If you want a more recentish one, some karens got GTA5 banned from Target stores here in Australia Or you could even do a video on Michael Atkinson, a Karen (or whatever the male equivalent is) in politics who was one of the main reasons why for so many years Australia never had an R rating for games since he was consistently against it.

I do have a tale it involves me a ignorant Karen mom and the game silent Hill 2 I was at my local EB Games picking up silent Hill 2 also looking to see if there was any other PlayStation 2 games I wanted to pick up while I was there I saw a small boy 6 to 8 (not to sure how old) and the Karen grabbing silent Hill 2 I turned her and said the there's an m rating on the box does not mean mother approved it means mature the Karen gave me a dirty look don't tell me what I can and cannot buy for my son walked over bought the game and left I bought my copy thought nothing of it fast forward about three days later I get a phone call they got the walkthrough for silent Hill 2 I was waiting for the walkthrough picking up any walkthrough at the time I go to get it and there I see the Karen with her son her son looked like He had not slept in those heard the cry of the Karen give me my money back looks like she went to pick up another game as I walk up to the till with my walkthrough turn to our son and say scary game isn't it her son nods in agreement and then I feel the laser beams at the back of my head as the Karen give me one of the most aggressive looks I've ever got 😂

Yeah, people who claim that everybody is so much more sensitive today than they used to be have obviously forgotten all moral panics about blood, sex, violence and so on in music, games and movies that plagued the 80’s and 90’s. People have obviously always been offended, social media has just made it easier to rally up other Karen’s.

My mom was pretty strict about what games I was allowed to play as a kid... But she did what a normal, level-headed person would do... read the ESRB label and ask the clerks how intensely some of the things like violence and alcohol use applied in the game. If it wasn't excessive, or it was comedic rather than serious, she didn't care. I played a lot of games before I "should have" because she was just doing her job as a parent and vetting the games. And it wasn't like she kept all violence or toilet humor from me, either; she understood that I was a kid and I'd see it elsewhere anyway. Fuck Karens, man.

Your mom did a better job than mine. My mom was okay for the most part but the fear mongering these karens and politicians did on TV meant I didn't get to play games like Mortal Kombat, even though tje violence was cartoony and fake. Like, ripping a person's spine out intact? Unlikely. Freezing them and the punching them in two? And the bone explosions lol. Apparently we are just bags of blood and a few femurs... 😂

I let my cousins play GTA "before they should have" when we were little, though it was under close supervision and I only allowed them to drive around. This was back in the PS2 era, so even if they did run over people, it wasn't as graphic as it is now.

I remember when I was a kid, a friend and I would play Goldeneye 007; my mom didn't know about the ratings system at the time, so she was surprised my friend and I were shooting the crap out of each other. She was about to tell us we can't play it any more (in fairness, it was dad's game, from what I recall, alongside South Park 64), when I told her there's an option in the game where you're reduced to just slapping each-other. She thought that was more appropriate and even hilarious. She wasn't wrong. XD

@@scottthewaterwarrior Oh man. I have another story about something similar. My dad rented a game for the Xbox, from our local Family Video back when they were still open, by the name of Brute Force. Iirc, I was maybe 11 or 12 at the time? The game was rated M. We had ZERO idea until we got to a particular mission to kill a cultist leader and your commanding officer tells you to "Kill that bastard." Deadass it was a record-scratch moment as dad paused the game like "Whoa...what did he say?" I wanted to keep playing despite not knowing what that word meant 'cause...ya know...was having fun with shooty-shooty-bang-bang third-person shooter game. Dad said I could, but only if I promised to not say that word and never speak of this again. Pretty funny thinking back on that; my mom may not be a gamer, but my dad is. How he didn't know about ratings until after that I will never know, but darn it if it wasn't hilarious with hindsight. XD

It always amazes me. When I worked in GAME so many parents came in to buy 18 rated games for their kids, then came in later angry they'd been given a game too old for them. Got to a point I had to ask them and make sure they knew first. Didn't stop it happening though.

Especially since _they're_ the ones who made the ESRB a thing in the first place! Karens: These games are violent! There should be a warning! Game Makers: Okay. Here's your warning. Karens: No no, what I actually ment is that you need to stop making games altogether. I mean really, the games have a content warning on them. Complaining about the content is like buying an R or X rated movie, giving it to your 8 year old to watch and then getting bent out of shape at the people who made it for having tits and sex or blood and violence in the movie.

Unrated stuff makes it confusing, because some UR stuff is GREAT for kids and others aren't so much. Just another case in this age to do a cursory Google and make an informed choice.

