The Last British Airways B747 Flight - An Emotional Farewell

I travelled to the UK to see the Final British Airways 747 flight and landing. During this trip, I was able to see all 3 British Airways 747 Retro Liveries across the countryside in England and Wales.
My first stop was Dunsfold Aerodrome, where I visited the Landor livery 747. I was able to go inside and take a last look at the cabin and the cockpit. Then I drove to Cotswold Airport to see the Negus livery 747. Cotswold Airport CEO Suzannah Harvey personally gave me a tour, explaining the work being done to save the 747.
My last stop was in Cardiff, Wales where the BOAC livery 747 flew out from Cardiff to St Athan; it was only a short ferry flight but it was a very emotional one nonetheless, as this was the final BA 747 flight. I was at St Athan to watch the Final BA 747 landing. It was a momentous landing with a quick stop on the short runway. After landing, I went inside the 747 to interview the pilots and witness the final power down of the 747. It was the end of an era for the British Airways 747.
All 3 BA retro 747 liveries (Landor, Negus and BOAC) will be preserved in the UK.
Thanks to British Airways and SpeedBird TV for sharing some great footage: / speedbirdtv

It is sad seeing these planes being retired as they have such an elegance to them. I spent many hours on BA 747's flying between London Heathrow and Phoenix Arizona. It always felt so good being in them even if I was in economy class. One of the best times was flying out over Scotland (home) and heading outt over the Atlantic ocean and down below was St Kilda.

“Do you think the plane’s gonna make it?” Is that even a question? It’s the 747, it’s gone through so much. Of course it would be able to land for its final flight. The end of an era. I have seen every 747 that graced Heathrow carrying the BOAC and all subsequent BAW liveries I have been watching them come and as new and old planes, and have always looked upon then as technical master pieces, wonders of '60'S engineering. It's so true. Unless it's in your blood, people don't get it. "It's just a machine!" They say. Oh it's so much more than that. There's only one thing harder than watching a plane be shut down for the final time, and that's seeing them being dismantled. I literally can't watch that. It just breaks my heart, seeing these majestic, elegant beings, each with their own personality, being cut up for scrap.

From what I understand it was because they wanted to replace the safer 4 engine planes with more fuel efficient 2 engine planes. One benefit is supposed to be that the 2 engine planes are supposed to be able to fly longer without refueling so it should be possible to fly more places direct without a stopover. The reality is that I have not seen any routes that had a stopover change to a direct flight when they replace a 747 route with a 2 engine plane. I think the cost of fuel was probably the only reason.

@@Shibu11229 it can maintain a lower altitude until it runs out of fuel. It’s just a little lower than the altitude a four engine aircraft can maintain in 3. In general, the system in twins are simpler and thus offer less opportunity for failure. Airbus recognised this when they built the A380, which doesn’t have full Sicilians systems on all of its engines. Every multiple engine failure in airline history has had a common cause, this more engines would not have helped.

Maybe about 60 percent full. The flight attendants let me run around. Took me up to the flight deck and got to meet the pilots and engineer. They let me hang out in the first class. Amazing flight. That was in 1983. There was no fear of terrorist. No 9/11. No taking off shoes and socks bullshit. Life was free and everyone lived their life the way they wanted. That's what the 747 always represented to me. Including multiple other times I flew in it while flying Qantas. Comparing those times to now in 2020 and 2021, man I want to go back.

Absolutely AMAZING Sam!!. I flew on a few 747's when I was adopted from Romania, to New Zealand, I flew Lufthansa 747-200, and Air NZ 747-200. I hope you and your family all have a Very Merry Christmas. And a safe and happy new year.

I've flown on a 747 2 or 3 times before, but that was when I was 4 years old and younger so I don't remember a single thing, but I'm glad I can say, that my physical body has been inside a 747!

Sam Chui - I LOVE your passion. I was on the Tobin Bridge (high vantage point) when one of the first 747's was landing in Boston - June 1970. Fifty years ago. The 747 took me to points all over the globe. It is hard not to be emotional about this machine which opened the doors for so many people to see so many of our world neighbors. Thank you for documenting in all your videos how these machines - all of them - have made us all better neighbors. God bless you and keep teaching and reminding us about how fortunate we all are.

My favorite equipment. Flew across the pond many times in a 747. I remember watching my first 747 land at Heathrow circa 1972. I was speechless. It is such a beautiful plane and I always had a great flying experience on them. So sad they are gone now. Great video - thanks. Pretty choked up right now.

One of the best videos of the year for me....thanks. Bitter sweet indeed. Sad to see her go as they all have a soul and a personality and it is the end of an era, but great to see it will be preserved along with the legacy of BOAC. As an avgeek myself since I was a kid and having flown on many variants of the 747 over the years, it truly is emotional to see them disappear. Thanks again Sam, was a nice presentation all round.

The first time when I saw a B747 in person while standing on the airport ground was a few years ago and I don't remember which airport it was, when it had passed by I was just in awe of the size and stood there till she passed by completely. It was a Luftansa B747. Unfortunately hadn't had the luck to fly in one.

Wonderful video, Sam! This was a very emotional video, even though I had never flown with BOAC/BA. However, I was fortunate to fly on two Air France 747s in 1975, crossing the pond from Canada and back. It truly is one of the most iconic aircraft of all time, one that millions of people will miss, but will cherish the memories of. Thank you for another year of awesome videos. Happy Holidays, and all the best in the new year. Safe travels, and good health!

So well done! Thank you, Sam, for this awesome and emotional documentary. Flying on BA’s B747-400 from LHR to JFK, me on my own and on my way to the U.S. for the first time will always be an unforgettable trip to me. One year later I had the chance to see the 747-8 production lines in Everett and also fly the 400 at Lufthansa’s training simulator. Thank you, Queen of the skies, you definitely have a special place n my heart! ❤️✈️
