As a kid, I saw and enjoyed the creepiness of the show before I read any King books, and it later contributed to me wanting to pick up King's books. The Stand tv miniseries as well. I still love that and rewatch it occasionally. It is way better than the new remake. The Langoliers was tough to rewatch as an adult, mainly because I felt like it was too long and dragged a lot more than I remembered, but I still love it.
Just read this and man, I loved it! The characters were so likable and it was refreshing seeing them work together rather than fracture as they did in the Mist. Great review!
The Langoliers is the cream of the crop here. His ability to make so many characters interesting and/or likeable with individual personalities, in a novella no less, really shines through.
Good one Mike, I actually never read Langoliers, only library policeman and Sun Dog. But that was years and years ago, and I gotta get this book and try again
“80% of the passengers are gone” That would imply that there was only 50 passengers, and 40 of them are dead. A plane big enough to have a middle row, and a full flight, it was well more than 50 passengers, probably close to 200 . . .
I was looking for these books, especially The Langoliers..it's good to know they've all been put together in a type of anthology. Have lots of reading to do :)
I loved the miniseries as a kid. I go back and rewatch it everyone now and then and still enjoy it. I agree with you, not as bad as everyone keeps making it out to be, especially for a TV miniseries from the 90’s.
Love the King! Four Past Midnight was my first collection of his short stories I read. I can’t remember the name but I also love the one with the biplane vampire. Tremendous.
This was the first Stephen King I ever read, was left in a holiday cottage we stayed in when I was about 14, still love it. And I also quite liked the series, thought it was cast well and the script was good
Loved the story in written form and made for TV mini series. Despite the crappy early CGI towards the end, the performances and casting was solid. This one would’ve really felt at home with a Rod Serling narration. Wouldn’t be surprised if King used twilight zone as inspiration for some of it. Edit: Ah wrote this before I listened to the video so you mirrored my sentiments almost exactly.
Bought the book while stuck on Heathrow. Way to go. Actually, I only ever read the Langoliers, I don't know why I didn't continue. But that story stuck with me. Two way traffic ahead....
I watched a Netflix series a few months back called 'Into the Night', about people in an airplane trying to outrun the rising sun, due to radiation killing people. It seems like a ripoff of this story.
I recommend you to read anything junji ito, junji ito is the stephen king of manga, stuff like hell star remina, gyu and uzumaki, he is the best of the best in horror you will love the horror in it, one of the best horror artist out there edit: forgot some stuff like that there is alot of body horror and stuff like that. but you will love junji ito's manga the best horror artist, and most of his manga are not long, like uzumaki is a short 24 chapters, most of his work is oneshots
If anyone sees this, this is my first Stephen king book and I LOVED it. What King books should I read after this? I really like the psychological horror and mystery parts of this book.
@@fiona_137_mullicancheck out nightmares & dreamscapes, skeleton crew, and night shift, their short story collections with all sorts of stuff. If ya wanna get into his actual novels then start where it began with carrie, salems lot, and the shining. I also recommend the book different seasons, thats the book that has 3 out of the four stories that were adapted into films (shawshank, stand by me, apt pupil)
I remember watching the movie some years ago. Yes, the effects are really bad. But aside from that, two things called my attention. One, that it was so long for a simple story, but now I undertand that it is the type of series divided in two parts. And two, that I felt that story was a really great story, it was kind of sad and a bit of loneliness, and also creepy. I think it was a really great movie and an amazing story, (yes, the special effects were ugly)
The Langeliers is the only one in this collection that I have read. The movie is really bad and cheesy, but the story is much better. The story was original and the concept very good. The characters were pretty good as well. The only thing I didn’t like about this story was the Langeliers themselves. I like what they “do” But there was so much dread built up for that to be what they look like and how they operate seemed very silly and anticlimactic to me. Other than that a very good story
Hey Mike Stephen King is a great writer the greatest horror writer of all time. I'm not crazy about his politics. He is kind of a wacko. If he thinks Susan Collins is a crazy right winger than he must live in one of his distance worlds.
I don't agree with his political views at all. I don't know if you have ever read his Twitter feed? I had to steer clear of it which is a bummer. I have to shut out the political musings of my heroes or I'd have none at all. I also didn't know he thought SC is a right-winger. Yikes.
