I think they planned for the show to cover the whole first game and DLC. I think it seems like they're progressing slowly because they spend a lot of time on character interaction, skip a lot of movement and combat, and spent some time world building early on. If you look at the plot summary on the wiki page for the game, there's not that many plot points left to hit and five episodes to do it.

YESSSSS GUYS FUCKING FINALLY I’VE WAITING FOR THIS ONEEEEE! Istg this was my favourite episode, it made the gamer part of me SO FCKING HAPPY they dis so many parts exactly like the game, the watcher part of me was also happy. I really liked the changes they made, I swear they have not missed ONCE. Pedro Pascal and Bella Rampsey are PERFECTLY casted, and that's comming from someone who wasn't so sure about Bella at the beginning. I'm so so pleased. I just know episode 5 is going to be INSANELY GOOD, thank god we get to see it this Friday! I was going to loose my mind if we'd have to wait til Sunday lol Side note: Ellie actually finds a joke book in the game and most of the jokes in the series are from the game!

If season 2 comes out people better understand Abigail's story. People hated it because of what happened, but that little talk in the stairs in the show really reveals a lot. If people didn't notice in the game Ellie was going Abigail's route to the point of almost getting beefed up. Basically everything was going in circles and no way to stop the cycle. Actions have consequences and as much as we love Joel...
