Precast structures have the complexity of detailing as steel structures and the design complexity of the concrete design. It really requires you to know all these complexities; this video will cover some of the structural design principles that you need to know when designing precast concrete buildings. This video covers precast columns, precast walls and precast floors. Precast structures do not know need to know about stress design but also need to consider the time behaviour of concrete and the locked-in stresses.

Great job on the precast elements. I do like you spend the time detailing the connections aspects which sometimes are overlooked. The methodology for connecting the two elements together. You also mentioned a key point on waterproofing the joints which can develop water intrusion. Stay safe Malik.

I regularly have to detail bridge decks and often the builder wants a precast solution with in-situ joints. In my experience this choice creates more complex rebar details as opposed to a full in-situ design. Mostly the splices and overlaps cause challenges as the joins can get crowded with additional stirrups.

Wow! Great stuff! Thank you! This seems like the first lecture in an engineering course entitled, "Introduction to Precast Concrete for Structural Engineers." I can imagine successive lectures that involve discussions related to chemistry, physics, and working with builders.

I have been designing and detailing precast concrete for over 42 years. All of your points are very valid and valuable considerations. I think we as an industry have learned a lot over the past 50 years regarding detailing and design of precast concrete elements. Redundancy is a primary concern as well as unintended restraint. I think you covered that well. You have a new subscriber. Thanks for the video!

precast manufacturing doesnt affected by the weather, but in actual installation, if its a windy day and cranes are off you can't do much.

Great channel! I am an architect student from Norway, and I am learning more from your channel than what we learn in school. I got a project about reusing concrete slabs and elements. Can you recommend any videos/sources for connecting elements which are not precast to fit? Especially roof/floor to wall connection. Thanks!

For precast one floor house do the same protocols apply. I'm trying to figure out how to design a very inexpensive quick to build low income house. Will be while to build, just want to learn and design some homes. Flat roof, on slab.

Hi Brendan, I am Jason from China, currently working on precast industry, typically joint solution between elements. In China, the design logic is "equal to cast in situ" shear wall vertical connection is grout sleeve while starter bars and post cast in horizontal connection, what do you think this type of connection?

It's Latin. It probably helps to avoid confusion compared to "poured in place concrete" which would tend to be ambiguous in many contexts.

Great informative video like always. I use a lot of precast slabs in residencial buildings over here, it's good for some things, what i don't like is that it sort of locks the rest of the design into place as it works only in one direction and you'll need the beams there to carry the loads. But, as always with structural engineering, it's a case by case and it can save lots of money to the client.
@BrendanHasty
@BrendanHasty Год назад
agree for floors it can be less efficent as you loose that benefits of two way actions, but typically it is still cheaper overally. precast design the the worst of concrete design and Steel design in one.
@Ooze27

@@BrendanHasty Yes, it is considerable cheaper. Especially the solution with precast beams and concrete or expanded polystyrene blocks.

@@BrendanHasty I like the speed you speak at. Too many RU-vidrs speak too slowly. You might tell your listeners they can control the speed. Particularly non-native speakers of English migh use a 0.5 or 0.75 playback speed setting. Having said all of that, your microphone isn't very good. To my ears the sound is dull, muted, and kind of opaque.

I appreciate your videos so much 🙏 but it's not just the speed alone, it's the speed plus Australian accent that makes it really hard to understand some parts. I don't have such problems understanding American or British English 😅 again, great insightful content, please keep it up!
