Technically he did that at the end in Jackson already, especially when Ellie cam back for him and he was holding her hand, which pretty much solidified it. Kinda why I hate people calling the last episode a filler. It showed why Ellie would not leave Joel, and why she has this fear of ending up alone. A backstory about the main character is everything but a filler.
From a filmmaking standpoint, the reason for focusing on Ellie's face rather than the violence itself is because the emotional impact of the violence on her is what is important in the scene. Putting the camera on the knife entering the body repeatedly would be gratuitous and purely for shock value. Violence and gore just for the sake of it "because it's HBO" would be both lazy filmmaking and less effective. It was the right choice from the director.
Absolutely. I loved that they cut to a wide shot and then he buries the knife into that guy's chest. I just admired the hell out of the way they shot all the violence this episode.
It wasn't different in the video game, Jaby - the David murder scene was almost identical. They didn't need to show him getting chopped up because it wasn't about him but rather about Ellie losing a part of her innocence.
Pedro in the torturing scene, Bella in all of her scenes, Scort Shepherd as David the entire episode, Troy Baker as James, Pedro and Bella at the baby girl scene. The episode full of UNREAL acting. Like W O W
The acting was amazing here. Props to everyone. I thought the casting for David was phenomenal. One thing that just cant be matched was Nolan Norths VA in the original. Something about that whispery tone always freaked the shit out of me. But even so this guy was an amazing David. Great villain turn. I think when we watch this back one day and have to compare David to say...Kathleen...it will just make him look even better.
You never saw the brutality of David’s death in the game either…. The fire scene was almost identical. In both mediums… David’s not the focus there. I always felt like the focus in that scene is Ellie’s collective sense of fear & rage & grief & anguish & loneliness & will to just survive; coming to the fore and she let it out in that moment. Orphan. Fedra. Riley. Marlene. Tess. Sam. Henry. Joel. She doesn’t even know if Joel’s still alive at this point. “I’m scared of ending up alone”. The poor girl has been through it and then some.
I'm glad I've never played the game. I'd rather not know the story and be mind blown by the show itself. Ellie's sob when Joel tried to console her - I can't. Bella really nailed it.
You'd still be by how well it is done and all the details, references and foreshadowing within the episodes, even for things about the sequel, which none of you will ever get without re-watching it after you know both games.
This is the most engaging and thrilling episode so far. Bella is perfection as Ellie and Scott Shepherd did a fantastic job as David. Pedro gave a really emotional moment with Bella in the end
@@Blinkptx yeah but the episode was so fast, everything happened like pew pew pew. David is the guy who send the men could have been revealed like in the game but it was delivered so fast. And Ellie to in this episode all did was shout. Ashley's performance in the game was miles better. I was enjoying Bella till this episode
@@anubhav7999 Yeah exactly, the more this series is progressing the more I feel the game did it better. The actors' acting/performance is phenomenal, it's just the way things are playing out in series don't feel as impactful as the game.
The way Bella stumbled to speak properly when Ellie is supposed to see Joel. That felt real ! That's some next level acting right there. It felt so damn natural. Damn, they're gonna sweep Emmys !
Bella did awesome especially in the ending of the episode when Joel and her reunite, she sort of tries to explain what happened, like she says "He- he tr-" but she couldn't get the words out and just embraces him.
I was so on edge and invested this whole episode, it was amazing! I was so proud of Ellie for doing what she had to do to survive, it's character development as it took a grave toll on her by the end. I'm so sad/nervous and excited for the next episode!
Joel did teach her about covering her tracks. She mentioned it in the “kin” episode when he fell asleep and she took second watch. She was just desperate and scared here so she wasn’t thinking. Plus it wouldn’t have mattered, they knew she was nearby and obviously taking shelter in that little suburb with the injured guy.
An underrated piece of dialogue is when after they capture Ellie, David says “you’re hungry for vengeance? deliver it.” Which kind of alludes to the fact that they’re cannibals
I think the father was killed by joel and the others brought his body back to their hq, and then the preacher took advantage of that fact to eat his body. He used a plausible excuse of the ground being too cold to dig up to bury him to eat him instead.
