Queen Elizabeth's side of family was not the first to be in line to the throne. Her father became king only because his brother advocated the throne to marry an American divorce. Queen Elizabeth's father was the Prince Harry of his time.
He kissed her cheek and her hand because he is a distant cousin of both Her Majesty and Prince Philip through both his father and his mother (he shares Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and King Christian IX of Denmark as common ancestors with both of them). Also, as a fellow Sovereign, he does not bow to another Sovereign.
+Javier20 .Javier20 Not true, having a common relative who lived 100/200 years ago has nothing to do with it lol. I don't even think these royals consider themselves family to each other. It's more that most Royal families in Europe have good relations with each other. Them kissing each other on the cheek has nothing to do with them seen each other as family. Especially on the Spanish side they do that regulary and it's considered a normal thing to do when greeting people.
The Queen is such an impeccably reserved personality, this gesture embarrassed her at first. Then she remembered they're all cousins basically, so she smiled😀
Queen Victoria was a great.........grandmother to both Queen Elizabeth and King Felipe. Felipe's great-grandmother, Victoria Eugenia, was a granddaughter of Victoria. So yes, they are cousins. There is also a relationship with Prince Philip as Felipe's mother Sofia was a Greek princess.
@@williamelgin6873 yes, something that the divorcee he married seems to forget. She is a commoner that didn't even give him an heir to the throne. She has a son from her first marriage, but couldn't give a King one.
@@williamelgin6873 Prince Philip was also a descendant of Queen Victoria. He and the Queen were 3rd cousins, iirc. Victoria made it her mission in life to marry her kids and grandkids into every royal house imaginable, and she pretty much succeeded.
@@roystonphillips2235 missed? Why? Cause she did good things in life? Like not building concentration Camps in Africa? Or not Supporting the beating of Black ppl there? Hmmm
To understand the kiss, one must know three things: First, it is custom in Spain and Hispanic America to greet with a kiss (especially among family). Secondly, His Majesty is a third cousin once removed of Her Majesty (His Majesty being a great-great great grandson of Queen Victoria). Thirdly, they are also personally close.
AND the British Royals and all European Royals greet one another like this when they are relaives. if you noticed, Prince Philip bowed to the King of Spain, as is right a proper as the King of Spain outranks him.
You missed out 1 incomplete point. The kiss, is majority European from the start in the old days. Only today some countries in Europe stop practising it. But Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Balkans, some Eastern European countries still practise this generally in their culture. And if you are discussing outside Europe; then you have Arabs and North Africans that does this way longer before Hispanic America.
In Spain we greet women with two kisses. In Hispanoamerica only one. Men are very similar (father-son, brother-brother) we also give two kisses. Our King Felipe IV is a great-great grandson of Queen Victoria. Victoria-Beatriz-Victoria Eugenia-Juan-Juan Carlos I -Felipe VI • Enviar comentarios Traductor de Google
It's nice to see monarchs greet each other affectionately. Especially knowing they're related and are close for a long time. It shows a more pleasant side about the relationships between the different nations.
Some people in these comments seem surprised that he kissed her. But the coverage of one of her other jubilees showed her greeting other royals before a dinner she hosted. All her related royals greeted her like this: Margarethe of Denmark, Harald of Norway, Wilhelmina of The Netherlands, etc.
Hey You, it's not a "royal thing". People in my state (Kentucky) have been doing this with their cousins for at least a century. Although a tad different than what we saw in this video, it's a more amped up version.
King Felipe is related to her Majesty the Queen like most of the royal families in Europe. So nice to see him kissing the Queen on the cheek. Such a dear gesture. And her Majesty beamed and smiled. Also nice to see: Prince Philip and Letizia from Spain riding together in the next carriage after the Queen of England and the king of Spain. At least the most European royals know their duties and how to represent their country and folk to the rest of the world whereas politicians sometimes seem to be forgetting that.
The Queen seems genuinely happy to see a member of her extended family....and to be kissed by the handsome younger man. Looks like she had no objection whatsoever.
I know queen Elizabeth is no longer with us but it was still a pleasure to see this greeting. King felipe called the queen auntie lilibet with respect and affection because they are related thru queen Victoria. Felipe is truly charming.
Yes, he is. He looks like a king from fairytale stories. When he was a prince he could have chosen a princess to be marry, but he chose a common, former journalist Letizia Ortiz, now Queen Letizia. Rumors said that their marriage is not a happy one.
