The Last Duel (2021) - Movie Review 

Working on my video that includes this review rn, but I just HAD stop and find out what you thought of it because I freaking loved the film, needed my opinion validated, and you did not disappoint )) Affleck and Comer absolutely stole the show for me, and OMG the DUEL itself - so intense! Totally agree with everything you said.

This film surprised me in the best way possible. This is my second favorite of the year so far behind Pig.

I'm obsessed with history and Ridley Scott is one of ,of not my fav director. I'm beyond excited to see this!!looks so good. Ridley captures the visual and feeling of the time eras soooo well!! I hope he still plans on doing Gladiator 2.

loved this film! infuriating and very hard to watch in some places, but i do love it when movies can make me feel things. not something i’m desperate to rewatch at the moment but i’ll definitely be adding it to my collection just the same. one of my favorites of the year so far i think and here’s hoping jodie can snag that oscar nom! she earned it for sure. great review austin! glad you enjoyed it as much as i did!

I have never felt so seen watching a movie before and all of that is thanks to Jodie Comer’s masterfully nuanced and emotionally wrecking performance. My husband who rarely pays attention to movies was crying by the end of it. Her portrayal of Marguerite was so powerful.

Jodie comer as villenelle in killing eve is one of the best characters on TV excited to see her in this movie

Saw this movie today and gotta say I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. The action and the performances was great and the story told was so captivating. I do think some scenes they didn’t need to show us twice and it didn’t really change much and would of made the story move abit quicker but overall throughly enjoyed

I'm not surprised Scott managed to make a great movie about a duel: after all, he has already done it with his debut movie, The Duelists.

I can’t decide if the best thing about this is that the screenplay is written by Affleck, Damon and Nicole Holofcener, or that Ridley Scott is directing this movie, or that Dariusz Wolski is the cinematographer for this movie

Pretty much agreed with your review. However of all of the reviews I’ve seen/read no one is mentioning how “The Last Duel” resembles “Rashomon,” the Akira Kurosawa’s 1950 classic. If you Austin or anyone reading this hasn’t seen “Rashomon,” it’s a must see!

Just finished watching this, and honestly I've never been much of a fan of Adam Driver... until now. Goddamn the _range_ he displays in this film is amazing, great film overall, took a moment or two to hook me but once it did I was in deep.

I don't know if you know or just didn't mention it but this is based off a true story so that may have played into how they wrote it with certain characters. I loved this film, loved it. I didn't realize this even was Ridley Scott until the credits and then I was like, off course that's why it's so good. Spoiler I thought the other guy would win and she was done for. I thought the blaze was coming.

I wish I could of liked this. I thought it was emotionally void until the 3rd chapter and by then it was too little too late. Glad you liked it tho. Possibly rewatches will help. Sad as I usually love Ridley Scott.

This feels like an old-fashioned film, which i absolutely love. Its not been doing well in theatres which is a massive shame. Its such a breath of fresh air when compared to the avalanche of disposable MCU projects and its sad how modern audiences will watch avengers for the 500th time but not support films that are original, raw, and have a lot to say about society. I bet if matt damon and adam driver wore spandex suits and shot lasers at each other, this film would fare much better financially

This movie makes me ashamed I didn’t see in theatre.

It's interesting. The choice to label one of the perspectives as "the truth" I'm conflicted on. I understand why you kinda have to, you don't want to imply "it's just a perspective" because of the subject matter. And also the audience would want to know what the real truth is. Still it makes that part feel different because it's simultaneously subjective and objective.

Since Cannes this movies score on rt has gone from like 65 to 80%

The duel is INTENSE.

Driver was A squire, but not DAMON’S squire.

The movie is about a crime. The important perspectives came from the parties involved as there were no witnesses. You put the other character's perspectives in there and it will be even longer lol. This true story was a he said/she said incident back then. All in all the movie puts the audience in the same boat as those other characters but with the emphasis on the question, Who really is the victim here? I guess it's kinda like a trial movie with really cool action scenes ha. Great movie. Can't wait to see Gucci.

I had to do a double take when you said "jacques"...it's "jack". It's pronounced a bit differently in French (the "j" is soft, not "dj" as in English), but it's basically Jack.

I reall enjoyed this movie. It didn't feel long to me, I liked the pacing, we get three stories that while similar really aren't the same because everyone has their own perspective. I'd gove it an 8.5.

I just came home from watching this movie. I agree, the acting is amazing. However, I felt that too often, with the different perspectives, too much was merely repetitive and did not offer anything new. They could have trimmed twenty to thirty minutes off the movie, thereby making it more compelling. But man oh man, that "last duel" was awesome and worth the wait!!

I researched this true story while in college and I was not surprised that it would one day be made into a film. I was ALSO not surprised when the film was told with the woman’s story *SPOILER ALERT* being portrayed as the ‘Truth’ and you may not be surprised also that Adam Driver’s character, the real life human being whose guilt or innocence isn’t the point, only the messaging is, is portrayed as ‘Guilty’ in the movie. I had a debate with a woman (I am a woman too) that the innocence of Jacques Le Gris doesn’t matter, only the MESSAGING does, especially in light of the ‘Me Too’ movement and the ‘women must be believed’ movement. My argument back is that this ‘Messaging over Truth’ is a communist ideology and that every movie produced by a communist state told the message of the State to the people, truth or no truth. Her argument back was that the ‘Socially Responsible’ thing to do was ensure that the woman is believed in the movie. My return argument is that the ‘socially responsible’ thing to do is to tell the truth ESPECIALLY because this is true story and these human beings actually lived and walked this earth..this isn’t fiction where you can tell any story you want and sell any message you want…a man died to prove his innocence when in reality, if you research the history, he did not have to. It therefore came to zero surprise to me that this is exactly where the movie went to, despite historically, Jacques Le Gris was almost certainly innocent. He was willing to sacrifice his life to prove his innocence. Rest In Peace Jacque Le Gris; you were a victim of politics in 14th century France, you continue to be a victim of politics 600 years later. Your truth, the truth, it never mattered, now as it did not then.

I thought this movie sucked balls! I will say it was written well and acted well and the production value was very good but it was a hit piece on men. The whole focal point of the movie was rape. Even down to the reason the duel was going down was because the guy offended the man and not offended The Woman by raping her. I thought the movie was another example of this woke bull crap that's going on.

Driver usually delivers shit

I'm not surprised the film flopped, as it took the wrong approach. The film is called "the Last Duel," the climax of which is gonna be two guys fighting. You build up to that moment by fleshing out their relationship. That's what the book did. Jean Le Carouges was mostly portrayed as a sympathetic hero out to exact justice. You were deeply afraid for him and his wife. The film took a feminist angle and made Jean's wife the central focus, which was a well intentioned but structural mistake. I wish the filmmakers trusted their source material.
