Cassie is the perfect person to watch react to this series because she knows nothing about the game/story so it's all going to be a surprise PLUS she's already pulled in emotionally to the story which is the biggest strength of this show. Looking forward to the rest of this reaction series :)
Only this show has a small amount of infected. 3 episodes out if 8 so far. This show is human vs human. Cassie can do this all the shows Cassie named. 28 Days Later, World War Z, I am Legend, all have WAY more infected that The Last of Us tv series so far.
Man I feel so awful for her in all these zombie movies. Either she is a very good actor or actually is a kind soul who bonds with characters & on her emotional sleeve wishes them no harm. We need more people like this to counter gruff folks like me :) heh
It was the second game to make me cry. Difference was "I just started the game" to "Oh fuck. John Marston just died" after I invested a few weeks of spare time getting his life on the tracks (the less spoilery version).
@@kristofferolsen8973 Less spoilery?! Wtf just say Red Dead Redemption and people will understand. No reason to spoil something completely unrelated in the comments.
@@kristofferolsen8973 This man said "less spoilery version" by giving away the twist at the end of the entire first game. Whew, that's some hardcoded mental gymnastics if I've ever seen it.
Cassie So happy you're joining this crazy emotional ride. You can handle it. This show is amazing. This isn't star wars, but it might help you to have an emotional support Grogu to hold tight. 😉 during the show. RIP Sarah. The actress who played Sarah (Nico Parker) looks so much like her mom actress Thandie Newton.
That's her daughter? Wow, i thought that girl reminded me of someone. She the spitting image of her mother indeed. The face, her facial structure, she's just a bit more lightskinned than thandie. Well, i learned something new.
@@ghostofyourmom Sorry but you miss read my comment. I wrote RIP Sarah as in the character that died. I never said the actress Nico Parker died. I only said she looks like her actress mother Thandie Newton. No worries though
I literally said to myself, "oh no Cassie what are you doing?", when I saw the thumbnail. It honestly shows how much you've grown as a reactor. You handled yourself like a champ, and will be rewarded with a beautify acted, filmed, and written series. Storytelling at its finest.
Cassie is better than me cuz I literally fast forwarded scenes where I thought Infected would be😩🤣 Edit: Not just Infected, but any scene where I thought there'd be a jumpscare
I believe you can do this! I don't like to give even tiny spoilers like "Episode 44 made me cry" or "Episode 19 was the most incredible thing ever," because I believe even those types of spoilers can affect a reaction. The reactor goes into episode 44 expecting something sad, and because they're prepared, they just don't react the same as they would blind. So, all I will say is this: If you stick with it, I think you'll be glad you did.
Except that everyone was talking about how great the B/F episode was, from those that were able to watch it before the general viewing audience and it didn't diminish it at all. The B/F episode is one of those rare episodes that exceeds even the mightiest of accolades and no amount of praise for it will diminish it, whatsoever.
Cordyceps is a real fungus and it acts very similar to as described. It only takes over insects, though. Mainly ants. In reality, cordyceps spreads using tiny spores but those spores can coat something entirely, so you'd have to walk around in a haz-mat suit, like the doctor was wearing, and go through a very thorough decontamination whenever you wanted to remove the suit. If they had the spores in the series, humans wouldn't have any hope of surviving, so it's transmitted mainly through bites and they have the tendrils instead of spores in the show. It really is a nightmare idea, but, thankfully, the fungi capable of this kind of thing have shown no sign of adapting to higher temperatures. They do try to make it as realistic as possible, though, so the whole infected thing can be truly terrifying. Luckily, they are part of the story, but the focus is on the people. There are whole episodes without any infected in them. The first couple of episodes are so scary because they're setting everything up for the premise of the series. The stories of the people, though, are on the same level as the Titanic movie. If you enjoy that kind of story of love and friendship, then you will definitely enjoy this series. Please, stick with it. I think you'll really enjoy it in the long run.
Also, even if fungus could infect us someday, it wouldn't have the ability to control our brains as efficiently as depicted. I saw a quote, "like a cab driver trying to pilot the ISS." lol I read a novel that depicted this a little more realistically. There was violence, but only because people's brains were shutting down and it caused a subset of the population to go wonky. No monsters, but definitely a total breakdown of society.