King Felipe is a Bourbon. For the ignorant the Bourbons are of the French royal family. He's also related to the Greek Royal family from his mother. and related to both Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria. The guy is pure royalty.
We don't really care bro😂 who has made them "ROYAL" ? Their ancestors who where super narcissist and lazy to work. Or they were assassins and killed the previous kings. This "ROYALTY" is hilarious 🤣
@@knownanonymous1691 Like I said ignorant, before capitalism. Monarchy was a form of government in Europe. So you're thinking about the way these guys are now. But back then kings and queens had total power. You have to remember that under monarchy Spain became the first European nation to become a world power. Under the monarchy system England became a world power. This is why you speak English in the United States. These are just remnants of these countries Glory Days. But under the kings and queens that these countries reached the heights of the power.
@@Prone-Ski_BX i'm aware of that but i'm amazed that some people look at it as if it's something super extraordinary! but naturally these people were just lucky to born as "royals" That's pure luck rather than pure royalty.
Two great kingdoms for two great nations with a glorious past with alliances and disputes. They are family, even the queen is a distant descendant of The Cid. King Felipe VI has in Vermudo I (797 a.d.) his most distant ancestor. Greetings from Spain.
King of Spain is so handsome and he carries himself so well. i don't think there's anything wrong when he gave the Queen a kiss on a cheek. very touching and polite. plus, aren't they related to one another?
One of the few state visitors to actually inspect the guard of honour with reasonable interest. Most just look straight ahead and pay little attention. I approve.
I swear this King is truly an example for the hispanic community, he cares about ongoing issues and addresses them as such, and speaks 5 languages or so, which is truly amazing
Spanish people, yes. Spanish monarchy? Disgraceful! Try to live here and you'll see. Say something about a guy some call king and you literally go to jail. VI is a rude disgusting man and his father, former king Juan Carlos stole milions from the country...Study your facts!...
As a spanish person Who was living in the UK for 2 years I will say: I'm against monarchy anyway because is an expensive theatre, but feeling respect for the English one which is more serious than Spanish one. The wedding of Prince William with Kate Middleton meant more money; but the wedding of Prince Felipe with Letizia Rocasolano meant money losses; just for to start because OMG if I speak about the abdicated king who have to many non-recognized sons/daughters.
This man is the last of his kind. A real King, in his conduct and elegance. He is a true gift to Spain. Queen Elizabeth sure wished that her son's would have some similarities..
I remember all the tacky paper painted crowns after his visit on lampposts. 😂. Think the feeling was one of ‘If we must host, we must’. Queen gets on better with Margrethe II of Denmark. Probably wouldn’t get in her personal space too.
king felipe such a gentle well mannered king...far from the old kings in history were ruthless...this king felipe is a blessing in spain...i luv spain wish to come back there...i luv their country...madrid,toledo,avila,salamanca,granada,sotogrande,sevila,cadiz n barcelona..am grateful i been to those cities...and more in the future visit....God willing
I think it goes very well. He kisses her cheek because they're family, or monarchs I don't know, and then kisses her hand because she's a lady. At least that's the way the King of Spain always greets foreign female royalty.
MsPierre31 . family. Fhilipe, the Queen and prince Philp are all decedants of queen Victoria and Denmarks king Christian 9. prince Philip is first cousin to king Felipes mothers father
Felipe is directly descended from Queen (Eugene) Ena of Spain, who was a daughter of Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Beatrice, and his Mother is directly descended from King Christian IX of Denmark(through his daughter Thyra)what an old fashioned name!

Tho this is taken few years back. It’s so nice to see the Queen Smiling & being Comfortable in the company of King if Spain. She looks so Relaxed and with that Lovely Smiles.. AT present with these TREACHEROUS TRAITORS GIVING THE QUEEN MENTAL STRESS & DISRESPECT, WE ALL FEEL SYMPATHETIC for the Queen & her RF.
They say the looks of a person can define a person's character. And I'm not being flattering, Saying you're georgous. hope you don't mind sending me a friend request or if you don't mind just send me a message? God bless you!!!
The history of Spain and England has been like that of two brothers who always have confrontations but after all they are brothers and they love and need each other.
She seemed genuinely happy to see and to receive the kiss from the King. Maybe wrong but the Queen seems to be a sweet person. I'd like to sit down and have a visit with her.
As a British person I admire our Queen greatly, as a Monarch but most of all as a good honouorable hard working woman, and she just grows in the affections of most of her people as she ages.
Spain and United Kingdom are both in good hands with excellent monarchs and heirs. It is really interesting to see monarchs meeting people of equal rank. It must be nice for them.