@@ElvenRaptor Imagine being this kid, and realising that your mom: took away your game and sense of achievement; robbed other kids from playing two games - in store pulls of the first, and in the cancelled development of the sequel; could have threatened game developer's jobs; and could have brought into reality the political movement to lessen or outright ban violent games in North America...all because she saw you pulling off a move where a claymation ape took a piss. Kinda puts things into perspective as to how ridiculously overkill some people can be in their indignation.

Mary Tudor totally burned people alive because she played Pyro in Team Fortress 2 and not because they didn't share the same religion as her. People have been violent long before video games ever existed, the video game violence argument as been debunked many times and yet people still use it as a scapegoat instead of letting people take responsibility for their own actions

It really does appear that Karens Just never know how to take self-responsibility. I mean seriously she didn't even pay attention to the ESRB rating. It was her own fault for buying the game in the first place. And quite frankly most of the time when you see a Karen nowadays it's usually something that's actually her own fault. @@Goleon I had a friend like that growing up, one time his mom even asked the clerk why a game was rated M and he explained all the violence, blood, sex, etc., and she still bought the game anyway! Divorced parents syndrome, dad wouldn't let him watch Pokemon cause it was "too violent," mom let him do anything! Even then though the dad was inconsistent, no violent games, but here's an airsoft gun, now go shoot your brother with it!

We have a Karen to thank for the success of Married With Children. One Karen complained in the middle of nowhere midwest and it brought attention to the show, making it a giant hit. It's too bad this Primal Rage instance happened too early in the video game lifecycle for the same effect to happen.

I really love the digs the show did on her. A good example: the Peas in a Pod episode. The fake show is a wild success, but is cancelled. When they ask Marcy why, she says "Some lady in Michigan didn't like it." 😆

Good grief. I was still a teenager, barely, when Primal Rage came out. Just about all my free time was spent gaming when I was a kid. If I owned a suspect game like Primal Rage or Mortal Kombat (I deffo did, and then some) I didn't share this kind of thing with my mother. Like, ever. Then again, if she did happen to figure out I was playing a game with a lot of violence in it, she trusted my judgment and didn't expect me to go on a rampage because of it.

I knew Primal Rage II was a thing that was cancelled, but I never expected Karens to play a part in it not being released. I hate them now more than I already did.

Personally, I don't fully buy the idea that they cancelled it due to a few Karens complaining. Have you seen that advertising in the late 90s and early 00s was like in the US? Especially the videogames? It was all about being "edgy" and controversial. They would have MARKETED the fact that "Your parents don't want you to play this game!" and that "they want to ban ii, so get it while you can!". You don't spend that much time and money on a game and cancel it because of a few people complaining, there were several major games released this year that had a ton of controversy that would make this look like a joke in comparison yet they still came out and one is getting additional media being made of it. Not the first example of a game being pretty much finished or close to it and then cancelled anyway, look at Star Fox 2 and Dinosaur Planet. I think it's far more likely they felt the game just plain would not do well and would be a waste of money producing all those arcade cabinets for it. The whole gimmick of Primal Rage 2 (humans turning into dinosaurs) was based on badly-done customer feedback from the first game after all.

I already posted about this above but it was cancelled for 2 big reasons: 1) Midway bought the company and didn't want to make stuff with the competing IP which was stupid because dino stuff was a HUGE with kids at the time and 2) because arcade machines available couldn't run it properly. The designers reached for the stars when they should have just tried for orbit

If you want a better explanation: the original meaning of the phrase doesn’t apply for the obvious reason that I am a transportation provider with literally nothing to upsell. Dealing with money has nothing to do with me. As for the other, much more common interpretation, the rules and regulations of the transit system say that as conductor, I have “Charge of train”, which means I have a certain level of discretionary authority when it comes to said train. If I feel circumstances have arisen where it would be unsafe for the train to move, I can hold the train as long as necessary in a station if we are stopped, or ether apply the emergency breaks or order the Train operator to bring the train to a halt if we are moving. Conversaly, if you are yelling down the stairs to hold the train, I don’t have to if I don’t feel like it.

This reminds me of back in 2004, I was 8 years old. My mum bought me a copy of GTA San Andreas. She had no idea what the game was about. I started playing it straight after school. Then my dad walked into the room and saw me playing. The timing was great because he only saw me playing the pool table minigame (snooker). He told me he'll come play with me after he gets dressed. 10 minutes later, he comes back into my room and sees be bashing a guy with a pool cue to death. His face was priceless. He was a cool dad though. He didnt join me but he didnt complain neither.

A lot of customers when they ask "can't you just fix it yourself?" don't realise that even if you *could* fix it yourself, you're not permitted to do so, and could really screw up the licensing agreement and machine warranty/insurance if you try.

