omg you're right thats awesome i always wonder why he didnt talk like zhenyata now i know why, (maybe) he didnt learn any human language bcz of his war programming and he does bird sounds bcz he tries to communicate with the only one who is there, his bird friend Q_Q
It's very likely. Omnics are special in the Overwatch world because they're capable of learning, so it's likely that Bastion wasn't programmed with any human language, but he's capable of learning languages... and it just so happens that the first language he learned was chirping.
To anyone who was wondering, Yvain Gnabro (who this animation was in memory of) was one of the animators who worked on the Overwatch shorts that sadly had gotten into a motorcycle accident and passed away.
yea it could be a whole movie, no lines needed, just look at Wall-e, great movie showing alot of emotion through a robot that has no lines, it would be great!
Have you seen The Iron Giant? It's an older animated movie that a lot of people are saying has inspired this short. It's beautifully made and basically asks the question "what if a gun had a soul, and didn't want to be a gun." - Brad Bird. (He directed The Iron Giant btw) you honestly need to watch it, it's amazing
To anyone who was wondering, that city Bastion was marching towards at 6:35 was Stuttgart, and the castle (or schloss) in the background at 6:15 was Eichenwalde, the new map. Additionally, at 7:20 that Crusader was not, in fact, Reinhardt, but Balderich von Adler, the (former) leader of Reinhardt's order.
Well, it that would be a shit programming, like, another bastion friend would be shooting and he would be liek "OH SHIT THAT THING SOUNDS LIKE A GUN!" then starts doing friendly fire.
Wow, people in these comments are pricks. 1. If you don't like people talking over even a dialogue-less videos, just watch the original, not a reaction. 2. Technically every video out there is for the views. Seeing things for the first time, is one-time experience, which is nice to be captured in a video, because after seeing something ourselves, many of us are curious to see others' reactions to some good bits, and want to hear their opinions/theories about it, or just see their shock/amazement. It's same as wanting to show something cool to a friend, wondering what they'll think. 3. This isn't an analysation video, where you constantly pause and inspect for details. Therefore, when you see a shadowy guy using Reinhardt's abilities, while there're 20 more things happening all around, it's not that unacceptable to assume that it is THE Reinhardt, and miss the smaller one in the background.
That short felt very Ghibli inspired. Especially the moment when Bastion leaves the forest, right before his flashback seems so very reminiscent to me. The big open meadow, the blue sky with it's pure white clouds towering up and most of all the music. I bet that Bastion is a product of Hayao Miyazaki's Laputa - Castle in the Sky.
TheCoper COper That's what "Inspired" means. It is Blizzard's own, simplistic version of something Ghibli did on a greater scale many years before. It doesn't have to be as complex and grand as a Ghibli movie to be inspired by it.
It's not PTSD, it's his programming. Bastion was made to be a peacekeeper, but turned into a warbot through Omnic interference, and his mission was to assault that city. His response to the woodpecker was a standard threat reaction, clear the immediate area of potential hostiles and cover for hostiles. And also, in response to what Panzer said about him 'healing' the robot, what he did was tap into the downed bot's memory chip, experiencing the battle through the destroyed unit's memories. Those memories in turn triggered his (potentially damaged, we don't know what exactly caused him to go into that dormant state) memory chip and caused him to go back on mission until our avian friend intervened.
Bastion has no fear, since he's a robot. His programming lead him to believe that the woodpecker was a threat to him, and due to his programming he's supposed to eliminate threats.
Owlmare If he had no emotions, why would he help the bird? That would seem like a significant waste of energy to a normal robot. And why would he consider one bird friend, and another as "a threat"?
Whats up with all the hate in the comments? Compared to most reaction videos out there at least she talks about the lore before and after the video. Most reaction videos and reaction youtubers out there just watch the video and thats it.
I cant believe that no one comments on the music in the animations. I cant commend the music team enough for any of the Blizzard cinematics. The music is binding everything together so exeptionally well, especially in this one.
The map was Numbani I believe. I think he went dormant in a different location than Eichenwalde and that's how he ended up there, Eichenwalde was just the FINAL battle, there were many more. I dunno it is just looks 100% identical to Numbani for me, but it might be the "cookie cutter" big city they will be using in overwatch.
Captain here : Yvain Gnadbro (the person in whos memory the cinematic is) was a animator who worked for Blizzard and died recently in a motorcycle acciedent.
I don't see why she gets so many thumbs down on her videos, she's being genuine and herself. Kudos for that. I like you and what you do Miss :) Emotions are good mm'kay.
