At the beginning of the second part in our 'Finding Harmony' concert programme, we enjoy marching on to the stage whilst singing the opening verse of this famous hymn by Martin Luther, accompanied by the beat of a drum. From this martial opening, we move into a traditional harmonisation which would have been familiar to protestant church congregations in the 16th-17th centuries. And we conclude with a verse in J. S. Bach's celebrated harmonisation. Through this sequence, we try to demonstrate the versatile and enduring power of this wonderful hymn, from its origins in the early 16th century through to today.

Wonderfully sung! However, in the 3rd stanza "Das Wort sie sollen lassen stahn" you guys seem to sing "und KLEIN Dank dazu haben" (I might be fooled by the acoustics though). It should be "KEIN Dank" instead - not "little thoughts" but "no thoughts". The whole sentence translates roughly to "They shall let God’s word stand for itself and add no other thoughts" (with "Dank" coming from think/denken, not thank/danken). A bad source maybe, revealed by your very clear pronunciation? 😅 Could be easily corrected in future performances - hope you will sing these beautiful pieces very often!

Beautiful rendition 🙏🏻 First and last time I heard this sung was by a class mate in school nearly 20 years ago. It is so much more powerful and has so much more meaning to me today 😌

Beautiful and perfect. Almost. The drum confused me and created an atmosphere of a military march. The hymn has a militaristic aspect and the drum overemphasised that. If it is historically justified then I’ll defer to authenticity.

(1) That's Christianity for you. (2) That's also Christian militarism in Victorian Britain for you. (3) 1860s translation with bad formatting... A mighty Fortress is our God,A trusty Shield and Weapon; He helps us free from every needThat hath us now o'ertaken. The old evil FoeNow means deadly woe;Deep guile and great mightAre his dread arms in fight; On earth is not his equal. With might of ours can naught be done,Soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the Valiant One,Whom God Himself elected.Ask ye, Who is this?Jesus Christ it is.Of Sabaoth Lord,And there's none other God;He holds the field forever.Though devils all the world should fill,All eager to devour us.We tremble not, we fear no ill,They shall not overpower us.This world's prince may stillScowl fierce as he will,He can harm us none,He's judged; the deed is done; One little word can fell him.The Word they still shall let remainNor any thanks have for it;He's by our side upon the plainWith His good gifts and Spirit. And take they our life,Goods, fame, child and wife,Let these all be gone,They yet have nothing won;The Kingdom our remaineth.
