As an Isshin Ryu practitioner, the feet are the foundation at all times. The name of the Kata is Seisan, meaning the use the ‘forward balance stance, which is critical. The foot that is being moved, requires a ‘half-moon’ or ‘half-circle’ step, in order to maintain ‘Center of Gravity’ and balance. Personally I pay attention to proper foot movement first, and second eye focused on the the target. Distinction can be lost by hiding it with blurred speed. TECHNIQUE, TECHNIQUE, TECHNIQUE. We must master energy-spent. After all, Katas represent multiple assailants. If you miss one opponent, that could lead to disaster in the end.

I'm a former Teakwondo 2nd degree black belt that does kickboxing now. I love watching these karate videos because it reminds me of how Teakwondo use to be before it became so soft. It's one of the main reasons I left and started kickboxing. I still practice my forms, stretches, drills and body conditioning. As it helps my flow and power in kickboxing. It has definitely helped give me an edge. I feel if Teakwondo would patch up its weaknesses and focus less on Olympic style sparring and more on combat. It could reimerge with some dignity but I doubt that would happen. Because less people these days wanna train hard.

One thing to check during the judgment of kata (Italy) is the correlation between the upper part of the body vs the lower part. Only in this way you can have a complete-body contraction. It is something to work on during training. When you firstly study a kata you have to know the technique sequence and then you have to comprehend the kata and only after " giving it the right time" it is ready for competition training. This is the best way to perform a kata in my opinion. Often times I see the masters skip the first two steps and go for the competition mode. After time and practice, though, the athlete comes to the same level but it takes longer I guess.

Gojushiho was my Tournament Kata back in the day. I would tell people to make sure they SIT into and lock them in, those slow techniques with a short pop or snap to show completion then a snap of the head to show change of encounter/direction. Then a little too fast in other areas I saw too around minutes 10.15, and perhaps show better breathing technique as well. I agree with perhaps better leg strength it would have been an even better Kata.. though she did a good job over all!

"I think I've done more bad kata than most of you have done good kata" not that hard when i've never done a good kata :( #Joke I think it's awesome to have this kind of feedback for kata practitioners :) this small details are really hard to notice when you're practicing by yourself... I remember long time ago practicing my "Heian Godan" -Shito Ryu- (which I believed was really good and had almost nothing to correct, how silly of me), I used to extend a little bit my front arm when transitioning from Uchi Uke to Gyaku Tsuki in order to give a sense of more power and I didn't noticed it, but a senpai who was watching me did and told me to not do it because I wasn't trying to hit someone with my elbow... and that blown my mind. Keep the good and awesome work man :)

I know it's karate tradition to block with a closed fist, but in Kung Fu it's many ties open fist blockings. The reason is a closed fist activate the biceps muscles and those muscles naturally working into your body, an open hand block activate the triceps muscles naturally working out from body much more powerful block with an open hand. But kata is kata and there should be losed fist blocking.

Excellent feedback. If you allow me to give my two cents in your video, the biggest difference between the first kata and the other two is lost focal point. In 3:08 the practitioner turns his head slightly down. In 3:12 the head turns with the tsuki. In 3:22 the head tilted to his right, 4:33, 4:35 and so on... If I'm crossing a line by adding to your critique, (probably you don't want everyone critiquing) let me know and I will remove my comment. Thanks for sharing your feedback. This is a great series Jesse. I don't even do Karate. Not since I was a very young boy anyway and I didn't stick with it unfortunately. However I've watched three of these back to back because I've enjoyed watching the Kata themselves admittedly and found your insights interesting. We're very lucky in Kendo. We only have ten Kata and they're physically quite simple compared to karate Kata. I also practice Iaido and that's actually pretty hard to nail even though there are way fewer techniques and movements but because Iaido is solely forms the attention to detail is the challenge. Plus it's real swords which are heavier so it has its own physical challenges in that regard. A lot of what you talk about though translates even into my arts. Particularly core stability and centre of gravity.

Do you consider it possible to critique a Kata that you don't know/understand (as in the Bunkai/application) ? example. I was called in to judge at a local tournament Kata with mixture of Karate/Kung Fu/Tae Kwan Do competitors where i was unfamiliar with the forms) . OR would you suggest that "Kata Judging" is an evaluation of a performance that doesn't require the understanding of the application and more of a evaluation of "how it looks"

Ok, I seriously need to ask this regarding kobudo, and what I've seen in tournaments. What is the point of having a tapered Bo if the tips taper to maybe 1" at the end and only are at an actual combat width at the center? All I can see it beign used for is because the practitioner hasn't been able to master the actual weight of a Bo, but instead use it to make the spins and transitions faster since it is lighter, but to the point that it would break. Likewise - why do I constantly see a "bo" (and I have to use the term lightly here) being used by both adults and children alike no thicker than that of a wooden dowel you can buy at Walmart that just has reflective tape on it???

Isn't kata a way to train? It doesn't have to directly translate to real fighting. Only sparring can be direct because making movements without an opponent is totally unnatural as far as fighting. Wouldn't it be better if you could generate extremely powerful strikes using minimal amount of body movement. The more body you use, the more tired you will get and the more you show your opponent what you intend. Maybe you are talking about your karate style.
