With The Crew's permanent shutdown, more has been lost than you would expect. I spoke to whammy4, whose team are working on an offline mode, to find out more about this game.

Ubisoft: "You will own nothing. Now give us that subscription fee." Honestly, done with buying games from bigger companies. Indie and AA seem to be the way at this point. It's such a shame that people that love these games get the brunt of the worst of this. I really hope something breaks soon on this current position in gaming. Thanks for the look into this community, Revo.

I have been on this train for a long time, I haven't bought a game from a major developer in years and intend to keep it that way, AA and indie studios are more passion driven when it comes to making they're games, money is just a side thing for them because they care about making a quality game unlike big devs like Ubi. Sony Ubisoft and EA are a plague to the gaming industry!

In mid 2016 I was given a copy of the crew and after a few days of playing it made me think about something personal. My father had passed away a few months prior and driving around the open world in the game made me think about when him and I drove cross country in a moving truck when I was 12. My mother and sisters flew out ahead of us leaving us behind to finish packing before taking the long trip from Fresno California to Baltimore Maryland. I had found the same map we used to plot our road trip not long after he passed away and told myself someday I'll make that drive again. My life was a mess and I knew that I may not ever get the chance to really take that trip so I decided to do it in the crew. Oddly enough while Fresno was on the map but Baltimore wasn't so I recreated the drive as best I could and decided to end it in Washington DC. One night I turned off all the lights, cranked up the sound, sparked a joint, booted up the game and played a mix of the songs that we listen to during the 3 days we spent driving cross country. It was extremely cathartic for me to just drive that night. I took my time and stopped at the towns that we had marked off on the map then did my best to remember what we did during those stops. After a few long hours I felt at peace. I needed that night with the crew and my thoughts. It's sad to see this game get killed off like this, especially because the second one is just a complete downgrade in every aspect imaginable. I hope #stopkillinggames pulls off a hail Mary and brings this game back to life. It doesn't even need to be online. This game may not have been the greatest racing or driving game ever made but it had a lot of hard work put into it to make it look and feel unique while being an enjoyable experience. More importantly it was something special to me.

You should add a link to Stop Killing Games in the description. If you don't know of it already, there's a movement started by Ross Scott to try and take legal action in order to stop companies from making games like The Crew completely unplayable when they drop support and at least provide the documentation, tools and/or infrastructure so the community could get the game running again without jumping through too many hoops. Part of the movement's strategy actually centers around The Crew as a game, as it's publisher Ubisoft is a French company and France is very pro-consumer in its laws, and also people who aren't actually even from France can make a complaint to their customer rights agency. All of the instructions to do this are on the Stop Killing Games site. Considering there's likely a decent number of The Crew owners who will be watching this, it could lend a big hand to the movement.

The thing about this game is that it was lukewarm at first, but once we saw TC2 and Motorfest, we realized how good we had it with the first game. TC2 felt too vibrant and like a Horizon clone, and they butchered the map, making it feel more repetitive, less detailed, and even going so far as to remove existing landmarks and towns.

I also think it was more like "Fast & Furious" type stunts and TC2 completely wiped that and made it a full arcade racer with goobery effects and goofy stunts

