So I always thought that telling my story would be horrific. No, not if the right person helped me. Thank you Adam. "Fatal Fantasies" was the springboard for "The King of Stolen Valor". You gave me a voice & most importantly significance. HIV is merely the backdrop for who I am today. Adam, you helped stop the stigma & defined me as a person not a statistic. 👍👏✌️

Man there standard for people in custody is low. My first deployment we had a COP with a police station connected but separated with a large wall. Occasionally, we had to do "guardian angel" missions for high ranking officers to go to the afghan side (police station) and be their body guard. I saw a lot of interrogations and holding cells. One dude accidentally hit and killed a little girl with his car. I actually saw it happened it was a freak accident. Afghan law requires those at loss must determine a value of loss (approved by a court) before the man can be released. Well these parents were grieving over a lost child so he sat there for six months before the debt was settled. I forgot to mention the cell is a slab of concrete, poorly assembled crude wooden box for a seat, chain link fence, outside, and it's right next to a skit trench (where they dump human waste). Everytime I went over I brought the dude bottles of water, soap, blankets, and cokes. He was suffering because he did the honest thing and stopped. Most afghans would have floored it after they hit someone. So yeah, at that time there were no standards for treatment really. You were at the mercy of your jailer.

During a joint mission us and AUP they blow up his truck with an IED I'm certain was made for one of the double v hull strykers we rode in. He wanted to end the corruption in the police force and was a solid man. I do get what you're saying though. It got to a point we couldn't even tell AUP they had a mission upcoming with us let alone what or where until we are giving the ramp brief. Out of fifty officers I'm certain there was twenty five moles.

The weirdest part is that he was actually special forces for a little while. But instead of taking that achievement, maybe gone into law enforcement (which given his personality, thank god he didn't) or became a legit contractor. But he was so determined to be IRL Sam Fisher that instead of just working with what he had, he decided to sneak into Afghanistan, lie to authorities, start a paramilitary, and torture people. If the guy was just 20% more motivated and 100% less insane, we might remember him as "Jack Idema - Former Green Beret and military contractor" rather than "Jack Idema - Psychopathic war tourist."

With the rise of true crime there is a lot content that is extremely exploitative but this documentary doesn't just show the spectacle but also the actual fallout and how it has affected his victims. This is probably one of the most ethical true crime documentaries I've seen and you can really see the love, care and effort you put into making this. To make it even more transparent it would be good to, in the future, have the sources you used listed somewhere. I am truly in awe at this story, thank you!

I think the only issue with sources in true crime is that a lot of the time, especially with this doc in particular, the sources are all first hand accounts and documents given directly from the victims or their direct family which aren't possible to source correctly while accounting for privacy
@siriusnicholson747
@siriusnicholson747 2 года назад
@@Tabadi Sure, true crime has been around since the 1500s, but the boom in interest over the past 10 years is way bigger than any of the ones that have come before. With the normalisation of this type of content in the mainstream media and the possibility of making bank, something that hasn't been possible in the same way before since it only was in the 1960s it became a thing viewed as something more than what uncultured people would consume, it's only recently in the history of true crime that it has become something as profitable as it is today.
@siriusnicholson747
@siriusnicholson747 2 года назад
@@matthewv9169 When it comes to this type of content, privacy is never a possibility. Unless you change the name of every person that is involved it will always have a problem with privacy. There is also the line to walk with journalistic integrity and respect for the people involved. When it comes to true crime it's different than any other type of media, since it revolves around real peoples worst moments and things that has affected their entire life. There is a notorious problem within the true crime community of viewing all events as content and by not contacting the people involved and letting them tell their story, if they even want the story to be told, it's just capitalising of someones pain and suffering. You can never produce a black and white documentary of what happened and since it's journalistic and not scientific it's not more than right to have the victims speak about their experiences.
@matthewv9169
@matthewv9169 2 года назад
@@siriusnicholson747 by privacy I don't mean total anonymity. The documents he's referencing in the documentary are personal legal archives that I'm sure are tied up in a whole host of legal issues that would make publishing them very difficult. As it is implied that these documents are his main sources not being able to publish them so they can be checked would make citing them near useless. To touch on the exploitative nature of true crime as a whole. I think the issue is far, far less with the sub genre of true crime and is a symptom of modern journalism as a whole. All of the most popular ways that most people consume news and stories about tragedy is through groups that have crafted their entire business model around capitalizing off of tragedy. Whether it be cable news, social media (especially facebook), or even many times through print. Unless someone is going out of their way to find first hand sources for info they are already contributing to a super exploitative journalistic cycle.

