You absolutely nailed it. I’ve been saying this since the phantom was released. There are enough optional internals to fit literally anything you need for long exploration. Fuel scoop Guardian FSD Booster Double SRV bay (because losing one happens) Cargo bay (32 tons) Size 3D repair limpet controller Size 3D collector limpet controller (just in case / or for mat gathering) Fully engineered 2A AFMU Planetary probe scanner Mine hits 64LY and still boosts to over 520m/s (who needs a fighter bay with those speeds?) It’s an asp explorer on steroids. My favourite ship in the game And yes - I still have 2 lightweight beams on board (just in case I need to shoot something) guardian structure? It’s about time someone made a video to show off this beauty. And props for having Scott Manley on the vid. O7 commander.

One of the best Elite Dangerous videos I've ever seen, and that's no exaggeration.

That moment when FD wants to make a multipurpose ship, but accidentally makes an exploration ship instead...

All I have the ability to say is thank you, you have done what so many people have failed to do and that is giving life to the ships in which you speak about. You and you alone have shown us the beauty, the complexity and everything we have wanted to see / hear and know about them. With the way you speak about these ships it gives us pilots a whole new respect for each and every one of them and for that I say thank you.

Just finished my Sag. A* run in Spooky Snek, my exploration Phantom. I took a slightly different outfitting philosophy, and ended up engineering it fully. I thought to myself, "I know I can make this thing go 70 LY per jump, but will it be fun to fly if I do that?" I decided the answer to that was no. Instead, Spooky Snek jumps 60 LY, and can permaboost at 580 m/s, as well as having pretty beefy impact shields.

My wife walks by and I point out the awesome visuals on the screen, telling her what it is. She says, "Oh, that's really cool, but it looks like an asshole. An asshole made of smoke. I'm sorry, but it does!" So glad I married her.

My phantom has taken me all the way to Beagle Point for DW2. The while time, I've never gotten tired of the ship. It's the perfect exploration ship. Less jump range than the Conda, yes, but twice as maneuverable in supercruise. The front of the ship hanging over the cockpit, constantly reminding you what you're flying.

I went to Beagle point and back in my trusty Phantom, and while doing so criss crossed the Galaxy a bit looking for nice things. I flew an AspX before that, but the Phantom has that awesome range while it still carries everything I want to take with me. There's no need to compromise with this ship. It's truly outstanding!

You've rekindled my love of elite. I was starting to burn out on it, but this episode and the Anaconda one reminded me what's truly important in Elite. "On these hollowed grounds we shall build a powerful engine, massive in technical scope but elegant in design. It shall propel us to the stars and beyond until our boundless curiosity is satisfied"

Went out to Colonia, then to Sagittarius A, and then to Beagle Point... But I did it on my Dolphin.

Guess I'll add this to the list somewhere after the Corvette. Also I've gotta add the phone call quality to Scott's voice at the start adds a different feel, it's fitting.

The Phantom also makes for a respectable core mining ship. Some people, (me included) think the Python is a bit slow for core mining, and don't have the patience to attempt to fill it's hold. With the Phantom, you have a fast, agile ship, which still holds a respectable amount, yet doesn't take too long to fill. Also the cockpit view is great for scanning the ring.

When I heard that voice I didn't realize who it was until he started talking and I went "wait a minute I remember him from his Kerbal days, thats Scott"

I am not a gamer, I just like your breakdown of the ships. I like star ships! I have watched all of you ship breakdowns and wish there was more. More, please!

The Phantom has good looks, I'll give you that. but, I'll stick with my Mk II Krait, I get 57Ly in solo explorer trim and 53 in armed escort trim.

Man, this was the video that took me in my Phantom when I was starting my exploration career.. Now after more than 1k first discovered systems I can assure you everything you said is absolutely true.

I love how the "downsides" of the phantom all boil down to it being mislabeled as a multipurpose ship rather than an explorer only. If it were properly labeled, then there'd be no downside to lower armor or fewer hardpoints. If anything, there'd be comments on it having too many hardpoints

I just noticed that the engines look similar to the ones on the American XB-70 bomber, maybe that’s where the devs got the inspiration from.

I thought about getting an ASP Explorer, but now I go for the Phantom. I really like your videos, keep up the good work.

As I said in the In-game chat, this video, is what made me go for my Out-of-bubble Long-Range Exploration Phantom, The Baal Shamin. I keep heading for Colonia on the Highway, but end up taking in the sights everywhere else. This is indeed that good a ship!

I seriously have to stop watching your ship reviews...I'm going broke buying and outfitting them all :p Every review you force an emotional connection with the ship that we simply have to experience to appreciate, AND instill in us, that we must. Much like the wife, you got me buying sh*t we don't need but we eventually come to love. For that, I thank you. Amazing videos, every damn one!