This game was 10x better than The Crew 2 for me. Mainly because the story/ campaign for the first game was fucking awesome and The Crew 2 lacked it. The Crew engaged me immediately with its cool, emotional, high-stakes, engaging story. I wanted to get revenge, clear my name and explore this world of criminals and underground street races. Having the campaign take you on a guided tour around the US was really cool too, because it meant I was encouraged to explore the whole of the game's US over time in a guided way that was driven by the story in the background. The progressive unlocks of the different car types and cars gave it a very unique, but structured and highly rewarding progression system. This is mirrored in the story where you climb the street-racing gang ranks. I think a lot of my issue with the second one was the vibe. You can see it in the game cover arts: For The Crew 1, it's black, gritty and you've got the whole US at your feet. For The Crew 2, it's bright white, it's all vivid and sanitised; it's not about going across the US or driving with others. It's about the different vehicles and the locations, but only in the context of racing. I think that's what annoyed me with The Crew 2: it was a racing game, not a driving game. The intro felt obnoxious and like the exact opposite of the first game. You have to customise a character and then go through a really scripted race where an announcer is screaming how cool everything is and how many likes you're getting in your ear. All before being given any reason to actually care about your character or anything in the world. The ONLY bit of story in The Crew 2 is: "Your unnamed character wants to become a racing icon by winning in all the different kinds of races. Go do that." How is that remotely compelling? Why should I want to win any of these races? So that generic Mr/ Mrs ____________ can be famous? Who cares? Start the game with your character crashing or losing a loved one or being bullied or struggling financially. Put some emotion in there that the audience can relate to and feel. Have an actual character with an actual story and give it some weight. Be interesting instead of PAINFULLY generic. This lack of stakes and sanitisation carries over to the races, too. The few races I did do felt really boxed in in The Crew 2 like I was stuck on a path. I didn't really feel like I wanted to win, just that I was there. I think it reflects a desire to give the game a wider appeal, it feels like the kind of decision that higher-ups at Ubi might've made as it just misses what made the first one so fun. Maybe the design team just wanted to take it in a new direction and contrast with the first one, but they still could've had an actual story. Ultimately, the addition of planes and boats and bikes was not enough to stave off my disappointment from the tonal shift and complete lack of story. Other than the map, which felt weirdly locked off to me, a lot of the stuff I loved about the original was gone. I probably played about with the switching mechanic for 1-2 hours and then stopped playing; which was nothing compared to the literal days I spent playing The Crew. Since The Crew 2 released, I've played The Crew 1 more, because the second one just isn't as fun.

Story made me hate the entire NFS series after Hot Pursuit 2 with a passion. It doesn't motivate me to play the game, it just makes me feel like shit and sours the entire experience. After watching the start of Most Wanted (and acquiring legitimate trauma), I would much rather have no story at all. You know, like Midnight Club 3. You can fuck right off with that. Stay away from motorfest. It's actually atrocious They took the linear story idea(think, you play a specific character for a mission), and did it for a fucking racing game. I shit you not, you do not use your own cars until AFTER you beat the race What this means is, if you want to play with your own cars, you have to replay the race. You don't use them for events unless you replay the event. This is not explained, and this is for EVERY. SINGLE. RACE. Not just 3, not 6, not even 15, but every. Single. Race.

The other thing too is the game used to feel even more like the US, and everywhere felt more unique, before the Wild Run expansion came out. It broke a lot of graphics and butchered many other things. But with PBR in Wild Run, they didn't adapt all the materials to it lol. With pre-WR, each region had its own weather, lighting, and color correction. Each region actually FELT different. I can't say the same for WR.

Awesome video. The Crew was the first game I followed from its announcement up to its release, and also to its death. The concept it had going was too much for 10-year-old me to not obssess over it and be excited about any announcements related it, and the fact I can't play it anymore bums me out to no end, especially since the sequels suck. A lot of what you said is pretty much how I've been feeling about racing games - my favorite genre - for years now. The festival shtick was done well in Horizon 1 but it never lived up to that onwards as much as Horizon 2 may be my favorite of them all. This trend spreading to every other franchise also doesn't help, though I'm glad NFS hasn't bowed to it yet. The worst part is that it's hard to talk about this stuff when it comes to racing games as most people who aren't into the niche just see it as the kind game you hop on to drive a car and nothing more. It's not hard to be laughed at for expecting depth in a racing games nowadays.

I wish Forza Horizon stuck with their original formula. Their games just feel stale at this point, even if the graphics improve or their is some minor improvments, or in some cases retrogressions. That goes for most games now days, and dont get me started of live-service games. That is the death of games, especially when its in the hands of "AAA" studios. I feel bad for the programmers, artists, modelers or anyone that put hours of hard work into their games, just for it to be shelved, or perhaps even deleted. Games like The Crew should be given a single player patch, once a studio wants to take them offline, that way, all of the hard work isnt gone for good.

