The Lacking Action of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has instead acted as a sequel to the Steve Rogers era whilst also being its own beast... However, there was one thing about the show that struck me as really inconsistent and its especially glaring when thinking about the context of the previous movies. The action in the show started off strong, and across the board the same level of top notch choreography and stuntwork was present. But I think the framing and editing of a lot of these sequences rob them of their impact and the finesse that we’ve grown accustomed to.

the worst thing this show did was how it completely breezed through Bucky's confession to killing his friend's son. A scene which should have shaped Bucky going forward. It's like Bucky himself directed that scene.

I think that was a choice from the DP and Cinematography team to use close-up camera angles to make you feel as uncomfortable and in your face as a visual storytelling tool. @@FULANODETAL yeah it definitely isn't stable in certain scenes where I would just appreciate more angles, or lock it off on a tripod. Like you said, the shaky cam is in scenes that it is reaching for artistic expression i.e. zemo and the candies/ Sam's speech. When a camera is handheld, the shakiness is supposed to make the viewer feel uneasy/unsettled or like it's a POV in regard to visual storytelling techniques so I kind of see what they were trying to do but it can also ruin the immersion once you pick up on it or if it is distracting

I feel like a huge problem with Marvel's hand to hand combat is that the editors don't really seem to trust the actors choreography. If you look at the BTS of any movie or show, you'll see that the actors seem more than capable of pulling these stunts but once we go to the editing, its all chopped and shaky almost like they want to add a sense of uneasiness but the truth is that's not really the case. Movies like John Wick and even some DC films have proved that long action takes are not only possible, but far more enjoyable than shaky cam and quick edits.

I think part of the problem is how harsh people can be when nitpicking movies. Look at the throne room fight from The Last Jedi, which was almost entirely performed by Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver themselves, who put in a TON of work. But because there were a handful of little errors, people proclaimed it the worst thing ever and still harp on it. But if you do the Taken/Bourne shakycam thing, then no one can claim continuity errors because there is basically no continuity. (*taps forehead*)

@@jasonblalock4429 i didn't think about this. But honestly i completely understand it from their point of view but still the praise they get from those scenes as well is the people who will pay them more for that and for longer than the other ones who will nitpick it. @@jasonblalock4429 harsh... nitpicking... that scene simply doesn't work. You might not see it that way, but I've always enjoyed good, clear action scenes so watching it wasn't really enjoyable for me. I've seen how many times they should have died and didn't and it was annoying. The build up is great, then the action starts and there is just 6 guys doing some fancy dancing . Later, it splits the characters and it actually watchable, because you can do the "oh, that guy did this, but she did that, so this happened". You just cannot do it with the first action scene. Like at all. And the problem is that it was supposed to be the "money shot of the whole scene".

I can't help but feel that the russos get way too much credit for their action sequences. Undoubtedly they play a huge part yes. But generally fight scenes are shot by the first AD. Watch the LOTR extended cut director's commentary, jackson is always giving his 1st and 2nd AD's shout outs on great action sequences that they directed. The final duel between aragorn and the archer orc in FOTR was shot by either the 1st or 2nd AD while jackson was shooting something else.

Bucky isn’t the winter soldier in this show. He’s not operating by the same rules or the same creed. Besides, this series features “The Falcon” as the first name in the title. Most of the show should have been about Sam’s transition into Captain America. Bucky will most likely get some sort of focus in the coming fourth installment in the Captain America series. For me, the worst aspect of the show by far was Karli. It really rubbed me the wrong way the way she was portrayed as this “fallen angel” with big puppy dog eyes and they still had her steal from the poor to feed the poor. Like, she genuinely believes it’s people’s own fault for dying, that it was ever okay to threaten Sam’s sister and nephews. I think they wanted to have her be like Killmonger but the difference was Black Panther never made excuses for his villainy, they dissected it. I actively rooted for the flag smashers to be stopped in the same way I wanted Aim or Hydra stopped, and I feel no shame whatsoever in referring to her as a terrorist. If the mask fits.....