I was disappointed to see Yamiks say this ship is overshadowed by the ASP Explorer. Sure, it's magnitudes cheaper, but if you're going to spend that much time in something, it should be the Phantom.

Does anyone actually use this ship? I’ve tried outfitting mine as an explorer, a rescue ship, a thargoid hunter, etc, but nothing’s quite felt right. I’d like to know what others use it form. I mostly use a Corvette, Krait Mk 2, and DBX, and something else for thargoids,,, I don’t do everything, but I’m guessing this is for people who want to leave the bubble permanently, as the anaconda designed for travel is apparently stripped bare..

Anyone else come to this series to decide on if you want to purchase a ship or not? Or is that just me

I starting watching this video really confused why he likes the phantom. Now I get it. Also the cinematic and atmosphere in this video gave me chills. An awesome video I'm subbing for this. Keep up the awesome work!!

Used the Phantom for my Papa Palin Trip. Did half of the trip with the DBX of my pal who nearly had a breakdown after reaching 5k. That was a difference like night and day. The Phantom took me out and back to the bubble in little more time than it took him to get one way. And I just kept going for 2k more because I saw some interesting nebulae. The phantom was also the ship that got me my name on the starmap. I love that thing to bits.

I know this is a bit of an old video but i got to say i keep coming back to this video because when you bring on Scott (6:01) with the visuals and how you make it sound like he is on a rougher sounding phone call it has got to be my favorite piece of filmmaking I've seen on this platform. WELL DONE

For some strange reason nobody seems to be talking about the Phantom when it comes to exploration. When I was looking for an exploration ship online it was basically all DBX, AspX and the Anaconda posts. Hell, I even came across a few Orca builds. But, ironically, no Phantom. It's hidden in plain sight. It's also unavailable in most of the stations I regularly visit. The terrible representation of ship specs within the game doesn't help it either. It's true you can easily mistake it for a base version of the Krait Mk II, with no air conditioning or power windows. I kinda hate the Asp's looks and the fact that it doesn't really bring much to the table for the sacrifice in jump range and price over the DBX, the Anaconda can't really get me excited and in the mood for exploration, it just has different vibe to it, plus the insane cost to purchase and outfit it properly. I absolutely love the DBX, but.....it's a bit too small for embarking on a serious expedition. It forces me to pack a bit too tight than what I'd like. But this.....this could be just right. Update several hours later: It actually is just right...so right it's perfect! I was able to bring everything with me and still jump 42ly (no guardian fsd booster yet, 16 limpets onboard) - Pulse lasers + multi-cannons | 5A FSD with grade 5 engineering | 5A thrusters with grade 3 clean drives | 5A powerplant with grade 1 overcharge | 5A stock Power Distributor | 4A Shield generator | 64 cargo | AFMU | Fuel scoop | Repair + Refuel + Collector Limpet Controller | Surface scanning | Vehicle hangar. Everything I'll ever need for exploration, rescue and support. Already helped out a few stranded NPC commanders and saved others being attacked by a 'Conda and 3 Pythons...with the help of the local security (barely made it alive out of that one). Repaired my hull and modules and continued on my way, feeling better than ever!

A funny thing. I just started Elite dangerous about a week ago and thanks to the wonderful videos from the community I was able to quickly make some good money in this game from exploration and mining. Your videos have been a wonderful sales pitch for deciding which ship should I buy and honestly I would’ve never known about some of the great ships I’ve flown around in. So thanks these videos have been a joy to watch.

This could honestly work as an advertisement for Elite Dangerous just on its own. Just play this at a movie theater as a preview and take out any references to it being a "game," and then at the end flash up the Elite logo. I think that would blow some minds.

Took my Phantom on the DW2 trip, and it was a supremely comfortable ride. Those 260LY+ jumps didn't hurt!

I love your reviews man, even though you shit talked my adder lol. Jokes aside though I can tell you put a lot of time into these which is awesome to see. I can definitely understand what people love about the phantom as an explorer with a potentially huge jump range. I picked the mk2 even though it's not as suited. Mainly because it's not filled with a metric f%$! ton of red paint, and the mk2 can shoot out a little canyon runner for zipping around new worlds without threat of your main ship exploding off the side of a mountain. Plus how can I ever forgive them for removing the coffee maker lol.

The only combat you should be doing in the Phantom is evasive defense. Mine launchers and turreted frags to jack the gankers trying to pop you- my squad formed 2 squads of 4 each so it was 8v1 vs my millenium phantom to shinrarta, and they got my shields down once. 590 ms with a 55 ly jump range, 800 shields and 1000 armor. yep. I planned this specifically for han solo to fly.,

I just switched from an Asp Explorer to a Krait Phantom. It's more versatile and durable in every sense compared to the AE. Don't get me wrong. The Asp was great early on when resources and credits were sparse and hard to come by. Once you get enough credits under your belt it's a fool's game not to run with this ship for long range exploration.

