The Kubota Tractor We (Almost) Never Recommend. But that might be changing. There is a stripped-down version of the Kubota BX1880 that might be the perfect fit for some as the lawn tractor market disappears.

I really like my BX1880. I have a farm, so I have larger tractors with loaders and a skid steer. I use the 1880 around the house for mowing and yard work. I have a QH05 quick hitch, a 4' box blade, a RTR1242 tiller, and a rear dumping scoop/carrier that I built. I wanted the 54" deck, because I have some places a 60" won't go between. It's very quiet and smooth mowing. I like how the engine is turned around "backwards" from a conventional tractor. This keeps the heat off the operator, blowing it all out the front. It's impressive how well it handles the box blade. I didn't get a loader valve. I bought it in the fall of 2019. There were some specials that fall, and I got the tractor and deck for $8400.00. I should have bought ten at that price and sold them later.

I love my BX1880, with the loader and weight box off it is light enough on its feet and makes a nice cut, and is far more nimble than the JD 317 it replaced. I mow about 1/2 acre. SSQA loader and 3 pt have been major back savers over the past year. Worth every penny.

I’ve got an 1880 with the front loader (la344 w/ ssqa) and the 54” deck and I love it. For almost everything I do it can handle it. My next jump will probably be into a b01 probably rather than a higher spec BX.

I have the BX2680...does everything I need to do as well....I only have an acre so I don't need/want anything any larger, just needed the loader and 3 point functions for chores.....but yep the B series would be a nice upgrade from the BX for sure. I went with the BX2680 for the additional PTO HP rating and happy with the decision, it runs my Land Pride 50" RTR0550 roto-tiller extremely well, and the 60" mid mount mower extremely well also.

I bought a bx 2360 without the loader valve for my wife to mow with. This was a great decision , steering is super easy and it's comfortable to operate. A zero turn was out of the question as our yards are to steep. I put 1 1/2 inch wheel spacers on the back and filled the back tires and added a front weight bracket. Only other thing I have done was make a bracket to move the seat forwards 3 inches so the wife could reach the foot controls, it still goes back far enough for me to use it.

I was shopping for a zero turn for my property this past summer after having three of them in the past, but ended up getting a used bx1870 with mower deck and 3-pt hitch instead. It's awesome, far more comfortable over rough terrain than my previous zero turns, quieter, power steering is like butter, and I can move the boat trailers around easily with the 3 point hitch to mow under them. It's not as fast to mow my property as my last Simplicity zero turn was, but it's close! As Neil eludes to, I do wish I could have found one with a loader though for a reasonable price for those tasks where my svl75 or u55 just destroy the lawn (ie any task).

I do love Kubota's I had a L2800 when we owned a larger farm property years back.

Just brought the BX1880 with 54” deck and quick change loader. Why I brought the 1880. 1. Cost 2. will use 90% of time for mowing 2 acres, replacing 48” Craftsman 3. have occasional need for loader/forklift so don’t want to always ask friend. Clearing an acre so will assist with moving downed trees and grading afterward. 3. RU-vid video on a owner of 1880 and is observations. 4. May want a small garden one day. When I build a home, I layout landscaping to fit what I will be mowing with so my new landscape will have curves and widths that match the tractor.

They do have a rear remote option. Adding it after the fact though is extremely expensive...wish I wouldn't have let me salesman talk me out of having the 3rd function and rear remotes added to my BX when I ordered it, kind of marked off a few attachments I could have purchased but not having the 3rd function just limited my tractor usage, and adding those functions now is about triple the cost as they would have been when I ordered the tractor.

Simple things such as smooth ride means a lot. The zero turn rides like a brick but it’s paid for. These videos sure helped me identify the wants vs needs when I got my MX5200 and saved me boat loads of money. After your reviews and demos of the L vs MX I realized 4x4 and HST were not needed in my case.

I went with a John Deere 1023e loader configured a couple years ago because of dealer convenience and oddly enough, it was cheaper than every single competitor at the time. It's 6 inches longer than the bx1880 but tighter turn radius. I can see a few situations where shorter might outweigh turning. I think Kubota has the better hydraulic disconnect figured out as well. At the time I paid $15,200, that same tractor on the Deere site is now over $20k. Ide never pay that now. I'm assuming Kubota is in the same ballpark with the bx2380. That extra 9hp is needed if you do snow removal of any sort too
@mikesmathers5752
@mikesmathers5752 Год назад
Neil, while I completely understand where you are coming from, I went through this very same value equation when I bought my GR2120-2. I bought the GR with a bagger and snow blower. The equivalent BX1880 would have been a full 6k plus more expensive with the "bare" configuration you went through in this video. The $20k BX configuration which would be functionally similar to my GR config would have been far beyond my financial capabilities at the time. While I get what you are saying, if I was going to go in for over $20k, it would have made more sense to me to just get the BX2380 and a loader as well once I was in that deep. Fact of the matter is the GR does everything I NEED it to do at the price I could afford to pay. If I could have afforded the 26k of the BX2380 with loader, blower, and bagger, I would have just done it. If I had to do it now with the same financial constraints, I would wait for the GR instead of over-extending myself for more tractor than I actually need to do the work I do routinely. While I would love to have a loader and could find work for it, the fact is the VERY occasional use it would get would not be worth more than $10k+ more in initial purchase price. Thank you again for your time on this and keep up the great content!