@@winatalee6947 maybe eaten or maybe not depends. Judging by the way the women said what is that ? Makes me think she is one of the few who don’t know they are eating human meat. Also possibly the man who Joel killed is what it really was.
Yeah thats a great little detail I didnt even notice. We cant bury him yet....because hes hanging like a cow in a butcher shop back in the lodge. So freaky.
I love how Achara is so intelligent. LOL even i didn't know penicillin comes from fungus. Loved the little callback Bella uses "luck had to run out sooner than later." same line used by Tess when she died.
Great episode adaptation from the game. Imo it's a bittersweet moment in the story. This is where ellie kinda loses her last bit of innocence n at the same time Joel embraces himself being a father figure to ellie. Side note; every actor in every episode needs to be at least nominated for an acting award
@@advait35 No, it's a dumb question because asymptomatic carriers of anything *are* nonetheless infected. That's what makes them carriers. They may not exhibit any symptoms of whatever it is that they're carrying, but they're still infected. Conversely, it's been a key plot point in this series that Ellie is definitely *not* infected, which means she plainly can't infect anyone else. She's not an asymptomatic carrier. She's immune.
@@halamander1112 They haven't really established that 100%. She still shows up on scanners. There's still evidence of it growing in her arm, even if it eventually stopped. Of course, there is an explanation for some of this.
@@advait35 I definitely have been thinking about that. It had me thinking about 28 weeks later, where that mother and her two kids were immune but they could still infect other people.
Jaby, the plane crash where the passengers had to eat the dead was Alive, as you said. However, it happened in 1972 in the Andes Mountains between Uruguay and Chile. They were marooned for 77 days before two members of the Old Christian Rugby team Roberto Canessa, and Nando Parado walked out of the mountains to instruct rescue forces where the rest of the 14 survivors were.
They crashed in Mendoza (Argentina). There's a whole big country between Uruguay and Chile... Argentina. Uruguay is where they played rugby before the crash.
Probably one of my favorite episodes. I was so tense the whole time and just had this really uneasy feeling. David was utterly disgusting. Bella was amazing- her best acting yet. I definitely teared up at the end😢 P.S. I totally had the feeling they brought the guys body back and ate him- that’s why David claimed they couldn’t bury his body
I do still believe the village was eating the dad at the dinner scene. He was killed by Joel but they probably preserved the meat to feed the village 😬
7:58 You can see she's a little hesitant before eating the food. Also, I think they add the sounds of utensils to make it feels like 'gobble up' intentionally. Genius.
As someone who hasn't played the game, as relieved as I was that Ellie had gained the upper hand and killed David, I was also absolutely devastated for her in that moment. Any innocence she still had was destroyed by what David did and attempted to do to her and by the fact that he forced her to hack him to death to avoid it. That guy was a monster. Joel's a weapon. The way he took out the men left behind to search for him, despite being wounded and nowhere near fully fit, was epic and that interrogation scene.... well, let's just say he wasn't messing around. I totally expected that Joel would burst in at the last minute to save Ellie, but I'm so glad they actually had Ellie save herself. She went beast mode. She's a true survivor. She is Joel's daughter. Can't fault this episode. Can't wait for the finale.
I suspect Joel is willing to move heaven and earth in order to ensure he doesn't fail, effectively, his second daughter. Now that they've bonded and looked out for each other like loving family members, Joel would rather die than lose Ellie. And I don't blame him. Not after he had to watch Sarah pass away in excruciating pain in front of him. What that does to a loving parent is, for the most part, beyond devastation. No parent should have to bury their child.
I'm so happy for Troy to have this on his resume. It could lead to bigger live action roles for him and although he is the king of voice acting in games I really want him to spread his wings some more
If you go back to the Kansas City episode, I made a comment on another site about the parallels to the French Revolution: after killing the royals/aristocrats/nobles, there was a subsequent purge and the survivors were pretty much the wily people who knew how to game the factions. David is a wily survivor who managed to find sheep to ensure his own survival and his aberrant behavior would not be challenged by his followers. Joel/Ellie have been established as independent, never fitting in with a culture or a group or even each other until episode 7. It took this traumatic experience to bring them together even closer but we'll see how Ellie copes with the aftermath. Joel hasn't been doing too well after his daughter's death and that was decades ago.
