Glad to get another edition of this series out! I got some plans to make some "grander" episodes that will focus on broader subjects and have longer length times! Be on the lookout for them in the coming weeks!

A interesting side note is that 700 to 703 are SD40X's, not SD50's. They were EMD's test bed for what latter became the SD50. KCS worked with EMD to develop them and latter bough the 4 units from EMD. They were built on SD40-2 frames that were slightly shorter then a production SD50 frame. The easy way to spot one was the 5 small panels along the roofline over the prime mover. Where a SD50 was all one panel. The KCS latter worked hand in hand with EMD on solving the major problems with the SD50's and this aded in the development of the SD60. Great video!

Great history. I’ve actually had the pleasure of running some of these when I first started as an engineer. Thanks for sharing. Many fond memories for sure.

I remember when KCS bought the Midsouth and took over in January, 1994. They did not run 6-axle power on any part of the Midsouth until some track work was done. They purchased several ex-UP GP40-2s and the Canadian cabbed GP40-2s from CN to help quickly get rid of all of Midsouth's power. When I did see a 6-axle for the first time, it was SD50s and one SD40X in a lash up pulling train #7...what later became the I-DAAT.

KCS (now LTEX) 7005 is still on LTEX’s active leasing roster. In recent history, the Buffalo & Pittsburgh railroad and the Ohio Central railroad (G&WI subsidiaries) had the unit in use on their property. It was just recently returned to LTEX in Lordstown Ohio in late January this year.

Very nice video here! I always love to hear about KCS and their history. KCS was one of my favorite railroads prior to them becoming just another division of the Canadian Pacific Railway System