Yep. We've got a tree farm that is basically bith sides of one ridge through the middle of it. Even with UTV tires, the zero turn is less mobile than we'd like. We've got a 62hp tractor, but considering going with a stripped down BX or one of the Korean subcompacts without a loader, just for mowing. They're the same price as a pro ZTR now that they have gone crazy in price, and especially in the hills that are hard on a ZTR, it'll last 3x as long and be 4wd. Mowing isn't as fast, but that's probably the only down side.

We currently have an older Kubota B9200 that fills our tractor needs, but with moving to a new property we were looking at mowers. So I was getting quotes on some X700 series John Deeres as some relatives have one and I thought it was a great mower when I used it. Well I went and got some quotes, and basically talked myself out of it due to cost. I went to Kubota and was originally looking at the GR2120, but I saw the smallest tractor I've ever seen, a BX1880 without FEL and with a 54" deck and had to start weighing that as an option. I think if we were to compare a 7 series John Deere, you would have to compare the BX1880 to a X758 (diesel, 4wd), which has a list price of $17880 from my local dealer (54" deck so its apples to apples). Kubota quoted me 14,100 for a BX1880 with loader valve and 54" deck. With the BX1880 you get the same basic features as a X758, diesel + 4wd. Some pro's are its less expensive, has a 3 point and rear pto, ROPS (if you want to count that), and at least our local dealer had 0% for 84 month financing (John Deere had 4.9% for 60 months for their X700 series). Con's, I don't believe its as maneuverable, less HP ,and with the 3 point its longer. I was able to negotiate in a RTA1250 tiller with the BX for less than the X758. I'm telling myself its just a big garden tractor. Worst case scenario, if our B9200 bites the dust, I can get a loader for this tractor and be set, otherwise the plan is to keep it as a mower and eventually upgrade into a larger tractor to replace the B9200. Our BX is being delivered on Friday and I can't wait!

Good video Neal! A couple thoughts and corrections for you. The John Deere equivalent is a X758, not X750. The X758 with diesel and 4x4 base retail is $15,000, not a cheap machine by any means. While your opinion on the pricing factor is correct it is very important to remember application of the machine. A tremendous amount of X700 owners are using them almost exclusively mowing. You have spent enough time mowing lawn to know that the machine configuration is very important to the comfort, maneuverability, and efficiency of mowing grass. If all your doing is cutting grass, the BX is not the ideal machine, no matter how cheap it is. The X700 will be more compact, steer sharper, and much lighter weight which is better in most mowing applications. If your only looking at cost, your right, buy the BX but for most of the X700 owners out there, the X700 is the best fit even if it is more expensive. Garden tractors have not died, there is a tremendous pool of people who need and or want a garden tractor. Good video! I enjoy your accurate representation of equipment!

I feel the days of the heavy duty garden tractor are limited, Simplicity just discontinued the Legacy, Deere has discontinued many attachments you used to be able to get on the X700 including the loader and even my local Kubota dealer says their demand for the GR has declined as the capability of that machine is very limited and even if you had the option for a rear PTO many times on garden tractors as you mentioned Neil it would add a lot of cost to the price and now you would be able to get a BX which has it standard and it's a category 1, not a 0 like many garden tractors are making rear implements harder to find.

When I bought my GR 2120, it was $2000 cheaper than the gas engine version of the 4wd Deere. I am absolutely sold on the glide steer feature of the GR 2120. Kubota doesn’t blow their horn loud enough on that brilliant feature, as far as I’m concerned. I still have an older Deere mower that pulls a lawn vac. It is still an excellent mower, but my go to mower is the GR 2120. Kubota, you hit a home run with this machine.

My GR2120-2 is a brilliant piece of equipment, and it truly shines in the winter when I have the snow blower on it. I can keep pace with my neighbor and his BX2360 with front mount blower, inch for inch, foot for foot, and I am more maneuverable than he is. I wish I had the BX, but it was not in the cards for me financially.