@@beetlebob4675 Cordyceps doesn't actually affect the brain. In the ants it infects, it surrounds the brain with a kind of web, but doesn't actually touch the brain. The fungus, in reality, is able to control a 6-limbed creature well enough to make it climb. With the brain bypassed and only some of the most basic functions of the human body being used, an infected human might very well move like they do in the game and the show. Your story is actually less realistic, since Cordyceps completely bypasses the brain, rather than destroying it
@@beetlebob4675 They aren't zombies in this, either. They're very careful to call people "infected" rather than zombies. That's part of what's so creepy about the whole thing. Considering the way the fungus acts with ants, it could very easily do this if it could infect humans. That's the only thing keeping this nightmare scenario pure fiction. They don't infect humans.
@@psychokitty71 I know they weren't zombies in TLoU, I was simply stating that in the novel I read, the fungus didn't turn people into disfigured monsters.
Joel did not say anything (no goodbyes) to Tess because he was blocking every feeling, he needed all his strength to push forward and do what needs to be done to survive.
I've played the game like 6+ times and that opening scene with Sarah never fails to make me cry.. Like cry.. The show does a good job at translating it to live action. :(
I also played the game so so many times, even completing it without dying. The show is such a treat by following the game at the right moments and diverting at other times.
I love the opening to episode two for one simple reason- what makes it unique & shocking is that in most movies & shows it's the military that's all "bomb everything," but here it's the scientist saying it. She asks pointed questions and makes quick calculations based on her experience and the answers and she knows that mankind is doomed
The writing and attention to detail in this series is incredible. Yes, the infected are creepy and terrifying, but they are only a small part of the overall story. At times, the story will make you cry, because it is so well written. I'm nearly 50, and on a couple of occasions I have had tears in my eyes.
It's amazing, right? The infected are so effective at being terrifying that you don't even realize they aren't present in the last half of the show, because they made such an impression on your psyche in the first half that you understand intuitively that they are an ever present potential threat in the background that could always pop out at any moment... even if they don't.
25:25 was honestly the most terrifying conversation I've heard in a movie or TV show in a long, long time. Not every day you could FEEL the fear through the screen.
Agreed! I've seen every episode & to me the scene with the mycology professor is the most chilling. "Bomb this city and everyone in it." Plus the fact that the news was talking about the events in Jakarta in Ep. 1. Masterful.
Tess was the lead character in a show called Fringe. It's kind of like the Twilight zone meets X-files, with an awesomely entertaining crazy, mad scientist thrown in. I highly recommend it 😀
Introduced my fiancé to the Fringe as well! She loves it just like I did and it’s great to see her get so invested into the story just like I did when I first saw the series. Anna Torv is a solid lead actress! She was also great in Mindhunter. Too bad it didn’t get picked up for a third season.
For many gamers, this is one of the best stories told in a very long time, for me nothing has come close to this story for the last 10 years. So glad you are doing this. This show is not made to please an audience, it's made to tell a story, and that is what makes it so special and good. This franchise, both games, and the show is a masterpiece if you take it as a whole, I always tell people it didn't give me what I wanted at all, but it gave everything I needed
you remain one of my favorite reactors. I've seen so many reactions at this point to that first episode but none of them brought me back to my first time seeing the opening and Sarah's death like yours did. I felt every single emotion all over again as if it were the first time. you truly react with your entire heart and soul and I love you for it. yes, this show can get very dark, I won't lie to you about that. it also has it's beautiful moments and at its core, it's about human relationships and how they can save us in more ways than one. I think you can make it through because the beautiful story that is being told is totally worth it, imo. thanks for another fantastic reaction, Cass. you're amazing! ❤
The jumpscares get less as the story progresses. I hope you continue this. It's an amazing story. First time watching your reaction and I really enjoyed it! I hope you keep watching The Last of Us!
Tess is Anna Torv. She was the star of a J J Abrams show called Fringe. Great show that you could react to. Walter Bishop is THE MAN!! Watch and you'll understand
The most exciting part of the first episode for me is when you briefly see Syracuse, NY on Joel's map, because nothing important ever happens in Syracuse, NY so appearing on a map for a split second in a TV show is, like, a really big deal.