I would say that I like the Phantom but I don't, I only bought one to look at its engines and chuckle over the name "Millenial Fail-kin". It is objectively wrong to not bring at least a size 5 fighter bay on a exploration trip, how the hell are you going to fly a krait through canyons like a madperson? You gotta have something for a little joyride to break up the boring as hell gameplay that is exploration.

Love my phantom. Jumps 70lys. Has a repair limpit, 2 afm, srv, small cargo for my limpits (craft on demand) and all the exploration tools. Fantastic ship!

Years down the road I thought you might like to know I'm finding your videos after recently downloading the game on Xbox. I love this game and I love how you showcase the ships and why we should love each one.

The comment about this being like Top Gear or should I say Grand Tour is quite accurate, a brilliant take on a review. Taking about must do's, I genuinely believe everyone should visit Beagle Point at least once, you really do get a sense of achievement.

This has probably been asked, but there are too many comments to sift through, so I'll ask it anyway: What's your Krait Phantom exploration build?

I love my Phantom. I love my Mk II. I always have difficulty to choose between them ;) Great series. and I would love to hear what You think about the T10D. The "not so special cow", which I actually love flying. Why? because it handles like huge brick as it is one. ;)

My co-pilot likes to curl up in my lap, so I can't fly naked. She falls asleep on the job all the time, but she takes payments in cans of tuna so I put up with her.

This ship could be worse in every way than the Asp-X and I'd still take it over the asp because it doesn't sound like it's powered by farts.

Went to Beagle Point in my Phantom. Had no problems what so ever. With the extra slot I fitted 2 auto-repair modules and a research limpit. Awesome ship. One of my favorites.

By "orbiting" what he really means is ... circling the drain.

The Phantom is a great ship for exploring, but you can NEVER get me out of my conda. Better jump, more internals to mess with, and the feeling of landing on a planet, getting that SRV out (and having a spare in case you blow up the first) and driving along side this football field you just parked on a planet never before seen by human eyes . . . can't top it. o7

Elite Dangerous is the only game I have that is legitimately relaxing for me to play. When I get pissed off because of World of Warships, or For Honor, or GTA V, or a number of other games, I always come back to Elite Dangerous because the only times I ever get stressed is when an NPC pirate tries to pull me out of super cruise, and that rarely happens for me.

This model is about a must buy for people getting to mid-tier ships. Not the best in anything but good for almost anything.

Recently bought one of these. I was spending a lot of time in my Mk2, but the Phantom was recommended. It felt like exaggeration - it's a worse Mk2, as you say. But no. 70LY jump range later and everything feels in reach. I've recently had my first discoveries in my Phantom. It's taken me all over the place. I adore this ship, and as I unlock more engineers, it's the ship getting the most love

New FSD = 75+ ly jump range. Even less of a reason to fly anything else :)

This video pushed me towards replacing my AspX. I feel like I'm cheating on it though. On the other hand my AspX has dragged me everywhere I wanted to go. Going to let it rest while I take the Phantom out where I need to go. A few places on the edge that have been out of reach.

Try this build on for size: - 6A Fuel Scoop - 5C Bi-Weave Shield with grade 4 Thermal Resist - Class 5 Guardian FSD Booster - 3 size 3 Guardian Shield Boosters - 2 0E Shield Boosters with High-Capacity grade 4 or 5 - 2 0E Shield Boosters with Resistance Augmented grade 4 or 5 - 2 Class 3 Beam Lasers with Lightweight grade 4 - 2 Class 2 Railguns with Lightweight grade 4 and Plasma Slug special effect - 6D Dirty Engines with Drag Drives - maxed out long range FSD, obviously Now you have a ship that can jump 60ly with 2,000mj effective shields, still deal impressive damage, and also never runs out of ammo. Still has room for a DSS scanner and a small SRV hangar so it's still just as good at exploration. The Phantom may not be a true Multipurpose ship, but the correct label would've been the same as the Diamondback Explorer: Combat Exploration. The Phantom is only really awful as a cargo hauler (it can even be a decent miner, albeit overpriced.)

I own both a Krait Phantom and a Diamondback Explorer. The DBX has been my primary explorer for well over a year. I, uh...I use the Phantom for mining. (In my defense, it's great at it, and it's agile enough to weave through a planetary ring and outrun pesky pirates. So I guess it's a good multi-role ship, in the sense that it's good at exploration and mining, and technically, two is "multi".)
