Absolutely perfect. That bass line and Maver's voice is chilling. I will love this band for as long as I live.

John Leckie produced their first album and said that Lee played him a song called “Fishing net”...(which evolved into “Was it something I said”......) ....he said it was one of the best tunes he had ever heard and wanted to record it but nope Mavers said it was for the fabled 2nd album........if only ......
@galetinm
@galetinm 4 года назад
In a Consequence of Sound article it is said that it was Steve Lillywhite who said that. "While working with the La’s in London, Lillywhite remembered Mavers playing a song he wrote called “Fishing Net” that Lillywhite described as one of the best he ever heard. When he asked Mavers if they could record it, Mavers replied “No, that’s for the second album.”

no ones done it better than Mavers, before or since. Jake Bugg will be striving his entire life to write a tune as good as this
@Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55
@Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55 8 лет назад
+William Harris And the fact Jake Bugg doesn't write his own songs alone, he has about 2 or 3 writers with him. I was asked to do some work on his debut album a few years ago but had to decline as i was with my family when my old man was dying. Mavers is the real deal, pure talent. Bugg is not.

Same with Robbie Williams and those little cunts in One Direction. They get credited as songwriters just for standing over the REAL songwriter and saying "Yeah, that's really good I like that".

It's so frustrating to hear these incredible bootlegs and wonder what might've been, but then again hearing these tunes on a rough recording is somewhat closer to The La's ethic. It's a catch-22.

Really has the sound of the sea about it. The rhythm as someone in another thread wisely mentioned is like an Italian Tarantella I went and listened to some Italian Tarantellas and there is definitely influences in 'Fishing Net' Lee never made it a secret that he listened and took influence from many genre's of music. Fishing Net is fabulous 😊

To the comments about the riff at the end: it is the start of Doledrum, another song on their setlist. The song itself is one of the best I have heard, easily one of my favourites m, the bassline is absolutely bouncing all the way through, the lyrics are great as per, Mavers' voice sounds class, and then the lead guitar comes on strong after the final verse to combine with the bass and Mavers' rhythm guitar, it is supreme.