I’m hoping at this point someone will file a lawsuit that’s public enough (and win) about companies charging $XX for a game that later can’t even be played at all when the company decides they don’t feel like it anymore. That there is so many game that the service shuts don’t but the game just reverts to a offline mode like older forzas and halos. If that’s the route a company plans on taking then just make it Free to Play and sell pointless skins/cosmetics with maybe car packs to offset it the kill it off when the income drys up.

25:06 only game to do the “car fest” aesthetic right is how NFS ProStreet did it because the way to do it is to make everything look like Gridlife or Gatebil but bigger. an irl “car fest” isn’t everyone having fifteen pristine supercars, it’s groups and teams and individuals bringing whatever they built as a showcase of performance, innovation, or just to have a good time putting down some solid runs. point being, it’s gotta be gritty. people shit the transmission at the line sometimes. someone might pop their tires in the burnout box. drift cars run bash bars and quick release bumpers because a good run means leaving a little paint on the concrete sometimes. put the grit back into car festivals!!! also shoutout motorstorm.

I was 13 when The Crew came out and I just remember it feeling like the future of racing games. The map, car selection, way you could turn a certain car into several different classes and especially the detailed first-person interiors. Yeah, I stopped playing it after 2-3 years. Yeah, I had uninstalled it by the time they announced it's shutting down. But I paid for the highest edition of that game, put hundreds of hours into it and had a crazy garage I put almost every day after school into building up. "Need for Speed" 2015 came out and the franchise went down from there, Forza came to PC and Horizon 5 happened. Nothing matched The Crew and the individual identity the game had, NfS being what it is made to be flashy above all for pre-teens and Forza watering itself down more and more as they keep repeating the same things. Yes new games are fun to "just play", but The Crew was immersive and set itself apart.

Man, the crew 1 will always have a special place in my heart. I remember hearing about the crew when it was first announced and got so much hype since it heavily reminded me of TDU2, which is my personal best racing game ive ever played. At one point i was also disheartened hearing i need an online connection to play. But once i got everything set, the crew 1 became one of the games ive played for a really long time, i mean sure its only like 500 hours or so but it speaks volumes on how much i enjoyed the game. I played it around the wildrun update and i remember didnt expecting the game to have an engaging story. The feel of progression was good too, progressively discovering landmarks and cities, upgrading your ride as you go from point A to B which was great to me since i rarely use fast travel and the driving felt okay to me. The PVP mode was fun too with your normal races and chaotic modes like blitz and crown. I reached PLATINUM 1 in this game and i did it without using meta cars that much, except for street skyline (fave car irl bias) and laferrari for the more chaotic game modes. To give credit to tc1 and tc2, they both have a good feeling of cruising with randoms in the open world. Sometimes i would cruise to a location on my own only to divert on purpose just to cruise with a random player i happen to pass by. But the sequel just doesnt have the same over all feel and fun as the first had in my opinion, and i played the second game to an almost same duration as the first and i reached plat 1 in pvp in that game too. I just hate that the series jumped to the festive racer bandwagon since it lost its initial identity which i liked and instead copy pasted what worked for other franchises. And like it got me thinking that, if the series sticked with its original identity, the addition of boats and planes would've opened a bunch of opportunities for game modes and mission types. Like sure the crew 2 had more game modes (sort of) now but when it released, it felt pretty bare bones. I havent played motorfest but considering its direction and style, im gonna wait for a heavy discount, compelling update or if it becomes free on ps plus. But man, RIP THE CREW 1, hopefully it somehow gets revived.

The Crew 2 could've been amazing if they traded out boats and planes for car customisation - for example, sticking floating devices and gliders on to achieve similar effects without being so overpowered.

Really great video, you are the first one who actually said what made the game special for me, the vibe, the felling of traveling and discovering and of course the map. Man that game, i was also one of "enjoying too late", and i didn't touched the multiplier unfortunately. But after a stressful day, putting the game with no hud and first person, it helped you know, i hope be able to make that later soon, and maybe finally playing more of the multiplayer. Thanks for the video, and thanks for the people creating this mod, you guys rock!!!