@@mikesmathers5752 , my neighbor mowed my lawn for me while I was on vacation. He has a zero turn and a big John Deere. I bought a GR 2120 because it is one of the most capable garden tractors for hilly properties. It has the speed of the zero turns and great turning ability. If you got a hill that scares you and need to cut it I trust this tractor over all the others. I have a MX5400 for heavy work and GR2120 for lawn and sidewalk snowblowing.

I found the price for the Garden Tractors are quite a bit more than they should be for what you get. I needed a smaller tractor for lawn care several years ago and decided on a JD X500. It was expensive, but a lot less than a BX. After several years of owning and using it, it doesn't hold up as well as the Subcompact would. Parts are not cheap either, wife ran into a tree after running over a wasp nest and busted the hood. $1000 to replace. I had a tree fall on the hood of my B2410, it left a dent, and 16 years later, the dent is still there. Cost, $0. Looking back now, I would have been better off with a small subcompact with MMM instead. Would also have a higher resale value than the x500. Heck in 2012 my B2410 was selling at pretty much the same price I paid for it! Not so much for the Deere.

I bought a Deere 1025R four years ago, I priced it against a X-758 with a three point hitch and PTO added. The 1025R was actually cheaper. I think part of that kind of strangeness with the price is marketing, The X-758 is a top of the line lawn/garden tractor where the 1025 is low end sub-compact.
@dirtbeard108

still the same. I went to buy a x758, saw the price and said lets get a bx quote. Ouch.. so i went back to get price on 1025r and it was the lowest price of the three. By about $3000 under a x758 and $4200 less than a 2680

The BX23s (Backhoe model) might do the job as long as you don't need much lift capacity of the loader....you get about 400 pounds of lift capacity with the BX machines. Anymore than that and they really struggle.

Easy to say when money is no object. I had to pick the GR2120-2 over the BX because the BX was going to be WAY more money, as I also have the front mount blower and rear bagger. The BX was not a financially smart move for me at the time. I would make the same decision today.

If you are after "mowing oriented", this is the wrong category to look at. In most ways, a S-140 with a 48" deck is a better lawn mower than my BX23S. I had a old D-155 when I bought my BX23S, and can compare directly. The BX23S with a 54" deck covers some of the large open areas faster than the 48" riding mower, but is less maneuverable. On the BX, I have less confidence working close to the house, garden, or trees, and it just can't fit into some area or get as close to some obstacles. The size and weight is an impediment. The net result is that mowing ~1 acre takes about the same amount of time, but there are more small corners and places the BX doesn't fit that I have to come back to cover with a push mower or string trimmer. For mowing, most people would be better off with a riding or zero-turn mower. Even a cheap riding mower from a big box store. Don't get me wrong, I love my BX. No lawn mower or garden tractor could bring the backhoe, loader, shredder, post digger, tiller, sprayer, spreader, and box blade capability that my BX brings to the table. Knowing that the BX is a terrible lawn mower, I sold my D-155 and it's accessories (trailer, spreader, sprayer) for cash to buy implements for the BX. The BX is a lousy mower, but I am sucking it up and dealing with it for a few years until I stop buying new implements for the BX long enough to buy a low end zero-turn.

@William Sevier The wife talked me into getting a loader for my 2380. I thought it was a joke on a garden tractor but it does come in handy. But if I would've known I'd use the loader thid much I would have bought a b2601 or even a l2501. But I bought my bx to replace a worn out cub cadet 1450. The bx does excellent for what I bought it for. But my project list got just slightly longer after buying the bx.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c Год назад
@@jpoppinga8417 HAHA, yeah the loader is the main reason I stepped up to a sub-compact tractor instead of another garden tractor. My chores list and project list grows all the time, my wallet doesn't on the other hand LOL. If I had more space and a larger shop/barn I would have gotten the B series at least, but due to space constraints I went with the BX. I have the pallet forks as well, which I find all sorts of uses for, and allows me to store my implements/attachments on shelves rather than sitting on the ground taking up more space than necessary. I just use a scaffold with an added home-built lower fixed shelf so I can store 2 implements/attachments on a scaffold. I'll have to pickup another scaffold, rather a couple more as my implements/attachments inventory grows, but its a pretty easy mobile solution for storing those things. I also have the roto-tiller, box blade, and rear grading blade...I use the box blade and grading blade for my driveway quite often...the roto-tiller I only use once or twice a year but the job it does makes it well worth the cost...and saves the back using one of the walk behind tillers. My only complaint is I let my salesman talk me out of buying the 3rd function valve for the loader and a rear remote valve....so I can't get the grapple, and I can't do the hydraulic top link. I'd love to have both added at some point, but the cost of the kits and the $200 an hour labor at the dealer makes it very cost prohibitive. I don't have the patience to do that stuff, I usually break something trying to fix things so no way I'd even attempt at installing that stuff LOL...learned by lesson after attempting to replace a head gasket in my car a couple years ago and it never ran afterwards.
