@@cornelius2993 Yea i bet, when i was at Edwards AFB i used to love watching the 14's and the F4's takeoff and land. Edit: Thank you for your service o7.
Just a sexy plane hands down especially with those Pratt and Whitney J30S turbo fans Mach 2 as they say Haulin the Mail. When they engage the Delta wing setting and kick n Afterburners and make any sudden banks 4/5 gs easy skin rolls back on your face. To hell with being a Radar Intercept Officer give me the Stick . Just a sexy plane this was replacing the Phantom F4 when I was n The Marines 71. Da Nang Much more nimble n dogfight and more payload. We salute you Gruman F14 hell of a job.. McDonald Douglas did a pretty good job with the F18 alittle less Mach but a great carrier based fighter.
From a RAF Brit.... A fantastic combination of good music, a fine example of U.S engineering, long live the TOMCAT....! Good memories of my career, sometimes in the U.S....
asparwhite86 in a video of the f-35 wrote here, this is big S ... Only Nortrop-Grumman is capable of producing military aircraft in USA. F-14 best an YF-23 bestest. And i am not fun of Americans
+Perf Tulsa just googled. done of those concepts were just awesome. esp this i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/o8b2qugblywmys2sytku.jpg but I think the hard beefy edges of the F14 make it look more sinister. and therefore. better lol I mean there in not an aircraft in the world that looks nearly as cool or mean as the F14 looking at it straight on from the nose.
number one Iran does not need us anymore to keep the f14's in the air they just made the parts themselves by reverse engineering it and plus we could always use different parts and second Cough Cough f35. if they have the money to make this failure of a plane than Uncle Sam should be able to give a bit of pocket change to the f14
@@windshearahead7012 I agree with you... no one cares about DCS when you have this awesome footage. Hugh, Oliver... we don't care because DCS is a game... and I'm not in a bad mood either... just don't care about your game. Why are we here? Because we want watch the greatness of a fantastic aircraft. Not some noob playing a game. And as always, have a nice day.
@@scottyweimuller6152 1, The Tomcat is from the 70s, but the video has D Tomcats, which are from the 90s. 2, Even the old Tomcats had very advanced autopilot systems, including Altitude hold, Ground track, Automatic carrier landing, and limited auto-trim.
@@scottyweimuller6152 yup even the f14B has autopilot systems, like the guy above me said. (I know because i fly the f14 as a professional licensed pilot in DCS..)
@@scottyweimuller6152 You obviously didn't google anything. Because moron the f-14 had/has autopilot. In fact if you had, you would know that autopilot was first demonstrated in France on June 18, 1914. Thank's for playing though.
Wall Stretcher JPSC not exactly... he had not really autopilot as it is understood today. The only thing he could do was to maintain the attitude of the flight. For example: u cant turn the HDG knob to turn the plane, but u can switch a button in the right moment of bank for mantein this grade of bank turn. Same thing for altitude, u cant insert a flight level value, u can just switch the button in the right moment of pitch (up or down) for mantein this attitude of flight
God the F-14 was such a beautiful looking bird! Even 40-odd years after it was being designed it still look a million bucks (especially when compared to that horrible F-35)
Brilliant video, great music too. Awesome aircraft, awesome active career. A tribute to all the professional crews that worked with the mighty Tomcat. Purrrrrrrrrrrfect.
Really interesting. How many re-fuels would you need on a mission like that? Do you ever get cramp being stuck in the same position for so long? At least on a long haul flight you get to walk around. You have my respect
The Gruman F14 was the perfect plane for carrying huge payload with becoup automatic firepower coupled with the RIO pilot properly painting these early MIGS with state of the Art radar and saying hello from 2 or 3 miles or more . It was long over due since the Phantom ,F4 didn't cut the mustard. I started seeing these very fast and maneverable . I was n the Marines 71 saw these works of art showing up . Then came another carrier based fighter with plenty of Moxy. McDonald Douglas delivered n Spades. Great Planes and a great time to grow up. The F18 with 2 J30 turbo fans tremendous amount of thrust and Gs. This plane talked the talk and walked the walk
I really enjoyed this footage. I can't believe these great crews stay in the air for so long! Wow. I also liked to see the crews having a sense of humor and enjoying what they do. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!
What a beautiful bird the F-14 is... IT is sad that it retired; but I guess it got old and the maintenance was getting a little crazy for it. I hope they are well-preserved in museums.