i agree that the worst and most lazy aspect of the show was karli, though i have completely different reasons for why. in my opinion, they failed at making karli and the flag smashers actually compelling characters, to the point where i, an anarchist who was very on board with karli's ideas at first and excited to see how they'd deconstruct her ideology, was so sick of her by episode 5 that i was just waiting for her pretty-obviously-going-to-happen death. if i wanted to watch yet another villain with no nuance, whose actions are driven solely by what the plot needs in order for it to be a nicely wrapped up package for the audience, and who is the paragon of the tired cliche, 'has the right idea, but the wrong methods', then i would just pirate any other generic action movie instead of paying for disney plus to watch this otherwise fun show. there's this meme going around that marvel's next villain is going to be a guy called killworker who proclaims that all labourers must unite to rise against their oppressors, which he says as he slits a child's throat. reflecting on the way the mcu treats all of their antagonists who aren't disney villain level evil, i honestly would not be surprised if this actually happened.

Exactly. An experienced fighter will usually beat a stronger rookie. Experience counts for a great deal. Especially since Bucky was cryogenically frozen, so is still in his prime. It's not like he's slowing due to age. Karli is only what? Early twenties? She got a little experience as a brusier working as an enforcer for the Power Broker, but that doesn't compare to the extensive and brutal training HYDRA put Bucky through, plus his years of experience as an assassin and fighter.
@Pro_Butcher_Amateur_Human

An addendum about Bucky's experience though - he's had the serum for decades, but once he was trained, he was kept cryogenically frozen until he was needed. He was brought out for the really important, this-cannot-fail missions. He doesn't have decades of experience, despite having the serum for decades. Still should have won though. Karli isn't old enough to legally drink in the US, while Bucky was fighting a pitched battle against aliens a few months ago (from his perspective). Bucky has fought supersoldiers, demigods, aliens and monsters. Karli has fought 'the system'. Not really comparable levels of experience.

the mcu does that all the time, if you actually look at power levels throughout the mcu, they are rarely consistent, characters get nerfed and buffed all the time depending on the film and its especially a problem now that a few characters are very overpowered. However its a good thing marvel didnt use the comic power levels cause characters like hulk, thor, drax, gamora, spiderman etc would be far stronger than they are in the films.
@Tsukasa2727
@Tsukasa2727 3 года назад
@@luke5930 I'm fine with fluctuating power levels, the problem is that they often make the nerfed character look completely incompetent against a new foe or compared to a new character. There are ways for our heroes to lose while still maintaining a sense of power and skill but that is difficult to do. So instead we get frustrating scenes like the truck one I mentioned where Bucky looks like a buffoon.
@luke5930
@luke5930 3 года назад
@@Tsukasa2727 that's the issue though with these movies, if Bucky fought someone who was also overpowered, it would make sense for him to lose but for the sake of the show, he had to lose against people he shouldn't lose against but then when you make villains overpowered, normal powered heroes become useless. Its just a big problem with comics in general, the only time it ever really works is when the hero and villain are either both overpowered or are both just normal humans. The MCU will continue to suffer from this, the characters are becoming a lot stronger now and some of them are insanely strong and there aren't really any villains that can beat them but you have to make the hero struggle somehow

It seems another problem is the over-reliance on "Super Soldiers". It meant something that Cap & Winter Soldier were the only ones. Even with their in-common enhanced abilities, they had enough diversity in how they fought that it made the action interesting. When EVERYONE'S (sans Falcon & The Dora Milaje) a super solider, unless you're doing the legwork to diversify in terms of fighting style and tactics everything blends together. Not to mention, also needing the right blocking and camera flow and editing to match as well.

The reason Sam doesn't have the serum, and shouldn't, is his speech at the end of the show. He is in every way not the image of Cpt America; he isn't white, doesn't have blonde hair or blue eyes, and possibly most importantly, doesn't have the super serum. The whole point of him taking up the mantle is the idea that _anyone_ can be Cpt America, and it isn't restricted to what "America" wants it to be. If he had the serum, it would be easy for people to accept him as Cap in spite of his race with the idea of "Well, he's a super soldier. Cap's gotta be a super soldier, and we don't got many other candidates so I _guess_ he can be Cap". Additionally, if Sam had both the tech route in addition to the super soldier route, you'd basically be diminishing him by saying Sam needs tech in addition to the other stuff Steve had to be Cap.

