King Manoel is fondly remembered in the area. The garage where he got his Rolls Royce serviced is still in operation today. His mother was born in Twickenham

It's easy to forget that the King and Crown Prince killed in the attack were Manoel's father and brother. What terrible experience it must have been for him at only 18. For us it's history, but for the family it is a very personal tragedy.

Yes it must have been traumatic for him. No doubt he suffered in a similar way to Princes William and Harry

King Manuel II is a descendant of Queen Maria II of Portugal, born in Rio de Janeiro. Queen Maria II was daughter of D Pedro I, Brazil's first Emperor.

@@eltimbola19 the real story seems to be more complicated. According the succession laws Pedro IV of Portugal (Pedro I of Brazil) by proclaiming the independence of Brazil lost his trone in Portugal and his brother Miguel I was actually acclaimed King of Portugal. This led Pedro I of Brazil (no longer Pedro IV of Portugal according to Portuguese succession laws) to gather a huge force made of English, French and Spanish and invaded Portugal... The bloodiest civil war we suffered in Portugal. He won the war and his descendants actually kept the throne, until Carlos was assassinated. Later justice would be done, and the family branch of D. Miguel, brother of Pedro IV of Portugal (Pedro I of Brazil) is actually the recognised Royal Family and as such heads of the Royal of House of Braganza. All the respect for King Manoel, he was a great man and a great Portuguese; I wish we had leadership from someone like him instead of this republican corrupt cleptomaniacs we have now... But the legit King of Portugal bellongs to D. Miguel branch of the Braganza family. I am happy someone fixed this a few decades ago...

@@nmarques7885 They are indeed the heirs of the house Bragança, but they should not be considered heirs to the Portuguese throne, the separation of the crowns of Portugal and Brazil was santioned by king John VI, who became himself by title emperor de jure of Brazil, he signed his latter royal decrees has such, while Pedro was the de facto emperor of Brazil, upon John VI death a year latter (suspected poisoning and a few years ago testing of his remains proved this hipotese with large quantities of arsenic which fit the description of the agony of his final days) Pedro was the heir of the Portuguese throne, so the two crowns where once again unified, this was not possible so he decided to abdicate(it was possible because Brasilian law would only invalidate it in 1834, but politically impossible). The abdication made her daughter constitucional monarch of Portugal, she married her uncle. Miguel was a tradicionalist and did loose the civil war, her daughter regained the throne, but this is not true, Pedro who actually abdicated Brazilian imperial title did regained his crown, my evidence for this it's that his name and not his daughter was on the Constitution has being the one to proclaim it, and it refers to him has king. This constitution included the banishment clause which prohibited Miguel and his heirs from the crown of Portugal( Maria II heir was actually her brother Pedro II, emperor of Brazil, she however had many kids), by this the title of the House of Bragança does belong to them but not the title of King. A few years ago the foreign office did recognize them, but I despise that decision because it is unlawful, it wasn't an affirmation by the Portuguese assembly which is sovereign in matters such as this and therefore has no force in law, for the Assembly it would be illegal to do it, because the Republic is a prepetual clause in the Constitution and such declaration would declare the existence of a King, and there is none.

@@pedrorequio5515 The 'Carta Contitucional' written by the Marquee of Caravelas, Brazilian Minister of Justice. That's a funny one, so that's the document that legitimizes Maria I? And the previous laws of succession are trash ? I don't think so. Order has been reestablished. D. Duarte Pio is now the 'de facto' leader of the Royal House of Braganza.
@pedrorequio5515
@pedrorequio5515 3 года назад
@@nmarques7885 The previous laws are irrelevant in sight of a new order, in the old order the senior Branch still would not be Miguel's because the Senior Branch of the House of Braganza was that of Brazil, by male primogeniture. Actually both split, much in the same way Austrian Habsburgs split from the Spanish ones, which latter died out. Maria Gloria became queen of Portugal and Miguel and his heirs were banished, their right did not exist. I can't recognize that man has king of Portugal.

Manoel II was the last of Portugal's liberal, anticlerical, masonic, royal lineage. We still have our traditional, Catholic, royal lineage, that of King Miguel I. I am a traditional, Catholic, Portuguese, integralist, royalist.
@nmarques7885
@nmarques7885 3 года назад
Actually according to succession laws, Pedro IV lost the right to the Portuguese crown when he gave independence to Brazil. Regardless to say, while he was whoring in Brazil, his brother under Napoleonic occupation didn't left the country and got very beloved by the people (D. Miguel). D. Miguel throne was usurped by the Pedro IV which gathered a multi-national army (Brits, French and Spanish) to invade Portugal. He need 3 foreign countries to support him (Quadrupla Aliança) to steal the throne. No one cares about Pedro IV family branch. The Braganzas are the weakest dynasty of Portuguese history. Huge contrast between the real Kings who made this country always leading armies from the front line to the fancy 'evacuation' fans ;) D. Duarte is the 'de facto' Head of the Royal House of Brazança.

Dom Manoel II was from a German line of the Portuguese royal house. He was descended from Queen Maria II by her marriage to a prince of Saxony=Coburg. This line was not popular. Had the Portuguese succession remained with the male line of the House of Braganza, there might still ne a Portuguese king today.