At the end of episode 2, the "kiss" Tess is infected and already losing control.. The infected guy is able to sense she's infected, which is why he doesn't attack her. He's helping the infection take over and with the last bit of her that's left she's able to get that lighter to light.. I hope you decide to continue watching, It's not an easy journey. But, I believe it's worth it. :)
I'm sure someone mentioned it, but part of this series was shot in Edmonton. They didn't have to do much set decoration in downtown Edmonton to make it look apocalyptic.
The movie from your childhood with a young Patrick Dempsey was Outbreak, 1995. It's the same director as In The Line of Fire with Clint Eastwood and Air Force One, so the guy has a good track record! Outbreak was always one of my favorites and seems like it may be even scarier and more relevant today for obvious reasons! Been a long time viewer and a huge fan of you and your sister, sorry it took me so long to become a patreon, but this video finally pushed me into doing it. I'm so glad you're tackling this series. I think you will find that it focuses a lot more on story, characters and getting you in the feels, rather than just more monsters, gore, and jump scares.. but those are still part of the show, though nothing too extreme. Meanwhile, the final episode comes out tonight and I am super excited!
No spoilers - Episode 3 is by far the best episode of television I have seen in probably 20 years without a doubt. I haven't played the game but am enjoying every ounce of this series. The acting, directing, sets, just everything. This is not a happy fun story however the story is absolutely fantastic and driven by every character on screen.
The main consensus as to why Tess didn't fight back at the end is cause if she made any sudden movements, they'd all swarm her and she wouldn't have been able to start the lighter
It's fun watching people's reactions to this show. Meanwhile, the game had us all just as captivated playing it on my Playstation 4 years ago. The adaptation to the show works as well so I'm happy with the final result and casting.
It took less than 30 minutes for the entire world to fall in love with his daughter Sarah, then to be heartbroken. This is one hell of a series Cassie, and definitely worth toughing it out. It's frightening and heart wrenching at times, but unforgettable and very well made. It might be a lil tough for you at times, but you can do it, and I promise you'll love it and be thankful for continuing. Your reaction was priceless, the perfect person for this series cuz your coming in blind, didn't play the game and don't know what's gonna happen next. Look forward to the next episodes and getting thru it with you.
Tess didn't 'let' that infected kiss her. She no longer had control over most of her body. That's why she couldn't get the lighter to light. The fungus was taking over. Her finally getting it was the last 'push' of Tess being herself.
No if she fought it woulda used violence. And the lighter didn’t work cause they do that. Especially after the water hotel lobby scene. She bought time till it worked while fighting the infection with last bit of her mind. Hero shit.
Hey, Cassie, about halfway through your reaction of the first episode. The infected are not zombies, zombies are reanimated dead people, the infected not infected by a virus, remember the first scene about the man on the TV show talking about a fugas infection that keeps its host alive and takes them over. That is what the infected are, alive but infected with a fungus
Yes Joel and Tommy are both veterans which is why they had their shit together in the situation and why joel had ptsd, along with the death of his daughter, by a soldier, which he used to be.
Joel didn’t tell Tess he loves her because he didn’t love her… just before that she says to him “I never ask you for anything, I never asked you to feel the way I feel”. She had feelings for him, but because of Sarah’s death he won’t allow himself to open up to anyone. He knew he could trust her because of her feelings, but that’s as far as he would go. Tess didn’t fight the infected person because she couldn’t risk it becoming aggressive towards her and stop her infighting the lighter. Keep going with this series, yes there are scares along the way, but the story is a powerful one. Those of us that played the game this is adapted from all say the same… it’s one of the best video game stories ever! And they stay a good 95% true to the game, making this series just as good.
I loved this first upload, and I am SO excited to join you on the rough road ahead. You've grown so much over the years, and I'm glad! It means that I can share this show (easily one of my absolute favourites), based on my #1 favourite video game, with you 😁
FYI, this is as close to impossible as you can get to actually happening. The fungus in real life is very specfic to insects and fungal infections don’t quickly spread like this. Definitely scary to imagine though
What amazes me is that computer games have developed so far from blocky 8bit graphics to today, that a TV show is happy to adapt it because the story and world are that complex.
