The Last Beekeeping Task Before Winter

This is the last thing I do before wrapping up the hives for the winter. Oxalic acid is mixed with sugar water and dribbled onto to the bees, knocking down any remaining varroa mites. Oxalic acid should be applied in late fall/early winter when there is no brood inside the hive.

OA kills brood? Where did you hear that? It does not kill mites in capped cells. If it kills open brood I would have killed my colonies already. I treat every 4 to 7 days for 5 consecutive treatments using vaporization method. Opening the hives in such cold Temps and putting liquid on the bees? I hope they make it. I did a search for "Does oxalic acid dribble kill brood". I found that dribble may kill open brood. I've also heard it harms the bees digestion somewhat. Either way, we know varroa transmitted diseases kills bees so doing nothing is not a good option either. Since you are off grid, without access to a power source maybe vaporizatuon isnt an option for you. Again, good luck with your bees.

The OA dribble method can kill open larvae and is only effective against mites attached to the honey bees themselves. Temperatures should ideally be between 0-7 degrees Celsius because the bees should be clustering in order to dribble the sugar water mix directly on top of them. No problem at all to pop the lids briefly at these temps.
