Although it had a troubled production and has been disowned by Mann and pretty much every actor who was in it, I still consider The Keep as one of the top 3 finest films i've ever seen. The atmosphere, acting (particularly Prochnow), music, cinematography, characterization, story and even sfx make this film a unique gem.
@@DevotedDisciple-x Like Mann, they don't want their names to be associated with the unpopular disaster it turned out to be. Understandable, but unwarranted. Maybe one day they will all see that.
I dont have a way with words so bare with me,but the atmosphere that Mann manages to create in this film is cinematic perfection. Its a shame it was a troubled production/film,because the actors in it and of course Michael Mann with that story to tell, that film could be so much more...
My favorite film of all time. Even if they released the existing cut of the movie on BluRay with extras it would be a massive winner for Paramount. Their ridiculous refusal to do so is just shooting themselves in the foot, as the fan base would shell out an absolute fortune to buy it.
Exactly! This is a combination of Mr Mann's imagination and ethereal scenes combined with his vision of atmospheric design and imagery. And the early 1980s style and visuals complete this masterpiece.
I saw the movie when it was first released. The atmospheric opening is fantastic, and I remember it to this day. The rest of the movie, well, it can work if you're good at suspending disbelief and overlooking problems. I had trouble doing that, but a fewof my friends really liked it. Still love the opening, though.
Underrated indeed... But this aint justfy bad editing, bad acting and studio cuttings. Even gandalf guy sucks. Still a good movie which has an aura within.
As much as I was disappointed in this film, I will give the production value an A+. The keep itself and the area surrounding it is exactly how I pictured it when I read the book.

The best, fantastic clarity, fantastic music,👍🇮🇪 love the detail of the German half tracks and uniforms, a very visual treat🌄Teutonic knights in the dark ages

My personal favorite TD soundtrack. Especially the "real" music that was "actually" used in the film. Although much that was used was previously released, it fit the film perfectly. The official The Keep ST release has very little content used for the film. :(
I'm finally reading F. Paul Wilson's underrated book, and watching Jurgen Prochnow in anything is always great, The English Patient, Das Bot, Remember with Christopher Plummer, etc. "Does that enthrall you, Alstedt?"
such a wonderful opening undone by the jarring ADR line shoehorned in at 6:44 . I get that they needed something to inform us what the hell is going on... but it's pretty on-the-nose.
Totally! The film suffered from a lot of studio interference, but the script was uneven as well. Too slow and melodramatic in places. I first saw it on cable years ago and was blown away by the first quarter of the film, but then it became unwatchable.
@@landofthesilverpath5823 That seems to be the consensus. Once the other major characters are introduced (the commandos in black and our heroic professor), the film's plot falls apart pretty quickly.
The Keep is an amazing book. Even though I love this version it would be great to see a proper remake that wasn’t filled with production problems and followed the book faithfully.
THE ENTIRE ADVERSARY CYCLE OR NIGHTWORLD CYCLE NEEDS TO BE MADE NOW. WITH TODAYS CGI THEY'D BE EPIC. ESPECIALLY THE NIGHTWORLD BOOK ITSELF. THE HOLE IN THE PARK WITH THE BUGS, AND THEN RASALOM REEMERGING AND EVERYTHING.
I have always believed that for a movie to be good it must be quotable, and, by extension, a quotable movie cannot be bad. The Keep has a fair number of memorable lines in it, and so by my rules could likely qualify as a good movie, and certainly cannot be a bad one.
I am a big fan of this movie and a I’m cinematographer. I am wondering where this version you are showing originated from. What is your source material for this clip? I have the laser disc from Paramount that i bought on eBay for way too much money and was very disappointed to discover it was not letterboxed. I’d be interested to find out which version is letterboxed so i can look for it. I dont think the Apple TV version is 1:2.35. Please share.
I have read the novel. It would be really good as a TV miniseries. You could have a German and international cast, filming locations in Romania etc. Hope there's interest.
I'd love a remake, since Mann's original vision appears to be impossible to cobble together. But I would demand that a lot of the original elements make it into the remake. The music score, the locations, the lighting.... all of it.
From what I have read, there were many scenes planned but never came to fruition because Wally Veevers the SFX man died two weeks into post production. Apparently the original cut of the movie was 210 minutes long. I don't think we'll ever have chance to see it unfortunately.
Well, Michael Mann is a far better filmmaker than John Carpenter. The problem was the budget was $10M lower than it needed to be (Manhunter was also low budget, and even that cost twice as much at $12M), the SFX supervisor died during the production, which is evident from all the unfinished effects, and Paramount took the movie away, cutting it down to 90 mins and releasing an incoherent film with half-assed effects and sound, hence Mann disowning it and refusing to sign off on any DVD or Blu-ray. David Lynch's DUNE had a huge budget, better technicians, sound and effects, and he still had a similar experience. Lynch refuses to even talk about it. There's maybe 20% of THE KEEP that's even recognisable as a Michael Mann film, especially when compared to Manhunter, The Last of the Mohicans and Heat. If you're arguing this needed a low budget B-movie specialist with horror experience (and Carpenter in his prime was probably the best) who had no ambitions other than to faithfully make a creepy but schlocky vampire in a castle flick, then you're probably right.
@@jensr2487 Kein Problem you are welcome ich habe den Film noch nicht gesehen hoffentlich eines Tages können wir diesen MM Film als auch David Lynch's Wüstenplanet in der vo.. beiden Regisseure beabsichtigten endgültige Final Cuts erleben, wollen wir hoffen dass der FSK 18 Film auf Amazon ungeschnitten ist keine Ahnung