There is no way anyone in the pentagon would ever use unsecured lines of communication to any operator in a war zone through channels that could very easily be intercepted by enemy forces. Also there is no way he obtained intelligence that the cia missed, that agency had assets all over Afghanistan and had the technology to scrub the Internet and other means of communication to gather chatter so the very idea that one dude who flew to Afghanistan himself negotiated the handover of tapes is ridiculous at best.

I don't believe she ever got it. She claims she's suddenly basically cured. Her type are leaches used to living off others. None of her story is believable. Jack's story is more believable. Hell most of this documentary during the Afghanistan period is literally the US government denying video and document evidence proving Jack's story. But we are supposed to believe the US story after the fact and ignore them on tape doing exactly what Jack says. Who knows. But the Penni nonsense is pure fiction.

As I watch this I'm at a veteran's memorial site in Wisconsin. I can't help but realize that all these tributes are what this Jack guy wanted for himself. He wanted to be the hero that these men and women and even service animals actually were. I'm sorry to everyone who suffered the actual military service that was anything like Jack wanted his entire life to be. I'm grateful that my service was relatively peaceful and "boring" (which as a nuclear power plant operator is exactly what you really want out of a job where an exciting day is equivalent to a really bad day). That said I did suffer also a tragic experience while I was in service and struggle with romantic interests and enjoyment of life in general. When the interview with Penni started, I didn't think I was going to have much sympathy for somebody who would start a relationship with somebody like that, but as she went on, I related more and more to her story. Abusive relationships don't start out abusive, and even the worst people have happy moments in their lives. I really can relate to her talking about how she hates him, but wants to remember him for the happy times. People aren't black and white, and its hard to know somebody that you had happy times with could hurt you so badly. In my experience, its really confusing to have loved somebody when they did such terrible things to you, and its so hard to look back and sort through all the conflicting feelings. I decided at the beginning of this video that I’d wait until I’d finished it in its entirety before I’d make a comment. I expected to have a basket full of snide comments about “Jack”, but that’s not the case. Penni Idema is the only person of which I’m left thinking after watching this. To have had everything stripped away from her in such a way, by having been initially conned by that man into a relationship, and then being left with the feeling that she will never be able to have a fully rounded level of intimacy with anyone has to be one of the most difficult things anyone could ever face. And, yet here she is, showing such grace while facing these challenges head on each and every day. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen someone so astounding and inspiring before in my life. Penni, I wish nothing but the absolute best for you. I hope that your life continues to be better and better as each day passes, and that you know how uplifting your story is for so many people in this world. As much of it as is highlighted within this documentary, that is. So many people will see that struggles and difficulties can be overcome by hearing your story. You are an amazing woman. Thank you for sharing your story with us. And, thank you to this channel, Oki’s Weird Stories, for ensuring that it was Penni who was given a voice…not only a voice, but also that it was she who your audience is left thinking about at the end of this amazing documentary.

Thank you so very much for what you said. Like I said, at the beginning, I didn't think I could do this. I knew people would judge me & it's been very difficult losing everything that mattered to me. But I didn't like the things that were being said that were lies so I thought I had nothing left to lose by telling my story. I want to thank you for watching with an open mind & being kind to me. Truly means alot.
