As requested by our patrons, here is our version of J.R.R. Tolkien's poem, "The King Beneath the Mountains!" We worked very hard on this and hope you enjoy it:)
A note on our interpretation:
As described in the book, the legend of the Mountain King's return was one that would bring much joy and fulfillment to both Dwarvenkind and mankind in and around the Lonely Mountain.
Thus, we thought reading the prophecy seemed a fitting way to bring life to this text of legend, for would it not have been spoken far and wide for decades, until the day that it would be fulfilled?
Then, the text is sung: the tune itself is quite simple, a regular folk tune. This made sense since it would be the common man to whom this prophecy would bring the most hope.
The first half of the song, in which the whole text is sung is sort of our "Dwarven tribute" to the prophecy. The second half of the song, after the middle interlude, is as if the listener enters into Laketown, where a bard (pun intended?) may have taken up the tune, and is joined by his comrades now already celebrating the return of the Mountain king as described in the book. Since we wanted to give a nod to both the Dwarves and the men, we decided to use the same tune with two different feels. We hope you enjoy it! This was a joy to compose and bring to life!
We are unable to get permission to sell this song so we are posting it here free for your enjoyment. If you want a copy of the mp3, we are offering it to those who support us on Patreon!
My brother composed and arranged the piece. My family sang it.
Please no bad language in the comments. We want this to be family friendly:)
Lyrics:
The King beneath the mountains,
The King of carven stone,
The lord of silver fountains
Shall come into his own!
His crown shall be upholden,
His harp shall be restrung,
His halls shall echo golden
To songs of yore re-sung.
The woods shall wave on mountains
And grass beneath the sun;
His wealth shall flow in fountains
And the rivers golden run.
The streams shall run in gladness,
The lakes shall shine and burn,
All sorrow fail and sadness
At the Mountain-king's return!

My dad first read The Hobbit to me when I was very young. Every night he'd come into my room, sit on my bed next to me, and read another chapter in the warm glow of a dimmed lamp. He gave all the characters unique voices that made me laugh, and he even sang the songs, making up the tune as he went. Now, almost twenty years later, sitting in my appartment and listening to this song, I can hear his voice and feel the covers wrapped around me again. Thank you so much for making this. (P.S. My dad is still alive and well. This song just brought back some treasured memories.)

I am reading the Hobbit to my 5 year old. I showed this (and your other songs from the book) and he has not stopped singing this for the last few weeks. He also insists of singing it in his deep, dwarven voice. He and his 3 year old sister want this to be the song I sing to them at bedtime. He also enjoys running around the house in a cloak and enormous boots. Thanks for making great stuff like this and for being so much cooler than Aquanauts.

Levi Herendeen I'm a big fan of George RR Martin, and he is definitely at the top when it comes to fantasy writing, but he is not yet on the level of Tolkien. The detail that Tolkien covered is beyond anything I've ever witnessed thus far, creating entire languages and then dialects or sublanguages within, with its own grammar rules.

I keep coming back here, over and over. It's not even my favorite song, this honor shall go to "Song of Durin" for the story it tells, but this one... It speak to me on a level I cannot describe. It bear both the power of nostalgia, of the golden days of yore, and that of hope, hope of seeing those days returning, even if altered someway. A true hope, of a new light, a hope untainted, tangible, that make people smile for the future. It make me smile, for whatever future it promise, as future should. Among all of Tolkien song, filled with nostalgia, mourning and sadness for what's lost (Song of Durin, Lament for Boromir, Lament for the Rohirrim...), this one is a little light to wich i'm attracted, forever and ever.

There is an actual legend, from the ancient folk lore, known all over the national area where Slovenian language is spoken (or once has been), and perhaps even (or obviously?*) beyond, it is the legend of King Matjaž (or Mat(t)hias, Matheus, Matthew etc.), sleeping for ages beneath the (certain) mountain (in Slovenia, of course :-) ), and waiting for his beard to encircle his massive stone table nine times before he wakes up again. * Why obvious? It is known very well, at least to some of us, that J.R.R. Tolkien had geniously included surprisingly many elements from ancient and even more contemporary European lore and history, be it of linguistic, of geographical or simply of old folk tales nature, into his monumental work. As if he were rewriting some very ancient and long gone history, peoples and events, of realm disappeared ...

I only discovered this channel a few weeks ago and I must say I do regret not getting to know you sooner! With every song I listen to I admire you a bit more. It's fascinating and absolutely awesome and the harmony of your voices just gives me the chills EVERY time I listen to any of your pieces. I grew up with the Lord of the Rings and I always loved the poems. You bring them to life and I can spend hours just listening on repeat. Thank you! PS: After reading some comments asking for it I'm joining the crowd: Please show yourself :) I want to get to know the faces behind these awesome voices :)

The instrumental bridge of this adaptation is so good it's mind blowing. The gentle yet powerful effects of the choir combined with the orchestral crescendo and percussion always amazes me. Clamavi De Profundis, this song is beautiful.

I believe there were. True heroes of epic fantasy style that were incredible. But history is written by the victors. They have been lost to time. The victors in our world are usually cruel and didn’t care the history or the people they took over. I believe there were great people in our history, and we will never know them

Agnarr Salventius Don't tell Tolkien's Dwarves about that. Especially Gimli. Actually, anyone else notice that the enmity between Tolkien's Elves and Dwarves is really subdued compared to more modern portrayals? I mean, yeah they naturally distrust each other due to a past conflict, but they still gladly trade with each other and work together? For example: -Elrond cared for Thorin and Company like he would any guest, and later invited the Dwarfs to the Council of Elrond, where he treated them as befitting honored ambassadors. -The Hobbit's ending says that in the north, after the Battle of the Five Armies, there was friendship between Elves, Dwarves, and Men. -The Fellowship enters Moria by a secret entrance made specially for trade with the Elves. -And then of course we have Legolas and Gimli, who become such bros that they go exploring caves and forests together and try to appreciate each other's values. Plus, in the epilogue, Legolas and Gimli sail into the West together, because bros stick together. (This also makes Gimli the first Dwarf to ever journey to Valinor.) I always thought that was interesting.