This is a fascinating take. A game I wish I got around to playing. This actually complements another Ubisoft game, Endwar. That had it's Theater of War servers shut down in 2013. Right now there is a grassroots revival of the game of former top players and even new players in its skirmish mode. While in the background some players are working on figuring out the game code to the extent of trying to build out a private server that would host the former Theater of War game mode. A RU-vidr by the name of ICECOLDSNAKE did a retrospective on it and started the revival. I hope the players of the crew find a way to save it's online component. Just from a gaming legacy standpoint.

i have the pc physical release of this game, it has a page in its book about how long it took to drive coast to coast in the beta, and the first release, it was significantly larger then it is now, it was due to some scaling on speed being wrong, but still it was amazing, it has a story that was also great

12:08 - I used to record hour-long videos back when I played The Crew 1 and I can see that sometimes I'd come across someone and you could drive with them for 2-3 hours. There was a text chat and probably also voice chat but they were both in the background much of the time. It was nice. I tried the second game and didn't like it, maybe it was how it felt to drive..Or the festival-esque treament it was given. I barely paid attention to that in Horizon, but I think it was just slightly worse in Crew 2.

As a fan of racing games I can tell you one thing, even in California the terrain is wildly differnt even with just a few hours of driivng. You could go from costal red woods, cities, farmland, even deserts. Spolier alert if they ever do a sequel to Far Cry Blood Dragon it definately needs to be in the outback....Imagine if they gave an Emu a machine gun..... and yet would not be the weirdest thing ubisoft has done either.

Beautiful video. I was 11 yo when this game came out and i started playing it thanks to my grandad who bought the game for me a couple of months after his launch. I spend so many hours on this game and i kinda grew up with it. When i heard about it's faith i feel like a part of my childhood had taken away from me and till this day i feel nostalgic about how games have changed their style. We start from a game with a well make characters, a story with a properly progression when you can go anywhere, do whatever you want if it is explore, racing, escaping from the cops to a boring, not progressive and souless festival. You do not have a lot of mission in the crew i admit that, but like you said, the main character was the map, the game was 90% about exploring the US and 10% about Alex doing his vengence things. I really hope the guys trying to bring back this game accomplish their mission🤞

The reason I never played the crew is because I can't stand the idea of getting invested into something and then having it taken away from me completely. I find that an untenable proposition. I am right with you here. I don’t care how good a game sounds or looks, if it comes with always online as a requirement just to play it comes into the world relying on the good will of people who only see the games they make as dollar signs to stay playable. It’s egregious. If your game requires an internet connection to play (especially if it’s a single player game) then you should not be allowed to charge people for it unless it comes with offline as a promised end of life update.

I think one of the biggest problems with the story and modern car manufacturers/game developers is from what I heard, manufacturers not wanting to be associated with “Illegal street racing” (now my information maybe off so please don’t bite me) but stories from the NFS or The Crew can’t be made anymore unless devs start making fake cars on some GTA type stuff because devs don’t want their grocery getters being involved in street stuff. It’s silly, but it I understand on one hand, but being that the games are entirely FICTIONAL, it’s a bit ridiculous. We can play any other game doing nearly anything we want, but god for bid a real life car shows up in a a game about racing said cars outside of a track

The crew 2 was a downgrade in almost every way (especially FFB for wheels), motorfest is a step in the right direction but the map is too small and the ffb still has some issues but its better. In my opinion the crew 1 also has better handling then crew 2 and motorfest but the cars in the crew 1 where a bit too light. The crew 2 and motorfest went the other way. Cars are to heavy and get pulled to the ground. The menus where so simple in the crew 1 as well. You could do everything in the menus while driving except for changing keybinds

I remember in the early days of the crew 2 when cars could drive up pretty steep rocks etc and then they removed it completely. I would recommend checking out motorfest when they have a free trial or its on sale. It's a step in the right direction when it comes to handling and vehicle headlights actually work in that game.
