That's what makes him and his books so great, the thoughtful approach, the feeling he has for his characters, even in fantasy they are real and he portraits them as of flesh and blood

Tovarisch Zac Jon Snow is arguably the most dumbest character in GoT, yet he somehow became “Lord Commander” then he stepped down after making stupid moves (bringing in the wildlings). He got killed because of it, but then resurrected and became “King in The North”. He then stepped down from being a King, by bending the knee to Khaleesi. But then he realized he’s the rightful heir to the seven Kingdoms. You can never see such a thing in any other show.

@Link's AMV It might not be GRRM quality but the writing is still far from bad. They've created one of the best TV shows in history, and let's be honest anyone could die in S8 E3. The last few seasons, 7 especially, were sparce on deaths in preparation for this episode.

The best thing about ASOIAF is the lack of camp. So many fantasy stories are "plagued" by a general irreverence or pervasive feeling of "camp" throughout the story. ASOIAF is played deadly serious, and it makes its twists and turns feel more realistic and impactful, especially as its characters feel like real people instead of idealized fantasy norms. Couple that with the fact that magic, for example, is a poorly understood and often a comparatively "mythical" force in the story that the average person either doesn't believe in or has no frame of reference to comprehend, and you have a world that feels realistic despite all of its fantastical elements. Not to mention the fact that the magical elements often have dire consequences (and are not just a fully positive or destructive force, conjured at will). It's just really, really well done. I believe Martin is the best world-builder since Tolkien. The impact of his characters' deaths and the unexpectedness of them are but one small facet of what makes ASOIAF so endlessly compelling. The word "genius" is overused in the context of content creators, but the way Martin put this story together and the sheer, tremendous breadth of characters with their various interesting backstories and histories is indicative of a literary genius, IMHO. In many novels, I found myself irritated when too many characters are present. In ASOIAF, I can't wait to learn all about the next one.

Winter is the time when things die, and cold and ice and darkness fill the world, so this is not going to be the happy feel-good that people may be hoping for. Some of the characters [are] in very dark places. .... Things get worse before they get better, so things are getting worse for a lot of people."

It's what makes his books realistic. Think of individuals we knew, the death of Princess Diana, Robin Williams, JFK? Think of tragedies that are unexpected yet horrifying, Pearl Harbor, 9/11? This is how death works in the real world, Martin is the best at channeling it.
@TheMidnightPhil
@TheMidnightPhil Год назад
I'm only vaguely aware with the franchise-I've caught bits and pieces of the show, heard the big spoilers, and haven't read the books-but I do agree with his principle. If it feels like the "main characters" are 100% safe simply by virtue of being the main characters, then the action doesn't feel especially dangerous or engaging. Like, OF COURSE they're going to be okay. By making sure no one is safe, you ensure that the reader is engaged and worried for the characters. All your action carries new weight. I read somewhere once that he also commented about having skepticism on bringing characters back from the dead, and I think he's got a point. The whole thing about death is how frightening permanent it is, and how no one sends messages back afterward to let everyone know that they're fine and happy in some sort of after life or whatever. So bringing someone back-especially if the option to do so has no prior precedent in your setting-really cheapens that sense of threat. As an author, I imagine you'd never want your audience's reaction to a character death to be, "Eh, they're probably either fine or will be brought back." You get that in comic books all the time.

Unexpected deaths are a way to root the story or narrative in reality, I believe. It's lazy writing to rely on the premise that the hero always makes it out alive ; No matter the circumstances. But it's also what most are accustomed to. At large, people don't like to see a story where the hero ultimately dies in a non-martyr fashion.

Yeah, true. I don’t think you exactly see it coming, but it is weird, because he basically tells you that something terrible is probably coming, but still lulls you into a false sense of security that it won’t actually happen. It somehow makes you think that all the warning signs are just building the tension, but it won’t actually happen - and then it does.

Others have and others have accomplished it. He will fail. Also, I do actual work for a living. I don't sit in a cushy chair and tell stories of dragons. However, if I did I wouldn't take days off.@@erosennin211

The Red Wedding made sense, it was very hearth breaking because we loved the characters and they died. But it made sense, Robb broke his promise to wed one of Walder Frey's daughter. He slighted Walder marrying someone else, and then brought her into his house like some trophy. Walder Frey had greed for power and wealth, the same greed that made the Freys rich from taking tolls at The Twins. The Lanisters promised them all of The Riverlands. Roose Bolton saw that Robb was incapable of politics and diplomacy to be a King. Roose was also promised Walder Frey's daughter's weight in silver, so he married the heaviest one. All the motivations for betrayal are there. What's the point of the senseless deaths of the 1,000,000 people in King's Landing. The show's portrayal really made all those deaths just a statistic. Maybe GRRM would have had some new and old characters that we loved in that city which were also burnt alive during Daenerys and Drogon's stupefying carnage. The show rushed season 8 too much, leaving too many things feeling disconnected.

in the show most likely, any cleaver man can know Euron Greyjoy will be the ruler of the world but in the book no one know.