Play of the Game Bastion Eliminated Tree Eliminated Tree Eliminated Tree Eliminated Tree Eliminated Woodpecker Eliminated Tree Eliminated Tree Eliminated Tree *Overwatch theme*
I don't think what we're seeing here is him struggling with his hatred of humanity. Instead I think we're seeing him struggle with his programing. If you noticed at the end there when his lights turned back to blue for the final time it was like he was waking up with a start. He did a little jump thing there indicative of someone coming out of a doze or something. I don't think he was trying to heal the other bastion, instead I think he checked it's memory and it's programing put his own old programming in full control. He was already being partially controlled by his programing even before then as that's the reason he headed toward the city in the first place. In the end tho he chose to ignore his programing and go back into the forest. I'd be interested to see how he came to be fighting on behalf of Overwatch. BTW my favorite Overwatch short is still "Dragons"
This is a surprisingly realistic portrayal of real life PTSD. It gets thrown around like a joke constantly online, but this is the reality of it, it's not funny, it's not a joke. Those of us who live with it have to deal with things like this. There are other symptoms of course, but vivid flashbacks like this are common upon a trigger. So the next time any of you are about to crack a PTSD flashback trigger joke online, seriously, think back to this. Remember how it felt to watch this fictional robot deal with it. Some people have to try to live their real lives while dealing with that.
This short animation is so beautiful, done in a way with no dialouge and as you pointed only "beeps and boops", which really captivated me as a viewer. I'm just stunned by the work Blizzard puts into theese animated shorts.
i have forgiven bastion, but torbjorne, hell no, i will need a movie much more emotional than this to forgive that dumbass dwarf that gets potg for punching a turret
You are SO CUTE! Always loved your videos ^^ "The last Bastion" was awesome and suprisingly emotional! I really felt sorry for the little PTSD bot! The flipside of it is seeing so bloody many bastion reinhart combos in game after it was released, but I can live with that xD Loved the video, thank you for sharing!
+TradeChat reinhardt was a member of a group of hammer weidling armoured men. and his armor in the video matches the king better. and he's found dead in the new map. and a skin for Reinhardt. so I think it was the king. or just another crusader
I usually hate reaction videos but this really was the best reaction video i've ever seen, you knew everything about Bastion right from the beginning and all the discussion you made was really interesting and on point to the content you reacted to, amazing, subscribed
+Eri Otto You could say her backstory is a lot like a certain (very patriotic) superhero's. So why don't we call her... Captain A-mei-rica? (I am so sorry.)
+TradeChat You asked what the 54 meant, I think, since he is E54, that E means that would be the fifth line of Bastions made and then the 54 would mean he was the 54th in that line?
+The allied gamers god yes i really do hope they do!! cuz i mean they have so much good material to work with!! it would be a movie i would watch and im sure every overwatch gamer would to!
+kingmark210 it took them 4 weeks to do 1 animation of 15 mins. if what I say is right then that means they have probably already started with the movie and it shoud have reached about 30 mins that means 8 weeks of work if they go on in 1/2 years we should have the movie
Well Sony will probably have money sitting around seeing as how Ghostbusters won't be getting a sequel. They have a relationship with Legendary pictures from the Warcraft movie. They have experience in CGI for extra manpower. But hey we got an Angry birds movie.
I'd honestly prefer an animated series where they delved into the past as to not mess up game lore...watching overwatch form and go on missions weekly would be amazing
You’re literally the only react person I consistently watch to the end, because you’re adorable. The tangents, the randomness, awkwardness... I mean, you’re an actual person, having actual thoughts, unlike everyone else just regurgitating their outro “like comment subscribe and follow me on social media” crap.
Welp if you run into genji out there, I'd suggest fighting him in scout mode, punch him if he uses reflect and just keep jumping and moving around while shooting the ninja. Hope it helps.
Ikr same, I play Bastion a lot since his shorts was released. Luckly I have overgrown Bastion but I bought the Omnic Crisis as him before he was broken.
That looks awesome. Good thing you didn't pick up, this way we got to see it. BTW, I never thought Bastion of all characters would be able to make me feel so much! They did an amazing job.
