@@avecmoi9429 It's misery may not have been what one thinks, i.e. it seems likely it was in a state of shock and/or full of adrenaline which acts as a natural pain killer. Animals often seem to be effected by pain in a different way than how we would expect to be in the same situation. In my own experience I have a dog who barely noticed when part of his ear was bitten off by another dog, and another that got into a fight with a stray and wanted to keep fighting even as I held him back and he was bleeding from a hole in his head (thankfully not as serious a wound as it initially seemed).
@Ryodraco
@Ryodraco 4 года назад
@@avecmoi9429 No worries, though keep in mind I'm not exactly an expert. Another way to look at it is that animals seem a lot better at dealing with pain than people are (i.e. it's one of the issues that one runs into as a pet owner, as a pet often won't even exhibit signs of discomfort until an illness or injury has become severe). It can be helpful in general though to not anthropomorphize. Creatures often have quite different priorities, wants, feelings, etc. than humans do.

Great doc! Komodo is such a majestic creature, one of my fav animals. It's such a pity that many ppl hate them. They are not like smaller cats that catch smaller things and just bite through the spine and kill them immediately. I think that among the most humane predators are constricting snakes too, which kill prey relatively quickly by circulatory collapse. The pray just gets dizzy and passes out.

Very nice and rounded documentary. Most tourists stay too little and don’t have the time to experience the life of the dragon and the rest of the ecosystem. Also it is very striking how chill dragons are around humans, even when they are eating. A mammalian carnivore of the same size would constantly scan for threats and either leave or viciously attack. Komodo dragons seem much less dangerous than any Carnivora and even crocodilians.
@LivingZoology
@LivingZoology 3 года назад
Thank you very much for watching! We are happy that you like this documentary. You are right, it was amazing to spend more time on the islands. True, Komodo dragons are fully focused on prey when they feed! But it is worth to mention that they don't have any natural predators there so they are not so shy. The idea Komodo dragons hunt by wounding prey and then tracking it over a stretch of time is based on an outdated hypothesis about infection being the main killing mechanism; in reality, the prey that died slowly from infection were actually SURVIVORS of a dragon attack, with the infection coming from the external environment. Direct observations indicate that Komodo dragons try to kill/disable prey outright (via physical trauma and possible also via venom), rather than play the waiting game. Ironically, a good number of these observations come from the work of Dr. Walter Auffenberg, who came up with the infection hypothesis that contradicts many of his observations of Komodo dragons outright killing prey (one extreme example being that of a boar that was disemboweled in a few seconds). In the case of the deer kill you filmed, the wound on its leg was almost certainly inflicted by one of the dragons to start with, and likely only a short while (less than an hour) prior to the time when the filming started.
@LivingZoology
@LivingZoology 5 лет назад
Yes, we agree with you! That's how it was, the dragons attacked the deer and we got a call and came there at the time when the video starts. So they attacked it a short time before the scene we filmed. They play a waiting game mostly with the huge buffalos. It takes some time for the venom to start working on the prey.
@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 5 лет назад
Living Zoology Given that there are observations of Komodo dragons directly engaging buffalo, it’s possible (if not probable) that even with buffalo it’s less “waiting game” and more “buffalo escapes, dies anyways, dragons come across it later”. That’s how the infection myth spread in the first place.
@ramaastana
@ramaastana 5 лет назад
I once watched a new hypothesis on youtube which says that it is not bacteria infection that causes a prey dies slowly, but something in the dragon's venom (after the first bite) that prevents the prey's blood to clot. So, it says, the prey dies slowly because of unstopable bleeding.
@colinjava8447
@colinjava8447 5 лет назад
@@ramaastana That's what I was gonna say, the blood doesn't clot at the wound so the animal bleeds out over hours/days.
