its a travesty that the La's weren't one of the biggest bands in the world. No matter how much Lee hates it, their album is timeless and over 20 years later its still fresh and alive.
Part of me is quite happy with them being "my band", there's a buzz from meeting fellow La's fans that you wouldn't get with hipster-adopted, mainstream stuff that people like because they're told to. It's clear Lee wasn't arsed about recognition / fame (he even says this literally in interviews). It only makes sense the fans of his music feel the same. Robbie Williams covering There She Goes at his gigs is not something I think about when I'm enjoying The La's :D
I presume this is the performance Clapton saw on TV back then - 'I’m very out of step at the moment. The only thing I’ve really liked is a guy called Lee Mavers, who sings with the La’s. He’s got a stance and a style that I think is tremendous. I saw them do a thing on TV with him and an acoustic guitar and the bass player with an acoustic bass, and they did that song “There She Goes,” and it was so strong. I think that’s what it’s about for me...the craft.'
@@francesclarke6808 He's still strumming consistently while plucking the highest two strings AND knocking on the guitar percussively while singing. What he's doing is a lot harder than the lead guitar part
The La's are the lost jewel in the crown of British Rock music. (I know that sounds pretentias but how else can you describe the sheer excellence of this amazing band.?)
short and sweet, it's what I love about the album, hardly any songs over 3 minutes but all packed with greatness and leave you longing for more. it's one of only a hand full of albums I can listen to over and over! so sad there was never a second and although I love cast but for me they were never quite as good, there is an energy about that album that is hard to beat..
Yes, the songs got straight to the point... except for "Looking Glass". But I _love_ LG as an album closer, both thematically and musically. Can't imagine a better way to end an album that is as close to perfection as anything I've ever heard.
The greatest bands are often the seminal ones who break the ground for the others with their creative genius. This band were pure creative genius sadly cut short. I wish I had known then what I know now1
They made one cd/album that I am aware of. I bought it new years ago. I don't 'really' lend this cd out... it's been my experience that when loaned out... it doesn't come back!! It's THAT good!
I’m only 31 so wasn’t born when the La’s were releasing stuff/playing live in their pomp but have become a huge fan and I feel robbed stuff like this wasn’t properly released. Mavers is a genius and owes it to the world to studio record what he wrote and release it!
Great to hear you're a fan. I loved them as soon as i saw them playing live back in 1988 supporting another band. I was 16. Saw them loads too. So glad i was alive then! Saw all the best bands. Mavers is a musical genius. Just having a bit of a reminisce tonight. Sarah.
@@menlove251 You’re lucky to have seen them live, I’d pay a stupid sum of money to see them live in their prime. I’d heard There She Goes (obviously) so many times and presumed they were just a one hit wonder… I think I heard someone describe the album as one of the best ever so gave it a listen… I reckon I listened to the whole thing 5 times in a row with my jaw wide open 😂
How fucking good were the La’s? I am watching this vid with my 1 year old daughter and she is clapping, She knows they were quality. This is what daddy was into when he was 20.....
@@tomsutton6586 ah thx. i see the timeline lineup in wiki now. thought drummer might have been Neil - had a similar sort of style / feel. seems that Chris drummer guy was pretty good, went on to be in many famous bands ! but Lee, what an amazing talent. unfulfilled greatness tho ! sad in many ways
Very nice performance. Interesting how I can hear the influence of so many bands of the 60's British invasion, yet very much their own genuine sound. I can hear The Kinks, The Who, Herman's Hermits. Certainly Mavers' vocals, look, and mannerisms resemble a young Mick Jagger in an uncanny way. Really nice sound.
I come from the time of the Beatles, and I immediately thought of them when I played this album back in the day. The quality and variety of the songs is up there with the great ones..
Been revisiting the la's after a long time away and I can't tell you how much I love this album. Seeing it in a new light and it glows beautifully....Mavers is a genius and Power is understated magic. Class act.
You see why the Call the 1960's the Center of the UNIVERSE!!! It's the Bridge between the Past and the Future..Even in MUSIC!!! All Hail the La's for keeping that Essence and Influence on there Sleeve.
Michael Graham What in a universe where Lee actually kept is head screwed on for more than one album and Noel wasn’t a grafter? Yeah that’s a hard world to imagine.
what a joke they have some genius songs but the smiths joy division and a lot of other bands are better then them its hard to judge the la's they have 1 genius album compared to other bands
i love the smiths and joy division, too. However they didn't have the range of Maver's. He was practically a one man band. How good would the La's have been with a Johhny Marr on guitar? John Power has talent, but he didn't come into his own until he stared Cast.
Saw them live in Nottingham the night Thatcher resigned - quite a night, but it was still only a 40-minute gig, even with an encore of There She Goes and one or two others!
Perhaps the best recording of There She Goes. Oh my goodness. Thank God the audio quality of this is better than the video. Is there another version of this clip out there?