Although, to be fair game ratings should only be a guide. They are not a shortcut for parenting or knowing what is in the media your kids are engaging with. Use the ratings as a starting point, and then let your kid play what they can handle.

@@Bloodstar6078 - Well I also have various disabilities including some mental ones and I got a high level like of anxiety for maybe my whole life so it makes sense that my parents (especially my mom who was a bit overprotective when I was growing up) would be kind of weary of what I watch and play so they would really pay attention to the ratings. Also once I became a teenager they did ease up a bit more on this stuff as I got into Ranma 1/2 when I was in sixth grade (12/13) and that series has brief nudity in it while I became a fan of Family Guy upon entering high school and also got into Lupin The Third around that same time. As long as it wasn’t porn or something close to that my folks were ok on it after I turned 13.

In my case, I did get and play a rated T game when I was about 8. To be fair it was Super Smash Bros Melee and my parents felt I was old enough for that one. I noted the rating and pointed it out to my parents, and they pointed out it was like that for cartoon violence, which was perfectly fine by them. Either way, I didn't play it much until I was a little older, because that same year I got Micky Mouse's Magical Mirror (I think that's what it was called?) and was more interested in that.

Not pointless. If Time-Warner acted sooner they could have sued her to stfu since she didn't even try to contact them (allegedly) and give them a chance to respond, but also, as they pointed out she clearly ignored the warning label. But the ESRB also serves a purpose for both industry and government. Industry doesn't have to worry about censorship, and the government doesn't have to worry about violating first amendment rights. And parents have a tool if they want.

@@Mark-nh2hsit's probably because the rotoscoped animations, while beautiful, are not as conducive to gameplay as traditional animation techniques. For most fighting games the animation team and game designers are working together to ensure that all moves are readable, that they have the right timing and that they look and feel impactful. Often the results you get from just swapping between 2 or 3 frames to represent a move are going to be more desirable than if every move was given an equal amount of frames per second of on-screen character movements. With rotoscoping you're more beholden to the material in the reference footage because when you deviate from it, remove some unnecessary transitional frames, or try and alter the speed of the animation for a move you run the risk of destroying the illusion because instead of beautiful, life-like motion you have a strange mixture of different styles within the same game and it will become harder to predict what the timings are to act and react in the moment.

Seriously, if you don't want your kids playing Teen or Mature rated games, then don't buy them for your kid in the first place! It isn't the store's job to parent your kids for you! Seriously, parents need to take responsibility for situations that they cause by not being observant & making sure the game they are purchasing is something that is suitable for their kid! To be honest, the content itself is benign as the attack itself is more toilet humor & light gore (due to the acid reducing the opponent to a skeleton) than anything super violent or sexual (yes the name Golden Shower can be seen as a reference to the sexual act, but I doubt her son would have realized that & again she's lucky she didn't pick up a M Rated title due to not paying attention to the Rating! I mean, the rating system exists so parents can tell if a game is suitable for their kid! It's like a parent ignoring the PG-13 (and I'm talking about an old-school PG-13 film where the rating actually meant something, like the nude painting scene from Titanic or the sex scene in the car) rating & being mad that there some nudity!

God, I was just remembered this crap earlier today, what a bizarre one. As far as I know, Best Buy actually did restock the game after a bit, but refused to do so with the Genesis version unless it was re-rerated to M....which makes no sense since every other version besides the Nintendo ports have that same finishing move (even the game gear version). I'm also of the opinion that Midway canned the second game moreso due to how they already had MK and Killer Instinct in arcades so another fighting game in this vein would be more redundant...though according to the former dev team they really did so to shave off the competition. Either way, a shame.

Greetings from Germany. Here we don't need Karens to get stupid bans like this and there are still some politicians that argue like this Karen. Although it got better in the last 10 years German age restrictions are often still 2-3 years above the European age restrictions and there are still games rated PEGI16 that are rated USK18 or unrated in Germany. Unrated is similar to r-rating in America and means these games cannot be advertised and cannot be sold in public. For this reason, some games that are available on Steam in other European countries are not sold on Steam in Germany. Even the Steam pages of these games are not available from a German IP.

I still remember going to GameStop with a friend of mine, he tried to buy an M-rated game with his mom, she asked the why it was rated M and the clerk explained all the reasons (everything), then his mom bought the game anyway. Didn't complain about it later thankfully, but why even ask if you don't care?

@@Larry No, I think it was just a case of divorced parents: dad was super strict, so mom was too nice. Even then though his dad was weirdly inconsistent, video game violence bad, but airsoft guns OK!

Do parents ever take into account the ESRB rating? I bet Hillary Clinton never played computer games. Its the reason the ESRB exists. Much like when the record industry introduced "Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics" labels for albums with inappropriate language content in 1987 (USA).
