The Tokyo part is all over the place. The population of 37 mil is for the Greater Tokyo Metropolitan area which covers 13,500 sq km which isn’t all shown on the map. It’s a bit confusing at first because administratively Tokyo Metropolis (2,194 sq km/pop 13 mil) is treated as prefecture with a governor and subdivided into about 50 wards, cities, and towns with mayors. But at the same time, Tokyo is the capital city of Japan. The core of Tokyo Metropolis is the eastern part consisting of the 23 wards which have almost 10 million people total and are treated as individual cities. That’s the part most people think of as Tokyo. Should have kept it consistent using either the city proper or it’s entire metro area.

Here in Brazil, there is a city called "Altamira" in the state of "Pará" with 160.000 square km, it's bigger than netherlands, belgium and switzerland together, but there's a few people living there

It's interesting to see cities by their land area as supposed to their population. The largest American city by land area is Sitka, Alaska on Baranof Island with a total land area of 12,471 square kilometres (around the same size as Northern Ireland). Most of the land is covered in mountains and the part where people actually live is more like a town than a city, but someone decided "hey, this small town and these mountains? Yeah, it's a city now". It's even crazier in China, Jiuquan is a "prefecture-level" city, and even though the urban area is quite small by Chinese standards, the whole area is larger than Greece. It just shows you how arbitrary city boundaries are.

As small as Vatican City is, they still have a railway! The railway opened in 1934 and is only 300 meters (980 ft) long, making it the world's shortest national railway. It has access to Italy's network via a viaduct to San Pietro station which has been guaranteed since the Lateran Treaty was signed. Since 2015, the public can take a train from the Vatican to Castel Gandolfo (home of a palace that's the papal summer residence) every Saturday morning during the Summer (but was briefly paused during the pandemic).

The delhi one is actually a region called the NCR ( national capital region ) consisting of delhi and several smaller cities/towns like gurgaon, faridabad , ghaziabad , noida . Its made up of National capital territory ( NCT of Delhi ) and some parts of Haryana and Uttar pradesh states . The actual NCT of delhi is about 1600 km sq.

The thing is, countries differ on how they define their city sizes. That Abu Dhabi image is like 50% unused sandy space 😂. In other countries, London would be considered way bigger and would swallow a lot of the Home Counties areas. But anyway… cool video

Tokyo as a city ceased to exist in the 1940ies, it was dissolved Its 23 special wards are actually completely independent cities in a way, there's no mayor of Tokyo, that's the very reason they are special wards and not just wards ;) Tokyo nowadays can refer to a lot of thing but administratively the only thing that's left is the Tokyo metropolitan area that englobes the 23 special wards and a bunch of other cities and villages west of it

That's the size of the municipality, the size of the city of Altamira (urban area), is much smaller. In Brazil, it is customary to use city as a synonym for municipality, but a municipality is, in fact, just an administrative area.

Most of the US "cities" were actually metro areas... so at that point, it's kinda arbitrary. As far as cities go, the largest in the US 48 tops out at 2266 sq km, and it's Jacksonville.

Yeah they kinda messed this one up. The places in the us they put aren’t actually one city it’s a bunch of cities in a similar area all labeled as one. Most of those peoples addresses don’t actually say Atlanta or New York City. Jacksonville is the biggest one that is labeled under Jacksonville everywhere. I go to school in Jacksonville and when I’m driving there from home after I see the welcome to Jacksonville sign it still takes me another 45 minutes to get to campus. And even then I could probably drive for another 15 minutes and still be in Jacksonville. Maybe I’m just salty but I feel like jax deserved a spot

That's them all, that's them all The NY Tri-State, coming into view and not mentioned by Jack: 👁👄👁 The reason many US places are at the top is because the creator counted the whole metropolitan area rather than just the city, or they combined cities (like Dallas-Fort Worth or Boston-Providence). That's why the NY Tri-State is number one, because it's more than just NYC. If we count just the city and not a whole urban area like Tokyo-Yokohama, the world's largest city by area is Chongqing in China at 82,403 squared km (the size of Austria). In the top ten of cities by area, all except Khartoum (ranked third) are in China.

Fun Fact: a quick google search shows that Istanbul actually has an area of 5343 sqkm while Christchurch has 1426 sqkm. I dont know how they got the number they got in this video but it is simply incorrect. Istanbul is quite massive.

I just checked the Area of Sydney, Australia and it's 12,368 Km2. Even bigger than New York (12,093) shown above. I had to check because I know how wide spread Sydney is.

I'm not sure for every city but I think that most of them are the size of metropolitan areas and not the actual cities. For example Paris is stated to be 2500 km² for 11mil habitants, when the actual city is "only" ~100km² for about 2mil habitants

They missed Melbourne Australia which is quite frankly massive. It is bigger than the whole Boston Province with an area of 9990km2. Brisbane is also huge with greater city area of over 15,000kms2 however this includes the southern area of the city which is generally classed as a city in itself (Logan City) and also the areas of Moreton Bay and Ipswich which are the very outer suburbs of the city. They do however look like one big city on a map.
