#linux #laptop #review
It is undeniably a beautiful laptop. It's 35 centimeters in length, 24 in depth, and it's 2cm thick at its highest point, and it's really light, at 1.5 kilos only.
The chassis is magnesium and not aluminium: it's not as solid, but it's also super light, and in my experience, it's very durable.
The hinge is very sturdy, and doesn't wobble at all when you're typing, and you can open it with one finger. Solidity wise, it feels very well built. It doesn't creak, it doesn't bend, and the deck flex is limited to a minimum.
You can open it up by removing the bottom panel with a few standard screws, and upgrade the RAM and the storage.
The Executive 16 has only one CPU option, the core i7, 12 700H. It's a 14 core, 20 threads, 12th gen intel CPU. Coupled with that is an 82 Wh battery, and an Nvidia RTX 3050Ti dedicated GPU.
Now, the only choices you can make is the ram, from 16Gb to 64, the storage, from one 500GB SSD to 2 modules of 2 terabytes, if you want these in RAID, and the keyboard layout.
By default, you'll get 16 Gigs of RAM, and 500GB of SSD, but my review unit came with 64GB of RAM, and 1TB of SSD.
Now, for the I/O, on the left, you have a USB C port, it's 3.2 Gen 2, supports displayport 1.4, and can charge the laptop. We also have a USB A 3.2 Gen 1, a full size SD Card slot, and a headphone ad mic combo jack. On the right, we have a DC barrel charger, an HDMI 2.0 port, another USB A port, 3.2 Gen 1, and a THunderbolt 4 port, which also supports charging, of course.
The Executive 16 also has WIfi 6, from Intel, and Bluetooth 5.1.
It's 16 inch, it's a 16:10 aspect ratio, which I know some of you love, it's 90hz refresh rate, and it's 2560 by 1600, so what they call 3K, but it's basically 1440p, but a bit taller to work with the aspect ratio.
It's 400 nits, and it has an anti glare coating, contrast ratio is 1500:1.
Bezels are minimal, which I like.
On top of the display, you have 2 webcams. The first one is an infrared, that lets you unlock your computer with your face, the second webcam is a regular 1080p one, and it's decent.
It's joined by a mic that can only be qualified as decent, IF you lower the gain a lot.
THe speakers, on the other hand, are pretty good.
On to the keyboard, then. This thing has a numpad. The keyboard here is large, well spaced, which means mistypes are very unlikely to happen. It's decently clicky, with a sound that I find quite pleasing.
The keys don't have much key travel though, think pre-butterfly keyboard macbooks. The press does feel pretty good though, quite bouncy, not too hard at the end of the key press, you don't feel like you're typing on a hard surface or on glass.
The touchpad is glass, super smooth, and it's the biggest touchpad I've ever seen. Seriously, it's the size of the screen of my Steam Deck. It's very precise and the click sound is really soft and nice, it feels solid.
The i7 12700H is a beast, there's no 2 ways about it. With a single core score of 1860 and multi core of 10858, in geekbench 5, it's comparable to my desktop ryzen 5 5800H.
As per the battery life, running youtube videos in a loop netted me 4h and 30 minutes, and using it in a more real life scenario, it lasted for 7 hours, in hybrid graphics mode. And if you go into intel only, and get the refresh rate down to 60hz, you can gain an extra hour and a half.

A sticker to point out the machine is user programmable. The sticker for the stickers should have a quarter size sticker on it, with a recursive stack of ever smaller quarter sized stickers, all announcing the recursive stickers. Another sticker should make the customer aware of the EXTREME SUPER GLUE that ensures the magnesium would be entirely ripped off the machine should anyone try to remove any them. A sticker to remind the owner there is actually a laptop hidden under all the stickers.

And then the price! Oh my at €1550 it's basically among the best value out there.

