The design of precast concrete requires the consideration of both permanent and temporary actions. This means it can sometimes be hard to know which will govern the design of the precast elements.
Precast concrete construction has many stages that typically govern the design of the precast element this is due to the elements being manufactured offsite and then transported to the site and to limit the amount of storage in the precast yard, so to minimise this, typically at the times of installation, the concrete is at a lower strength. After installation, the precast structure typically needs the precast element to be propped until either concrete has been poured or structural connections have been attached; this means that the precast typically has two or more load paths that need to be designed for.

Do you have experience in passive house and using precast concrete with insulation in the middle of sandwich of concrete?

Hi Brendan! Just wanted to say that I really appreciate you preparing this video on precast concrete design. The explanations are so clear and well presented. I've been enjoying your videos for a while now and am looking forward to checking out those other two videos mentioned at the end. Best wishes and much gratitude for your work, Edgardo

Dear Brendan This are wonderfully videos to learn precast. Thanks. I am civil engineering student. İs it possible to share with me a sample complete design cad drawing for 2 floor building. Thanks

Thanks a bunch for that! I started a precast shop drawing/detailing business this year and although I'm not doing the design, this gives me a better understanding on what's needed especially for prefixed connections.

Have you ever had to deal with concrete screws as a permanent connection? Appearanty they are mostly intended for temporary fixings (such as braces) but in practice I see them also beeing used for more connections to connect roof structures (with horizontal thrust forces) to hollow-core floors. I remember discussions with co-workers about this, so where fine with it others not so much (it had to do with type approvals and certification for the appplication).

Hello, hope you are doing well! I am fresh graduate as civil engineer and I like structural engineering and I have started watching your videos. It's really helped me and looking forward for more great contents. And two last things, can you give us roadmap to, make a video, how to learn different structural engineering softwares and how did you learn those softwares and how much experience do you have in it(structure engineering) ? Best wishes and gratitude for your work! Khan.

Good effort, very nice graphics. I think a few wrong info worth mentioning though. 1. Concrete Strength is typically full strength (+28 days) at erection stage, you said otherwise. 2. No, you don’t need to provide reinforcement at the joint more than what you have in the wall component for in-plane demands; those are completely different things for for different purposes and typically you don’t need as much reinforcement at the joint; e.g., for bending, you would just put the joint rebars at ends so that you have the largest moment arm and thus the capacity. 3. It made sense when you used “dowel action” term in a few places, but in most other places I think you used the term wrongly, but I understood what you were trying to say and what you were trying to say wasn’t called dowel action. Thanks for the content overall though.

Hi Ismail, 1. it depends on how earlier you erect the precast, a lot of the time you do not need full strength until much later. So depending on lead time you are not always at 28 days strength. EG in multi-storey buildings, where you need 65 or 80 MPa concrete it can be installed at a much earlier stage, limiting time in the precast yard. 2. it is not typically more it just needs to match the reinforcement EG is you require N16 for each face dowel central ~22 diameters which would be 24 diameter 3 correct it would be technically a shear interface, but there are some dowel actions. What are your thoughts on the above? Looking forward to your response. Thanks for the feedback much appreciated;.

@@BrendanHasty thanks for your reply. I agree with your explanation 1 above, it really depends as you said; typically though the precast members are erected more than 28 days after they were cast. But I agree it depends. One thing though you still need to lift and rotate to place in a storing place after stripping, or need to rotate for finishing purposes; so at that stage, the strength is for sure not ultimate, that’s worth mentioning. 2. It doesn’t need to match to the component reinforcement. E.g., component reinforcement and its spacing could be governed by temp and shrinkage requirements and there is no such requirement for joint design. Or component could be designed for out of plane gravity forces bearing on the wall eccentricity and if the joint is analyzed as pin, then it just needs to be designed for shear force since the moment is zero. 3. What I understand from dowel action when ACI uses it is that the dowel action causes pure shearing of the reinforcement though there is more to it such as shear friction between concrete interfaces. Thanks.
