Ray said when they submitted the demo to a record company, they told him Dave's guitar sounding like a barking dog and turned them away... But that was exactly the sound The Kinks wanted!
I remember the first time I heard this classic song on the radio, back in 1964. I was jumping around the house. The look on my parents faces was one of bewilderment. Needless to say The Kinks became my favorite band.
@@alfching2499 firstly while not at all a fan of punk- as a jazz musician- 1 Television was a very decent band. 2 my point was punk got their sound imo from the Kinks slitting their vox amp speakers , and getting a rather dirty sound from their guitars. ✌️
I remember this song vividly though I was only 8 years in '64 when this song first came out, I still remember when the British invasion started around that time with all time greats like The Stones, The Beatles, The Who, The Zombies to name a few and all the other great pioneers of rockin roll during that era. It was a short time after President Kennedy was assassinated and the Ed Sullivan show was event to watch on T.V., a real tribute to Ray Davies and the Kinks in a time of real peace.
On this day in 1965 {January 20th} the Kinks performed "You Really Got Me" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!'... Four months earlier on September 28th, 1964 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #7 and spent 15 weeks on the Top 100... On Sept. 10th, 1964 it reached #1 {for 2 weeks} in the U.K.; and #2 in Australia and #4 in Canada... Jimmy O'Neill, Shindig's host, passed away nine days ago on January 11th at age 73... R.I.P. Mr. O'Neill...
@@marine4lyfe85 Actually it's two times on album recordings. Three, if you are counting ""All Day And All Of The Night" which they did in their pre record gigs.
@dubbly1 They're backing singers. The Kinks frequently used them in the mid 70's - especially on the concept albums - and they even had a song to themselves on PRESERVATION ACT 2 - SCRAPHEAP CITY.
I saw the kinks in the early 70's (or so) at the Melbourne Festival Hall (the 'house of stoush' as it was known as) and this song was (from memory) the show ending-song and it was played just as fast and friggin' loud! I thought the roof was going to blow off the old barn...great effort by The Kinks!!!!

Hey, man, Densmore is such a sick drummer... he could drop his stick twenty times in one epic song like "The End" or "When the Music's Over" or "Celebration of the LIzard" and still keep it on pace, or at least save it. That's what made The Doors great, lol... but yeah, this is time for The Kinks and I would've condemned you for bringing up nearly any other band aside from The Doors on their page, so yeah, back to the music, babe.
Bendiciones!. Lima-Perú. INKATERRA 21-12-2013
@kevj247 which is the wit, kazrules2007's "love that damn accent of his...", or my "doesn't surprise me, he's British.." ? Btw, I'm not British nor from the United States of America but I do know people from both countries. ;-)
rickkuhn Looks like they didn't have a camera that would capture that angle. Maybe he figured he'd zoom in on Ray's guitar thinking most people wouldn't even know. Maybe he figured he should do SOMETHING, haha.
