I'm so honored to have the director's version of this movie! There was so much from the original version that was not shown but, this is even better! A little long but, better! :)
Great film, you'd never know it was made in 1987. However, PuYi was nothing like the driven, calculating, man portrayed in the film. If you read the book The Last Emperor by Albert Brachman, you'll see he was just a puppet all his life, and the only real power he ever had was the power to have his eunuchs flogged for his personal pleasure. His marriage to (Elizabeth) Wan Jun was never consummated, which is a real bummer, because she was FUCKING HOT in the photos.
A whole life being lied to, betrayed, used, separated from the loved ones and abandoned.... though living in high material standard. I don't know what a sad and hard life it could possibly be for him to lead.
Cixi was looking for another boy emperor to manipulate but died on the day she named him emperor. What a total waste on the life of an innocent little boy.
She killed the previous emperor because she knew her death was imminent. These have been proven by exhumation of the emperor's remains, his body shows high levels of arsenic, proving a large dose of arsenic administered at once.

I feel like the Imperial Court could have avoided so many issues if they had done the following: 1. Allowed his mother to come with him to the Forbidden City and continue to raise him. 2. Made Prince Chun his Regent until he was old enough to take power. 3. Allow him to travel outside the walls to see and be seen by the people.
0:55 this part really encapsulates the will of the northerners in those times Not the Chinese but the mongols and Manchus as well as banner people There is still fight to be made
The whole movie is very good! Pu Yi becomes the emperor after the Empress Dowager Ci Xi dies. he doesnt rule long because of the Chinese Revelution. His mother dies of druging herself of large amounts of Opium. it is very sad how he didnt really love his wives and consorts and his bad disisions for the Chinese Empire and how their is no more rule for china and he is not a king instead he is just a normal citizen. he lost riches etc.
@@romeforeverrher own son died without heir, so she had to choose a family member who was not the same generation aka Pu Yi's predecessor as Emperor of China, who ALSO died without an heir so she chose Pu Yi as next. Try to read biography of Dowager Empress Cixi by Jung Chang. It is good book.
@@helene4397 uh when did i deny this? you’re just trying to bring up something irrelevant to prove me wrong about something i wasn’t even talking about to make yourself look smart and me lol dumb. everybody talks, nobody listens.
The movie was far to sympathetic. He was a sadistic monster who liked to watch random servants beaten to death. He was also a genuine war criminal who collaborated with the Japanese occupiers in Manchuria in some of the most hideous crimes ever committed.
this comment is so reminiscent of old youtube and just internet in general, so much changed in 15 years. I feel like I'm looking at a piece in a museum and yet it's only a decade old comment.
Has anyone known why the mother of Puyi, Youlan, and in this case the actress who interpreted her, roll her eyes at 0:52? Is because of the opium she consumed or just something the actress made when filming?