Would it surprise you to learn that this show was filmed entirely in lovely and peaceful Canada? :) The entire series was filmed in and around Calgary. Most of us here play "Name That Setting" while watching the show - trying to identify which neighbourhoods and structures we've spotted. It's hard because they spent a LOT of money making Calgary (and area) looking very, very dystopian.
After figuring out where the fungus originated from, go check in how many instances they dodged infection in the opening of the first episode - every single time they didn't eat cookies, cake and pancakes they didn't eat from the contaminated flour.
Yeah!! Last of us prepare popcorn and emotions (plus sadness) because you enter one of the best series that has been released and that already left emotions in the spectators
Because I am familiar with the games, I tried very hard to not get attached to Sarah. But Nico Parker's performance made that impossible. Unauthorized entry into a quarantine zone means you got in without going through security and being scanned for infection. Thus you could bring infection into the quarantine zone. Unauthorized exit from a quarantine zone means you have a way out, and most exits can also be an entrance, thus could bring infection into the quarantine zone. When they brought the child in who collapsed outside the quarantine zone, behind the lady who was talking to him there was a sign listing how long from a bite to "full infection" based on where the bite was. A bite on the foot, furthest point from the brain shows 12-24 hours. If someone snuck in, wasn't caught but was bitten, you could have an infected turn up at some random location in under a day, and by the time FEDRA (Federal Emergency Disaster Response Administration I think it is) becomes aware, you could have an outbreak putting the entire quarantine zone at risk. Public execution is the punishment for the unauthorized entrance or unauthorized exit, both so you won't do it again, and to emphasize the penalty for those considering trying. Remember the beginning of episode 1, there were reports of a major incident in Jakarta? But it was in Texas already by the time that news report was airing. FEDRA school is an orphanage and and a heavily guarded training facility for future soldiers. Where would Ellie be safer as an infant? Moving around with the Fireflies, or in a stable, guarded orphanage? Unfortunately, I can not assure you this is not possible. A huge amount of it is based on science. It's kind of "If we change this one factor" what may be the outcome. Cordyceps can't survive in a host with an internal temperature about 94F/34.4C the average human body temperature is 98.6F/37C, but if the world temperature average increased a few degrees, Cordyceps might have to adapt to survive in a few degrees higher temperatures, at which point, it would be possible for it to survive in a human host. 38:36-38:38 "Why didn't he say something, like, 'I love you' or..." He probably hasn't said that, to anyone in 20 years. She never asked him to feel what she felt, she never asked him for "anything" and she just dropped this on him, hid that she had been bitten in the museum, and was pushing to finish the job before she ran out of time. It would have been painful, and to him probably would feel like it came across as hollow, if he said something like that, now, when it would be gone in minutes, so saying it, if he felt it, he should have said it long ago, saying it in that moment would be to devalue it. (Me, psychoanalyzing Joel/Tess. Complete amateur in this matter I am). 38:56-38:58 the fungus already has some control over about half her body, what can she do? It's taking everything she has to force her hand to keep trying to light the lighter. Cassie... Personal observation... You seemed so very timid about 'scary' as I reflect on your reactions over the time I've watched your reactions, from the beginning. You are doing magnificent.
I remember playing the game 10 years ago and being blown away at how incredible it was. Never thought there would ever be a series that does it justice but I'm now being blown away at how well they've portrayed the game.
They do bomb the city of Jakarta. That's part of what you hear about at the beginning of episode one when Tommy mentions Jakarta. But, by that point, it was already too late. The fungus had already spread through the food supply and the global supply lines and had made it around the world.
Stick with it Cassie. The story is brutal but the writing, direction, and performances are stellar. Pascal is excellent as usual, but Bella Ramsey (Ellie) just gets better with each episode. Interestingly, they were both on Game of Thrones.
the Cordiceps fungus is actually quite real. it mostly takes over insects & controls them like steering a car. the scenario is quite plausible. not what you want to hear but it's true.