There are a lot of F-14s on display around the country. Most of them are on display outside of an aviation museums or at the main entrance of military installations. There are a few F14s that are inside museums and out of the elements. I'm not sure how long an aircraft can last outside in the elements just sitting there. But at least the F14s that are inside will be okay. it would of been nice if the government or a private company kept a couple of them in flying condition. to do demo flights at air shows that'd be cool to see one flying.
I agree. I think it is also bullshit how the F-14 is being replaced by obsolete jets like the Super Hornet, when the F-14 could have been given a modernization upgrade and would be cheaper and better than the F/A-18.
The Super Hornet isn't actually obsolete, but the A-C variants of the F/A-18 are. Let's also remember that the F-14 is a 40-year-old airframe and that upgrading avionics etc to provide capabilities for AIM-120D support etc is costly to develop and more costly to roll out.
I was on, the last cruise of the f14. duck under the wings on your way to chow, every day. 64 ft of combat porn. Whats even better, is tying yourself to the railing on the port side slq 32 platform, at the end of cats 3 and 4... it drops with both engines literally in your face.... good times
I was born in Virginia Beach next to Oceana Air Base then moved to Baton Rouge then n the Marines 71 saw plenty of the F14s from Miramar east of Coronado I was at MCRD Base San Diego great days Bro
At 03:44, the only evidence ever filmed that the Tomcat was actually... a three seater. Other than that, this video is absolutely superb. Good mix of humour, boring cruise sequences and down to earth action. Made by soldiers for soldiers. I totally bought it. Thanks!
"True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost." -Arthur Ashe Everyone from Top Gun might need these advices.
A crew chief basically is the boss of an aircraft, its his plane and the pilot is just the person who flies it. Kind of like an armorer giving a soldier a gun, its the responsibility of the armorer as to what happens to that gun.
Loved the year I did at MCRD Marine Corp Base San Diego by Coronado Pacific Fleet based alot of their tonnage there. Then off to DaNang Plenty of F4 Phantoms flying tree top level and loud u could see black exhaust dropping down from behind and could tell they were tree top level slow airspeed
Have jets accidentally been pushed off the carrier when being moved around the deck? Whenever I see them moving I get uneasy with how damn close to the edge they get
I was on the USS America CV-66. The first carrier to transit the Ditch aka the Sues Canal. It was stressful for the whole crew. We all had our jobs to do and all were done with practice and pride. We did the ditch!!
I was armoured and drove recce because I didn’t have the brains to fly so I feathered the tillers of a piece of armour like I was flying a Tomcat. I wasn’t and I knew it but every time I climbed into the hatch and put on my crew guard and plugged in my headset and started the engine I imagined I was doing it in a Tomcat.
I'm still not 100% sure why the USN didn't adapt the Tom to be a strike aircraft. It had a pretty big payload, good loiter time, very flexible, etc... Oh and btw, I'm a Brit, and this video makes me like America more.
6:50 - MMMmmm, Donuts...aughhlaughhhjllaughh. Just kiddin'! Livin' the dream ain't all excitement & glamour. Sometimes it's just a grind and plain hard work. Tomcat Drivers....Awesome aviators flying legendary aircraft.
Though the F-14 is retired, I still regard this fine aircraft as the torchbearer of naval aviation. The Tomcat, being able to carry a whopping load of firepower while being incredibly nimble was a true and proven workhorse without rival or peer. I loved everything Grumman Aircraft ever built, dating back to the F-4F Wildcat and the F-6F Hellcat of WWII. They were the hallmark of naval aviation even back then.
Who else is a Pilot to and flys planes with very tiny cockpits like Gliders and knows how hard is to piss in a bottle and flying the plane in same the time and wants to have piddle packs ?
Being a young kid back then around the plane on the flight deck was very impressive I've around big machines in my life time and the TOMCAT beats em all
This fantastic fighter just need a pair of more powerful engine to beat any newer model. After 37 years still in service in Iran air-force, still over performing their newer Russian fighters!
I wouldn't go so far as to say that. The Russians build jets with different attributes. As with the American military, they always go for bigger which means less agile. The Russian jets are far more agile since they are smaller and lighter. To be honest, in todays age, the platform is becoming redundant, it is almost all down to the weapons systems now. Range and stealth is everything.
Jimbo Jones agree, I'm thinking of necessity of piloted planes! Drones are less costly and safer to fly, pilot can have his cup of coffee and snacks while flying the fighter...
Hate to break it to you but Iran has no new SU aircraft they would rather use cheap Chinese fighters. The F14 is my favorite aircraft followed by the SU30 mainly for what India did to the USAF in 2008 and 2012 with it. Total annihilation.
