Now I understand, it just hit me now at 06.30 lulling my infant son to sleep,marathon-binging on everything La's (never let it be said the boy won't be reared on the best music): Lee Maversr's songs are beamed from the same place the Beatles and the Kinks songs were beamed from. It's a place far more ancient than Rock and Roll. The same place were the best Country was beamed from. A place inhabited by Scottish ballads, Irish limericks and Welsh liede. The place were Folk music comes from. There, that is why the La's songs are so timeless and classic. They hit the universal subconscious we all inhabited in one form of another before reaching this current plan of existence. Jesus, I talk like Mavers circa 1996, don't i? And super-straight too!!! :-D

Being a La's fan is hard.... Every time I listen to them my mind becomes full of frustration thinking about what could have been. 1 album.... It's not enough. Thank god for the Kitchen/Crescent Tapes, but it's like having the Beatles Anthology, but not the actual albums.

Love your comment :) Stuff like this is raw and unchiseled but if Lee had stuck with it and taken his time smoothing out those flaws, and shaken some of the pride attached, he could’ve made the second album for sure. I think it really was unfortunate for him because, he’s simultaneously painted as the big villain as well as the hero, but the way he approached music writing wasn’t too dissimilar to the gritty work Frank Zappa had people doing on his spirit quests. It’s a shame artists are hard for the majority of people to read, Lee never got to live his full dreams because nobody believed he was going to ever give it a rest on making them come true. The masters of history didn’t complete their magnum opuses in a matter of months or even years for some; sometimes real art takes absolute blood sweat and tears, and the La’s definitely took that, but Lee had to stop believing in it because nobody else could see it the way he was.

What answer do you want? I'd go with no.... since we don't have em in a way the creator is not appalled by... but the Crescent tape shows progression. Who knows what is there now we have not heard? Lee has never stopped recording, to my knowledge (be it mixing desks or Macbooks!) But even there ten years on Lee plays Fishing Net n goes "just needs more lyrics n chords". So simple, so difficult... She Came Down has the same lyrics even if it's a bit tighter (might whack it up for yous to judge, I am sadly running out of material) Art is never complete. Live in the moment. Enjoy this, a snapshot of the band at their happiest, new songs gushing in full flow. Lee TEACHING his band, omg, "to get right back down to that is right, la...." This, my friends, is the second record, or near enough. I offer you Zen; I offer you these moments; I offer you this magic. record noun /ˈrɛkɔːd/ 1. a thing constituting a piece of evidence about the past, especially an account kept in writing or some other permanent form. Hi Tone, Just wondering, to your knowledge were there ever any formal attempts to record the fabled second album? If so, What year and studio? And what songs were recorded or were intended to be recorded? (Besides the obvious ones like 'Fishing Net' and 'I Am The Key'). Any information would be appreciated!
@tonyg8096
@tonyg8096 4 года назад
The only thing I know is Lee played Fishing Net to Steve Lillywhite (or probably more accurately: Lee played it when he was doing the album that got released and Lillywhite witnessed it) who wanted to record it, and Lee said "no it's for the second album" I have zero proof but think the Crescent tape is almost the 2nd album running order, except I can't see it starting with Tears in the Rain. Who knows la Though Lee on his own I think never stopped recording. Mr Macefield heard a Lee's Studio version of She Came Down.
@aidanhickey9845
@aidanhickey9845 4 года назад
@@tonyg8096 A studio version of 'She Came Down'!? Jesus I'd like to hear that! A shame we most likely never will. You may be right in saying that the second album would've been basically the crescent tape order, I'd never thought of that. But, again. I suppose we'll never know. I know that Lee had a different order for the 'Callin' All' LP. Do we have any idea what that was? I've often wondered about it. I assumed it was just roughly the order the songs were usually performed live. (In that case 'Son Of A Gun' into 'Freedom Song' into 'Clean Prophet' could've been the first three songs. A great opening in my opinion!) Finally, it's almost a right of passage for every La's fan to create their own tracklisting for the second album. So here's mine. (Subject to change). Tracklist: Side A 1. Ladies And Gentlemen 2. It's Not Impossible 3. She Came Down 4. Make A Chain 5. Raindance 6. Fishing Net Side B 7. Alright 8. Tears In The Rain 9. Rebound 10. Our Time 11. When Will I See You Again? 12. I Am The Key All songs written by L.A Mavers Except track 4 by Peter 'Cammy' Cammell And track 7 by John Power

@aidanhickey9845
@aidanhickey9845 4 года назад
@@tonyg8096 Ah, so we do know the order of the 'Callin' All' LP! Awesome! If I may ask where did you find out this tracklisting? I've given the ordering a quick run through in my head, and I can totally hear it working. Some things I find interesting: It goes 'Doledrum' into 'There She Goes' instead of the otherway around. The record label kept 'Failure' and 'Looking Glass' together. Assuming the record is 9 songs per side, 'Timeless Melody' closes side A and 'I.O.U' opens side B. Finally, WHO KNOWS CLOSING THE RECORD!? I'm not so sure about that! I feel that the outro of 'Looking Glass' is the perfect way to end it off. With all the callbacks to the previous songs on the album. I remember hearing that for the first time and being blown away by it! I had never heard a song do that before! Even if that ending was a completely Lillywhite studio creation with no input from the band, I still think it's brilliant! But, then again. It's almost like you would expect 'Looking Glass' to be the last song because it sounds like a 'closing' track, and not ending with it would be breaking the rules a bit. Which is actually brilliant when you think about it! I'm starting to talk myself into 'Who Knows?' Closing the record now! Yeah, now that I think about it. I can totally hear 'Looking Glass' fading out and 'Who Knows?' playing over top of it, and I definitely could imagine it resonating on an emotional front, Going from the big epic cinematic 'closing' track filled with questions and existential longing, to the simple outro, the lonesome coda. The Answer. "Who Knows what tomorrow knows? Who Knows what the future holds? Who Knows? Who Knows?" Take care of yourself Tone, I'm sure you've heard this before. But, you're the closest thing to Mavers that we've got. All the best La.