It's amazing how powerful these OW animations are, they have consistently surprised me in that regard. I know this has become a cliche thing to say, but I really wish they would make a feature-length animated film. In the meantime these shorts are just incredible. Love the videos
Whenever bashing hears that sounds like shooting or or something similar to the sound of shooting it brings back his memory of the war when he was a soldier a machine designed to fight for only one purpose
i said it once & i'll say it agian: Blizzard has the talent & the power to make a BAWS Awesome Overwatch Movie or mini-TV or RU-vid Series on their Overwatch Channel.
i really love this Short it surpasses the Honzo short which was my fav, well now this short is my fav. even though Bastion doesn't talk his little beeps or wizz's combined with the atmosphere of his surrounding & the background soundtrack really makes feel & see how Bastion is reacting: for example: after leveling a good chunk of the forest the darker lighting with Bastion's slight over hunch posture & his slow walk & the subtle base & drum soundtrack really convaies on how he is feeling.
I mean absolutely no disrespect, but praising the emotion in the animation and then putting yourself down for getting emotional is hypocritical. Embrace it. It's what makes you human. Being an adult is overrated.
You made this reaction video so meaningful and did a great job! You really sold the emotion and how important it was. I can't say enough about how good you made this reaction video! Great job.
Hey Panser, thank you so much for this video ! To see all that unpretended joy in your face (when little birds discovered Bastion) has certainly made my day ! ;) I wish you all the best, please keep up the good work ! :)
I can't imagine a better way to flesh out this character. It reminded me a lot of the iron giant from way back in the day. The more blizzard makes these shorts the more I hunger for overwatch lore.
To be fair, this is my favorite Overwatch animation / cinematic. The emotional rollercoaster this one takes you on, without any dialogue whatsoever, is very intense. In my opinion, it's the best "small piece of media" Blizzard's ever produced.
I know right, i thought everyone everywhere had the same pronunciation. But yea you would be surprised that it differs where you're from that pronunciations might be different, just in case you didn't know.
This entire short film is an allegory for PTSD among service members. When Bastion discovered the bodies of his fellow units in the field, the only thing I could think of was Arlington cemetery.
It's not a metaphore, Bastion literally has PTSD from the Omnic War. But that war, omg, the animation is so good, looks so violent, and those giant Bastions in the background?
Let's just say it's the Omnic version of PTSD. Omnics aren't exactly like humans, but they do share some traits with them. Remember Zenyatta's quote: "Do I think? Does a submarine swim?"?
It's not just about ptsd, its a story of rebuilding and moving forward rather than dwelling on the past. Which is symbolized by the nest and his bird friend trying to help him put it back together.
Now I can't shoot at bastion's without hesitating! 😭 ...What are you looking at!? I'm tough! I'm too manly to have feelings! Yeah! Yeah. yeah... I regret nothing. 😣
I always watch this when I'm drunk for some reason, I think you're reaction is so genuine that it convinces me that you actually care for people that have ptsd
There was one guy who commented on the original video, took me back to my childhood days. "You are not a weapon, You are what you choose to be." The Iron Giant.
It's Balderich von Alder, the leader of the crusaders. The new castle map features his corpse sitting on the throne. And how does he look like Reinhardt? Completely different armour and weapon, especially the weapon.
I started watching this knowing practically nothing about Overwatch or Bastion and I must say that regardless of that, I found this animation to be so beautiful and so cool. It could stand alone as its own short film and have nothing to do with Overwatch and still be entertaining. It definitely inspired me to check out more about this game :)
That scene of the Omnic War with those soldiers surrounded on every side by hordes of unwavering machines hellbent on their elimination... I wish we saw more of that conflict.
+Comic Gamer Kids I'm still holding out hope that it's just training exercises. Because that would be Bastion is now sentient and is just killing for the fun of it, not because of programming. XD
The city that Bastion walks to is Düsseldorf, in Germany. His programming forced him to go there to fight in the battle, but he was instead somehow redirected and shut down in the forest.
I just ran into you going down a rabbit holes of the youtube, and your emotion for these games is impressive and respected, and i love how you said, oh and its memory of someone and now you're crying over a robot... i was thinking the same exact thing like, how does she have me leaking for a robot lol...
Its actualy quite deep. Bastion is a battle omnic. Omnics do think they have a soul. Like we think we have a soul. He desides to ignore the programm to attack and kill and got back to the peaceful nature with his friend ganymed. Its also full of lore, shows the Order which Reinhard belongs to. You can see New Stuttgart and the castle you can see is eichenwalde. This short is a masterpiece. Its quality equals the quality of Pixar movies. And crying? A 51 Y old guy like me tears up every time i watch this. I watched three react YTmovies and i my tears flowed every time! So gorgeous!
