil pan on last. You never know if you might drop something in there while working on it, and the front cover is designed to be installed before the oil pan. The way that the oil pan seals would work better against the bottom of the front cover, by doing the front cover first.

What most people don't know about compression ratio is that it works on piston while going down also (intake) The piston being closer to the top of the cylinder creates a greater vacuum force while on the intake stroke. This is why big cams work better with high compression ratio - they need the momentum of fast moving air to wake up the cams.

Something I haven't heard you mention, the reason that engine is so used over other k series engines that are similar is the ECU for it was the original base for k tuner and those are cheap compared to the other variants with similar internals. Similar goes for the k24s from that year range being as used that only require two connectors swapped compared to back grading the ECU and harness like later engines in that series require for kpro. Other you did a good job explaining the basics for new car enthusiast.

I think the biggest reason people use the K20 over the K24 is because a stock ECU will run the K20 without complications. The K24A2 has drive by wire, so its ECU can't easily be used for swaps. That means a modified or standalone ECU and tune is required to do the swap right. But since the K24A2 can be found for around $500 vs $2K+ for a performance K20, a K24A2 swap still ends up being about the same price or cheaper and has much more torque.

the trick to the ring compressor is you want to seat it inside the block a little. If you get the cheapo ratcheting ones this works great cuz you can push them in axially and they sorta "spiral" out, giving you a nice edge to stick into the bore. the edge being in there helps transition the rings. DO NOT hammer on them or force them if they're snagging, you can bend or snap the rings.

Dual VTEC....when low RPM you can set it for 280 degre cam. In high rpm you give itu 330 degree cam profile. So it become an afterburner piston engine since it install turbocharger. Just make sure your valve and piston are not melting.

I'm not even a Honda boi but if my 86 goes I'm totally planning for the K swap cause I love the balance of a boxster motor but 500+hp in an 86 chassis would be INSANE

Hello Donut team. I love your channel and content. My suggestion would be to put the K20A motor into a Subaru BRZ, the one with the older body style! The car has amazing suspension that’s overdamped and handles great. It’s also compact and the engine bay would be proportionate to the K20A engine. What the lacks is power. And the boosted K20A would be the powertrain it needs and will turn the car into an absolute rocket 🚀. I’d also put 225 tires on the BRZ with some nice aftermarket wilwood racing brakes. Add couple of aero mods. For tuning the boost, I wouldn’t start at 1000bhp, perhaps 500 bhp is more than adequate to test out the vehicle on a track. Thank you for producing such great content for us car enthusiasts! Looking forward to the build!

Back in the early 80's Renault F1 engines were factory tested and adjusted after assembly. They were 1.5 liter turbo engines. The test and adjust run on the Dyno was limited to 15" max and the minimum acceptable power was...1500 HP. After 15" the engine was either "good" or ... scrapped... My point is, it's relatively easy to get very high hp from an engine. The only valuable aspect is how long it will last.

My first car i ever bought was a 92 Integra 3 door with the B18 without VTEC. It wasn't the fastest thing but i had it set up like a go cart and it was probably the most fun I've had in a car.

I used to have a EJ6 fully built D16 SOHC turbo that I built with friends and man that thing was fun to drive, the dream was always to upgrade to a K swap motor, but this was like a decade and a half ago so it was kind of expensive then. To see the prices now, it makes me want to build another one again. I think I would easily go all-motor though in a lighter chassis, the all motor NA just slaps and feels so much more raw and visceral IMO.

Definitely! Honda's powertrain belongs in a Honda chassis! I know the body wasn't the best built, they would rust eventually, but that 3 door coupe series was the pin-up 😍