I originally had the same thought about Ellie trying to cover her tracks when leaving the first meeting with David and Buddyboi, but I think it probably wouldn't have been feasible. When she originally happened across them, she was running through the forest to chase the wounded deer. To cover those tracks, she'd have to backtrack along that same path, covering not just her own footprints, but also the deer's, as well as any blood trail it left. Then there's any branches it would've broken along the way in its panicked flight. It's not an impossible thing to try, but she was also under a heavy time crunch to get the medicine back to Joel.
Bro that last part when Balla's Ellie Came out and then attacking (not knowingly) Pedro's Joel then Later on Realizing it's him with her voice and face of Relief and Calmness, I actually Teared up a bit cause you can actually feel her trauma and when she finally sees Pedro's Joel and Pedro's Joel Comforts her like a Daughter-Figure, Its just Amazingly Touching
We finally got Daddy Joel officially back, but it was sad what happened with Elle had to go down to get him there. I actually chuckled a little when Achara said "break his fingers, do something" when David was creeping on Elle at the cage. Happy that his got a big helping of karma later on. This episode hit me in the heart at the end after everything that happened. Enjoyed the reaction. 👍👍✌ out
Where the fuck are the people who said bella wasn't a good pick for ellie? , It doesn't always have to be how similqr the actor looks to the character in the game.
ppl also forget... just because a girl may look like the character... doesnt mean that girl is a good actor. As someone who played the game, i was okay with the casting cuz i knew they got the best actors for the role
He did teach her about covering her tracks...in the beginning of the episode 2 episodes ago, Joel fell asleep..she told him after he woke up she did like he taught her and doubled back on her tracks..he did teach her...but in the heat if the moment all you are thinking about is getting back to Joel ASAP...
When i hear James aka Troy Baker speak, i can't help but hear Joel from the game. It's a slightly lighter tone but totally sounds like Joel ;p Such peculiar and recognizable voice :P
27:00 It's like he repressed this darkness in himself, rather than confronting and surpassing it. As the drama and conflict unfolded, it broke free and consumed him.
This episode was incredible, Scott Shepherd was terrifying and creepy as hell as David and honestly his performance matched Nolan North for me, Bella gives probably their best performance of the entire show and with Ellie’s terror at David assaulting her was palpable and truly traumatising, seeing Troy as James was so cool and the fact that the show included him at all is amazing but of course Pedro is as awesome as ever as Joel and his brutality was on full display in this episode which matches perfectly to the game
The number of head injuries Ellie suffered in this episode. falling on her face in the snow, falling head first off a horse, and slammed head first into the cell bars. damn, the girl has a thick head.
Another awesome video you two. I agree with Achara " I hate the cold!" LOL sucks to be in the northeast in winter! though I hear Nor Cal is not to hot right now either! I loved this episode. So damn happy to see Ellie take on the bad guys and come out on top. Keep up the great work and please stay safe! Excelsior! Heff
its the preachers eyes, the actor did a good job at portraying a deep sense of foreboding just by using his eyes. He simply had to look at someone and you understood, here is a killer, a real killer.
They were eating the girl's father who died... and that guy had the biggest plate of it. That's why he gaslighted her about it being to cold to dig, there was no body to bury.
U r reaction is the most real genuine reaction in the internet i have seen. Everyone is fake or just i felt like they are pretending , I think u mastered the art of reaction video in the internet. I'm not kidding really.
Smart Achara.. Penicillin does come from mold, and while it's labeled as a synthetic drug now and has been for quite some time, that's only because instead of removing it from naturally growing penicillin mold they now grow the mold themselves and then separate it.. which technically means it's synthesized and thus listed as a synthetic drug... But yea, its created by mold, and mold is a fungus.. so as I said, very smart Achara (I'm not calling myself smart in a round about way, Ive just spent the last fifteen years or more of my career in pharmaceuticals, so it's an area I'm familiar with is all).