I don’t think there is any embarrassment in HM Queen's expression - she fully expected to be kissed and then to have her hand lightly kissed. It is the way of European royalty who have a family connection. King Felipe VI or Philip VI (Felipe Juan Pablo Alfonso de Todos los Santos de Borbón y Grecia) is a great-great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and thus 3rd cousin once removed of Elizabeth II. I actually suspect she was surprised at how tall he is!

My full respect and appreciation to His Majesty to the Great King. The great King of Great Spain today, yesterday and tomorrow. I send my Love and Peace to every one in Spain. I am an Egyptian man, I am from ( Abou El Fadl and Fadli ) family in El Beheira Governorate " Safet Al Horiah village ", and part of my family moved to El Sayyida Zeinab neighborhood in Cairo, Egypt. My ancestors roots go back to the native people of the Iberian Peninsula. My ancestors convertd to Islam In the Andalusian era in the Middle Ages. They were native people of the Iberian Peninsula. In other words they came From " Celts and Libyans Iberians " and Romans and Vandals, Alans, Visigoths, and Basques, Vikings. They were not Arabs, They were not Amazighs. They never been Arabs and they never been Amazighs. Actually We need to reform the writing of Iberian history today to give my ancestors their historical rights. The war in the Iberian Peninsula, " my ancestral homeland " was a religious war in that time, not a racial war not Ethnic war at all. In other words the war in that time was between Catholic Cherch and Islam, It was crusades war. Alot of native Iberians believed in Islam " became Muslims ", part of of Iberians was Sephardic Jews, and another part was Protestant Christians and another part was Protestant Christians besides Catholics. All these people had to convert to Roman Catholic Christianity faith or to leave their homeland through and by the end of the wars. No eran árabes, no eran amazighs.
@@ahmedbawazir8035 Find that information easily on Google. Search for "Victoria grandmother of Europe" Talks about how the late Queen Victoria of the United Kingdoms children married into the different European royal families
True. The granddaughter of Queen Victoria (and also niece of Edward VII), Victoria Eugenia, was married with King Alfonso XIII of Spain. Both are the great-grandfathers of actual King.
The King of Spain and Queen Elizabeth are cousins through Queen Victoria and Christian IX of Denmark. King Felipe is a descent of Christian IX of Denmark through his mother Queen Sofia, who was born a princess of Greece. He is also related closely to Prince Phillip, who was born a prince of Greece. There are a lot of familial connections between the British and Spanish royals.

I like King Felipe a lot. I’ve seen him and his family (the Queen and two princesses) and they seem very normal considering they are royalty. They hang out in restaurants, shops etc with minimal fuss.
Pero a ver, que te ha dado un hombre que no ha trabajado jamás en su vida para que le llames rey y encima le estimes?? Es que España realmente ha parado en el tiempo. 🤯
Juan Carlos and Sofia, who are parents of the current King of Spain, are great-great grandchildren of Queen Victoria of England. Same as Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Phillip the Duke of Edinburgh. Her legacy of devotion serving her people, expands further, accepting cultural differences especially, among family members who love her.
They're relatives after all. Spain and England have had a long history together. It's a sign of affection and the Queen should feel happy that a handsome King kissed her lol.
Note that the King of Spain is equal in rank to the Queen of Great Britain, so he does not bow to her but kisses her cheek, as they are family. Neither does his wife, the Queen of Spain, curtsy to the Queen of Great Britain. This is all based on equal rank.
Monarchs, even when they are not related, do not bow or curtsy to each other because they are of equal rank. I have heard some British people claim that Elizabeth is superior to other monarchs but this is simply not true.
Queen Elizabeth II is the worlds most senior monarch. Akihito, Emperor of Japan is the 24th most senior monarch. With only 28 years 186 days he has a long way to go to catch Elizabeths 65 years 156 days.
Nothing awkward about it, quite elegant and natural, actually. The kings mother , Queen Sofia of Spain and Princess of Greece is a direct cousin of Prince Philippe

Hello friend how are you doing. I'm Aaron hamptman chatting from California nice to meet you⚘. I really love and appreciate your comments. I really want to know more about you. Where are you from❤
Queen Elizaberh II, King Juan Carlos I, Prince Phillip and Queen Sophia are all great-grand-children of Queen Victoria. King Felipe VI is a nephew of Queen Elizabeth
Funny thing is that Philip VI belongs to a much more traditional house in european aristocracy and royalty than Elizabeth II, despite his informal behavior.
