The Kelpies: Two giant horse head sculptures unveiled in Scotland

Two giant statues, named the Kelpies, have been unveiled on the bank of the Forth and Clyde Canal in Scotland. The pair have become the world's largest equine sculptures, standing 30m tall and weighing 300 tonnes. The site will open to the public in 2014 after work is completed on visitor and parking facilities. Report by Sarah Johnston.

As a Canadian horse admirer, I'd go to Scotland just to see those, among other things. Also to see my namesake lands. The CBC debated the value of public art, a few weeks ago. The 2 sides inevitably are "money could be better spent" and "the money was spent well: tourism, cultural value, beauty, talking points". But then the question of what "beauty" is, surfaces. Should public art be beautiful? These Kelpies are beautiful, so there's no worries there. But what if others disagree? And on the debate goes…

And come 2014 after the referrendum on whether or not Scotland becomes wholly independent & each Scott has to shell out £1000 per year in taxes if the vote is 'Yes' I wonder how proud they'll be then about this un-necessary 'sculpture'.

They're beautiful n' all but 5million pounds just for a pair of horse heads (probably tax payers money too) that much money could've started a business for people to have jobs at or built housing.

Yours is probably the first of a string of comments all saying that the money should have gone elsewhere. This is the same cost as a block of ugly flats that there is no shortage of them. Building it will provide more jobs than a small business. It will create pride and tourist income for generations to come. Incredibly cheep at that price. There is no end of soulless boxes and houses littering the countryside. How many things like this do you see on the landscape. What sort of boring world do you want to live in.

+Kevin Sullivan You complete moron. What planet you are living on? Have you ever heard of the Roman empire and how they used to give bread and circuses to people during times of political and econimic strife to keep them dumbed down. And to think that the horses will create jobs is total bollocks. I would rather that money be given back to the taxpayer who has better ways to use it than to government who will no doubt waste it.

Tourist attraction which will bring increased revenue to local hotels, shops, and service providers in the area, thereby supporting the local economy far more than feeding some homeless people would ever do.
