from what I recall, he was never stated to be that smart, he always appeared very snarky and snobby, calling people idiots and having a keen intellect in that regard.. but that was because.. well.. look at the team (the Vizards), not to many of them having straight up the smarts as their trait.. several of them are just "shoot first ask questions later" type of fighters. Love just turns up and brute strengtsh through it. Mashiro turns up and fight's agility wise headon. Kensei just punches it harder til either him or it breaks + some battle experience he relies on but the hit hard is basically his motto. Hiyori just charges in and dukes it out in similar fashion to Mashiro, just less agility and more straight forward. Lisa is a well versed fighter, pretty all around, has some smarts due to not excelling in any perticular style. Hachigen is the first person that can be called uniquely smart, since he doesn't fight by sword, but by spells and staying in the back support/assist. That leaves our favourite "Shinji", the dude that is just a bit calmer and thinks about it, rather than rushing in like half his group does... He, Lisa and Hachigen is basically the ones not in the "rush in" style.. Hachigen however is fast to support the "right at their throat" friends and Lisa follows soon after. The reason Shinji seems so smart, is just because he understand that he needs to try and stay calm and collected in the matter.. he has never come close to the type of IQ Urahara, Aizen amd Mayuri is flaunting on a near daily basis.