Thank you for this kind of detailed review. I've been using a lot of laptops in the past year from several different manufacturers, and I have to say - it is *really* hard to find one that has the combination of a good chassis, good keyboard, high quality matte screen (way too many with ~60%-70% sRGB), decent noise levels, and a reasonable price. My go-to productivity laptop, the Dell XPS series, has been a major let down in the past 1-2 years. Terrible quality control with LCD light bleed of a totally unacceptable degree for their price point (which Dell is either unwilling or unable to fix properly) defective touchpads, and noisy fans. You really go into the most useful details in your reviews, and recognize shortcomings appropriately. Good job, and thank you.
@lejoshmont2093
@lejoshmont2093 Год назад
I got the business version(precision) of the 17in for linux support and I haven't had any issues with back light bleed and the touch pad is pretty darn good. Over all I am really happy with it and the build quality. Coming from a mac book it is just as solid or more. I would say it is a high bar to meet in terms of build quality and over all. It checked the most of my boxes for what I was looking for in a new laptop and it has exceeded my expectations.

Good video, as always! That laptop looks fantastic and I hope that in the future I buy some Slimbook laptop (smaller because I need a more compact for portability) that can replace my HP from 2019 because it feels some limitations hardware-wise. I've seen the part about the keyboard layout and, as a some keyboards freak and spanish/catalan keyboard user, I recommend you, if you want by curiosity, to try the spanish (Spain) keyboard because it's a good alternative to the AZERTY and it can cover easily many languages such as spanish, catalan, french or portugese For the æ and the œ it just need to type Alt Gr + a/o (in Linux), and the caret or the accents you have an specific dead key for that

Oh man, I think I feel a little buyer's remorse as well. I just bought the RedmiBook 15 Pro (2022) for around 1200 euros and it has an i7-12650H (which is almost as good as i7-12700H (?)), RTX 2050 (which has around half the G3D mark rating as RTX 3050 Ti). Then both laptops have most of the things I want: 2k+ resolution, TB4 connection for possible gaming using an eGPU, keyboard with full size arrow keys and home/end keys, decent dedicated GPU, 15" form factor, lightweight, and good build quality. The only things that was missing from RedmiBook, that I wanted, but this laptop has are: upgradeable RAM (Redmi has 16GB soldered), and two M.2 slots (Redmi only has 1). Then Slimbook also beats RedmiBook by having: 1 more USB A port, 10WHr more battery capacity, 1080p webcam (Redmi has 720p), 1 more native video output (Redmi has HDMI 2.0 and TB4 but the extra USB C port doesn't support display out), and TUX key instead of Windows key ;) But I think I'm still happy with my purchase because I think the lack of features compared to the Slimbook is justified by the price difference. But now I'll definitely keep my eye on the future iterations of this laptop (maybe in 4-5+ years). Thanks for the review!

Thank you for your review. I want to purchase a Linux-designed laptop for my next purchase. I have been using Linux for about 3 and a half years as my daily driver and want to support a Linux computer supplier. Yes, I know and understand that I will be paying a premium. However, I used Apple Macs for years and never complained about paying upward of $2,000+ for several on my Macs. Therefore, I have made peace with spending approximately $1,500 - $1,800 for my next Linux laptop. Thanks again, and God bless,

This would have been the laptop I'd have purchased if only it was also convertible with stylus. I ended up getting an Asus ROG Flow x13, so now begins the effort of making it work well with Linux. So far I haven't found any Linux laptops with both a dedicated GPU and convertible form factor + stylus.

Just got my new Executive 14 last week. It's almost the perfect laptop, screen wobbles way too much but that's all. The stickers were gone after not even 5mins. Even though I really don't understand why they slap so many on there.. One thing I don't understand: the BIOS almost has no options, and I have no idea were to find updates for that?

Finally a laptop with real arrow keys again that isn't a crappy "gaming laptop" The only thing I wish it had would be a 360 degree hinge and backlit keyboard. Then I could finally retire my 2015 Lenovo Yoga 3 1470 with an Nvidia 940M gpu.