I really wish episode 6 would've had the same level of quality as those previously mentioned scenes, specially because it was the climax of the show. I think that there is an answer to why the show slowly declined in quality of action has to go directly to the pandemic, in the BTS the pandemic hit right at the first okay action scene, then they only get worst from there, I feel that they had the first half of the series including the training montage filmed before the pandemic, where they could spend multiple days on it, and then the second half of the series and the truck fight during the pandemic where they didn’t get as many days as they wanted on it

Even though this is TV, there’s no excuse for action as poorly shot and edited as this. Each episode had a budget of $25 million and had 1 or 2 action sequences. John Wick bad a budget of about $20 million for an entire film and it had way more action.

More action isn't neccessarily the answer, I'd be happy if the show had 3 fight scenes in total if they were as good as John Wick's, or the Daredevil Netflix show. Quality over quantity. It's the rare gem like John Wick which has quantity of quality.

@@Pro_Butcher_Amateur_Human I said it had more action to illustrate the point that it did more with less money. FatWS shouldn’t have had more action. The action it did have should’ve been better. Here is my take on sam not taking the serum. I like the fact that he self-made himself. He was the one who grew stronger by working hard and not giving up. Also, he is used to not having that (lack of a better term) drug. The serum acts like steroids. It was one thing for steve to have it when they were testing it. It is another for others to use it. Also, he saw what it did to bucky? Who wants to have the added brainwashing along with the serum affecting your body. He saw what being a hired asassian did to Bucky and sam did not want to go down that path. Also, what I enjoyed is there can only be one captain America (bear with me here) just like there can only be one tony, one iron man. Sam os creating his own identity while fulfilling the legacy steve wanted for him. Taking the serum will affect that. Last thing, this why John Walker’s story is told. He copied steve down to the letter, but loved he can never be what steve was including taking the serum. I get that everyone is different and the serum acts like jim’s carey’s the mask depending on who takes it, but still, I like that sam’s first instinct was to not go down that route.

I feel that in terms of quality, (the CGI and effects) the series was _DEFINITELY_ film quality. But sadly that aerial battle in the first episode was probably the most involved and detailed fight that we ended up getting. I guess they blew the majority of their budget on that fight alone, because none of the other fights in the series ever quite lived up to that opening scene. I do agree that, as the series wore on, the action scenes dwindled and eventually became shorter and less detailed. Ultimately I was disappointed in the way the series played out. I liked the ending of _The Falcon and the Winter Soldier_ WAY more than the ending we got for _WandaVision,_ but although the series started out strong, I ultimately felt it ended on a weaker note. ...though I still enjoyed watching. And they _definitely_ nerfed Bucky. He didn't even really feel like a super soldier in this series. He was basically just Some Guy™ who happened to have Bucky's face. And arm. And I gotta say... I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt "some kind of way" regarding Lamar in the stereotypic "Black bestie" role. Another RU-vid channel, _(Double Toasted)_ said it best when they described Lamar (only half-jokingly) as John Walker's _"pet negro"._ As a Black female, during viewings I couldn't articulate exactly WHAT bothered me about Lamar, but they said it best; it felt like Lamar existed SOLELY as a means to further John's character development. It especially bothered me when in an interview, Spellman (I think it was him) defended his decision to use the Lamar character in such a way, defiantly declaring that they (the writers) had "earned" the right to kll him since they played up Sam's character and "dutifully" spoke on race. I cannot describe the anger and hurt I felt upon reading that interview. It felt disingenuous and fake, hearing this writer casually ADMIT to PURPOSEFULLY creating a character arc with this specific goal in mind, having actually convinced himself that he was vindicated. As usual @ *Full Fat Videos* you have outdone yourselves with this video essay. I agree with your general thesis, but I think the title of the video is a bit inaccurate. It's not that the show 'lacks' action...it just wasn't up to the cinematography and editing of the movies. "Lack" implies to me that there wasn't enough quantity.