Actually McDonald Douglas proposed 3 new versions, 1 with new engiens same airframe, another one new airframes engines and the last was a completely a new airframe with new thrust vectoring engines, improved aerodinamics, new canopy, avionics.....anny of the options where cheaper than to design a new aircraft (f-18) but our genious goverment opted to ho with Boeings f-18 wich the original was a total disaster and had to redesign the whole aircraft (f-18 super hornet)
That video was amazing! thank you for posting that, it not always glamorous for those guys and seeing a video like this giving an inside view is awesome! if your the owner or know the owner thank you!
4:19 - Thank you for answering a life-long question I have had about pilots. So they *do* do it like truckers, then. Also, why the fuck is his piss so fucking cloudy?! Get yourself to a doctor, son!
tomcat's pilot you are so funny , all the squad simulâtes , sleeping moment during air patrol , ..;i was laughing too much in my flat when watching this video , most of those pilots could be colonel now or retired , but dude , thx for all if you read my post one day...;and honestly F-14 has been my favorite since my teenage between F-15...F-16 ...F-18
Hey!!! The F14 TOMCAT is not dead!!! Iran still use them to this day!!! They're even thinking about making new ones after tearing down one of them, and understand how it was made. LONG LIVE THE F14 TOMCAT!!!
@@kevinmandrile5074 Those are early A with lot of limitations. Completely out dated as today's standards (even from the 2000's ones). But yeah, they still fly
@@jowenjv4463 Well, at least they're better than nothing. I didn't expected you to respond since your comment is five years old now, thank you, greetings from Italy 😉👍🇮🇹👋❤
@@kevinmandrile5074 Yes. Fuck 5 years now... Holly shit. Times goes on so fast. Thanks for the Kind words, cheers from France. And by judging your profile pic', give some love to the 'Cat in DCS.
A-10 at its core is simple, reliable (turbo fan engines) and rugged (straight forward air frame) this combined made it cost effective, could have its avionics upgraded but the main points I made earlier would still be in effect. The F-14 had a very high (expensive) preventative maintenance and maintenance program. Expensive air frame due to variable wing system. The air frame was massive and nowadays everyone goes for longer ranges on weapon systems. Even with a stealth coating it's air frame was so large that on radar It's shape would easily be caught. Even if all of the avionics were upgraded it would still have the same issues in its core. It's sad to say but that's why it was canned. I heard politics with Chaney lead to it as well. Would of been interesting to see a new model in the future :(
f-14...what a piece of shit...not that maneuverable, plagued by engine problems..wide separation between engines depending on your attitude susceptible to flat spins if you lost an engine..some one once said the US Navy in order to get the AGM-65F Maverick missile were forced to buy the Tomcat to carry it..Don't know how true that is but the Tomcat always struck me as a lumbering POS ...
if i would be priviliged enough to stand on the side somewhere (safely) on a Carrier watching opps,i'd be gazing my eyeballs out all dayyyy....what an incredible coordinated effort from the entire crew to make all this happen.so many things have to work in unison alone,it's just amazing. like setting the steamcatapult for every lauch.every plane's specific weight, fuel load,ordinances,extc....everything gets calculated on the fly....during the take off sequence,if the plane idles too long on the deck, the fuel burned is being deducted just before take off.
The only aircraft which possessed the capabilities to shoot down an SR-71 was the F-14 Tomcat, that could use its AIM-54 Phoenix long range missile against the fast black plane.
In the 80- the J-37 Viggen was equiped with RB-71 Skyflash with a speed of mach 4+. But in practice it still means a headon shot is the only way. In teory a shot from the JA-37 could hit if it came from the front and below SR-71. So if the SR-71 flew at top maxuimum altitude it wouldnt work.
So we developed a weapon (AIM54) to be sure we had something powerful and fast enough to shoot down the fasted plane in OUR own arsenal? Thats like Apple writing software to crack the user access code on their own devices to better help the FBI spy on its own citizens. ... Добро пожаловать, Россия
Nick Boulakis in all likeliness the RB-71 wouldn’t have been able to compensate for the 7-8K knot closure rate between the missile and the Blackbird and souls have simply missed
The AIM-54 was an unreliable system. While it might have a chance if the attacking aircraft happened to be in the flight path of the SR-71, in most cases it would not come close.
I love all the flight sequences! like seeing the crew routine! Eating, observing, some down time to work on a puzzle and the cool part is getting some sleep too…a friend of mine said “you can sleep on a tactical jet”? I said yes… autopilot and setting waypoints and if there is a problem and alarm will sound off and wake you. I presume that’s the it works,,, if someone wants to clarify that…please do