So glad they made the ram and hd upgradable. Would recommend that USA buyers buy the base model and upgrade themselves. You can often get the ram and SSD for less than the company charges on their sites.

Linux laptops shipping nvidia is something I'll never understand or get behind, even if you just run xorg, shit WILL break and you'll have to deal with extreme jank, and good luck trying wayland with xwayland introducing insane sync issues when using nvidia, when it even works at all that is. I understand that if you switch to Linux, Nvidia might be what you already owned and it makes no sense to switch but why anyone running Linux would voluntarily sign up for this hell and pay a premium on top of it goes beyond me.

@@ppolo12 myself i don't tend to need it on the fly in a laptop, it's best to just use a stationary pc for anything serious unless the laptop is one's only computer and they don't wanna use cloud computing, then i guess for that very, very, very limited number of people, easily less than 1% of the market, it makes sense to have nvidia in a linux laptop

Great video, Merci! It is really funny how Apple hardware is a used comparison point by people from the Linux world. I get it that it is very good quality (usually) and so popular most the people tried it at least once, but still, keeping referring to Apple is not a good idea. Even Microsoft struggles to produce hardware that can compete in quality with Apple. So it is mission impossible for slimbook to produce as good as them. In my opinion, it doesn't serve them. It should be compared to Asus, Acer, and Dell, ... people doing a much smaller amount of each series than Apple, which has very little hardware choice in comparison. And Slimbook is doing at least as good as them, if not better!

What it takes to get to apples level is the willingness to put years into a product of R&D and then never ship it. for every product apple release they will have many internal projects that are multiple years of dev behind them that never ship. Your write that means smaller OEMs are going to struggle to do this as they just cant afford to have the majority of thier staff working on projects that will not ship.

Hey Nick, didn't you buy a Dev one? I might be interested if you wanted to solve this dilemma. I have what alludes to an x360 version but I would love to get my hands on an actual Dev one.
@GarrisIiari
@GarrisIiari Год назад
Kind of apples and oranges in comparison, but actually the Dev one actually doesn't have as good a battery life as this model, and also has a 16:9 vs this model's 16:10 display (I consider that a downside for the Dev one).
@PearComputingDevices
@PearComputingDevices Год назад
@@GarrisIiari This is true, it's architecture goes back to the Envy and Elitebook, with being very similar to Elitebook 800 series body and Envy internals. Anything but Intel in corporate has been a very slow climb after all and yes the battery life of the Dev one is less then spectacular, but out of box linux distros have never been fantastic. It takes tweaking for sure. The screen whule useful especially since it's probably corporate oriented is decent but a 9:10 would have been a cherry topper. The corporate world is much slower to adopt new ideas and formats. Think about how long it took x360 devices to be accepted? It's definitely not a big selling point yet either. That world turns and adopts very slowly

Is the RAID option a hardware RAID? or are the 60€ just for the setup? I get that Ubuntu (I only checked that one) doesn't really offer a (gui) install with RAID, but I'll most likely install my favorite distro from scratch (no, not LFS, but a fresh install) so I'd have to initiate the RAID by myself anyway. Upon looking at the install options I noticed that you can choose RAID and "no OS", which doesn't really make sense to me (as in: it has to be a hardware RAID then, otherwise this isn't possible (or viable, as you can easily erase all partitions and just use the whole disk)).

I don't understand why people like notebooks with dedicated GPUs. I bought an XPS 15 a few years ago with an i5 11300H and a GTX 1050. Just the "H" CPU has a big TDP and thermal throttles a lot; but when the GPU kicks in, holy moly, it micro-freezes all the time and the performance is bad! I just want a laptop with integrated GPU, higher resolution than 1080p@60Hz, and a bit bigger than 15.6" :( For now my best candidate is the new Tuxedo Pulse 15 Gen2 because even though it has an high TDP CPU, it has a beefier cooling than my XPS despite having no dedicated GPU!