Did you know that because Pedro was in this series his body was not in the last series of The Mandalorian, only his voice. Your reactions are the best on RU-vid
I'm SO excited that you're reacting to this show! As others have said, it gets a bit less jump scary. The clickers (as those horrifying sounding ones are called) are the worst for me. This show is beautiful and devastating, but SO well acted, written, and directed. I sincerely hope you continue, I can't wait to watch them! ❤
I've been avoiding most reactions to this series, but seeing Cassie was doing it I had to bite the bullet and watch, and wasn't disapointed. Ellie's actress is Bella Ramsey, like Pedro Pascal, she was in Game of Thrones, and played Lyanna Mormont, the Lady of Bear Island. She's been in a few other things, but that's where most know her from. Also, the reason why Tess let the infected get her like that is because she was already infected. Her humanself is fighting against her infectedself and it's need to spread, it's also why the other infected also didn't just attack her, it knew she was already infected and was "helping" the infection to spread faster. It's also why she struggled to ignite the lighter, because the infection was already taking hold of her and trying to prevent her from killing them.
I was (happily) surprised to see you begin watching this series! It, and the cast, are excellent. I’m one of the non-gamers, just here for the story...yes, it’s dark...but so worth it. You should make your sister watch it with you. Strength in numbers! 😁
So, the movie they were watching around the 6 minute mark was "Curtis and the Viper 2". It's not a real movie. It's something of an easter egg for fans of the game that the show is based on, as one of the characters in the game mentions watching that movie.
Whoever told you this series is not as scary as stranger things was joking 😃 me speaking as someone who never played the game but I'm hooked on this series ! Anyways, Enjoy and good luck ☺️
I’m guessing they were trying to say stranger things has scarier monsters, (which, tbh I think the demogorgon would win against a clicker, but the mind flayer was scariest to me personally) and I think maybe a few more sudden jump scares whereas this is thematically more dark snd scary.
Believe it or not cordycept zombies are one of the 23 zombie variants the DOD made a zombie plan out in the USA. It started out as a fun little thought experiment. Now it's an official military protocol.
Don't worry Cassie, all your questions will be answered, just wait. I'm sure you will love it because it's well written and acted. Pedro and Bella are amazing.
I’m so happy you’re doing this series. I’d never played the game before watching this. It’s drawn tears from me throughout the series and that’s usually like getting blood out of a stone.
also, this series/infection is based on a rea life fungus virus that infects ants. they turn into a zombie ant with a fungus branch that grows out of their head.
It is too late, Cassie. You probably should have turned back. But, I think you’ll make it. No, I believe you will make it, right to the end! This will be an epic reaction video.😊
Yay! Wasn't expecting this but I'm SO here for it! You were the last of my regular react people who hadn't joined The Last of Us train, now the set is complete! I hope you'll ride the train all the way to the end, I'm so looking forward to seeing your reactions. Have tissues ready though. Every episode. It's actually less horror/scary than it is emotionally draining. The story isn't really about zombies, it's about love lost and found again at the end of the world. The day the world ended, Joel Miller's heart was turned to stone. For him to ever accept love and family back into his heart again would be... an epic journey! Stick with it. It's not an easy watch, but like Chernobyl or Band of Brothers, it's an experience not to be missed, even if it's difficult. FEDRA: the exact acronym escapes me but it's something like Federal Emergency Disaster Relief Association. Basically it's the government organization for plagues and hurricanes and earthquakes and stuff, meant to go in and help people in distress during natural disasters. But as this disaster never ended, they eventually supplanted the normal government and took all authority for themselves, in the name of keeping people "safe", of course. But power is... well, you know. Good intentions (from some of them) perhaps at the start, but after 20 years of that hell world... I remember years ago my friend John, who is a gentle spirit like you, started playing the game and he called me about it and my first response was: "Ohhh boy, John playing The Last of Us. Did you survive the first 20 minutes?" He did, but only barely. Testament to how amazing and compelling the story is that he kept going, especially as he has two daughters about that age himself. Don't be daunted! We're here with you! :D
In real life it is called FEMA, but I suppose it was renamed in the post-apocalyptic world. So is it correct to say that no central government exists anymore? FEDRA in each QZ runs itself and in between is pretty much lawless no man's land?