I read that bella's voice in that scene where she yells at them for the deer, it was -17 while filming and she was just cold. Apparently that's why she sounded "older". ...now I live in Canada and I hate the cold. Props to them for filming in that AND THE BABY GIRL AT THE END... MY HEART
Troy Baker/James whom voiced Joel in the game, gets a cameo. Nice. Later on Ashley Johnson the voice of Ellie will get one as well. Now when Troy/Joel got married his best man was Grog/Travis Willingham from the Legend of Vox Machina. Furthermore Ashley/Ellie is Pike Trickfoot. Troy Baker also voiced the father of the twins in LoVM
There is no episode that felt like filler every moment in this series so far had a purpose to the overall story I far on another note I have noticed especially in this series Jaby getting more emotional than I am use from him especially strange since he has experience with the game for me it makes it worst if I know what is coming.
Jaby: "I love how we got all the beats in this episode: Being scared for Joel, being scared for Ellie" Me: "Being scared of Joel, being scared of Ellie" I really love how both of their violent sites came out as well in this penultimate episode.
Jaby was so grossed out he used a phrase from Pinky in Pinky and the Brain. Love it! Ellie chopping wood all over David's face feels good no matter how you see it. OMG, this episode was great!
I was wondering how dark they were gonna make the *DARKEST* part of the game. And yeah, they did not hold back. They made David in his last minutes even more disturbing than the game made him. And when David tells Ellie that she has a violent heart he had NOOOO idea. I would honestly put her near the top of the list of the deadliest people in tv or video games. But that scene of Joel hugging Ellie and calling her baby girl still hits hard. Also I kinda wished that Troy Baker was cast as someone far more important than James. Still he was amazing and he had an awesome death scene, and it was darkly funny that video game Joel was killed by tv Ellie. Also wish that they gave Ellie her trademark bow and arrow, but hopefully we get that in Part 2.
Talking about the violence in 27:40, I've noticed that we only see the violent stuff when we are with Joel, like in episode 1 when he kills the soldier in front of Ellie but then in episode 4 we are behind the wall with Ellie when Joel kills that kid in Kansas, same in episode 5 when Joel kills the snipper we don't see him shoot, we cut to Ellie, Henry and Sam hidding behind the car. We don't actually see Sam or Henry die too, we have cut scenes to Ellie's reaction and Sam's body in the ground and the blood running. With all that in mind, I think not seen David's body at all once Ellie knocks him it's very consistent. She's blinded by fear and anger in that moment, I don't think she is even properly watching what she's doing, she just keep swinging over and over out of pure adrenaline.
Joel killed the girl's dad (Alex, I think they called him - likely the bat-wielding attacker at the uni in ep6) - and David had the body served up to his flock in that eating scene (or he's one of the bodies 'prepped' that Joel comes across (hence the excuse not to bury the body earlier in the episode) - that's my understanding anyway. Great episode - can't believe this season's nearly over already...
I think he killed a combo of ways... he killied strays that came across their compound, or he killed those who challenged him(that esplained why they submit to him so naturaly and why they acept his impose leadership, cause the rest of the villagers were to weak and cowardly to try to defy him openly and take over the clan, also it was showned by him getting his own food plate plenty full, while the rest were racioned, and it seem he would chose any woman he may like for himself and they all just accept it) and they also killed and ate any one that died by accident or while confronting other survivers... so most all the one who had the best deal from all this was DAVID.
Also, while I'm not sure that David killed the bodies they were using as food, I wouldn't put it pat him either. David definitely strikes me as a "the ends justify the means" type of person.
The dude Joel killed at the University was brought back and that's why they couldn't bury him "until spring". That's what I assume, although there's a disparity between the guys at the school with clubs and the hunters that all have guns going after ellie. Not sure how those things correlate
I love this show, I understand the show is bout the people and the infected are a backdrop, but I mean they set up this really cool thing in episode two, maybe it's a budget thing or just a story decision but I would've loved to have seen more infected conflicts.
