The type of infected in this episode is called a Stalker. They’re between runners and clickers and their specialty is stealth. They literally hide in the shadows and then jump you. That’s why he came out from under that thing when he attacked. Lord knows how long he was in that room waiting.

Remember in the first episode when Ellie asked Joel if he ever feels bad for killing infected knowing that they were once people. I think she was still dealing with having killed Riley after she turned.

Military trained in combat first aider here. The thread would be okay to use, better if it was sterilized first. The stitching itself would help, but the big question (and a bit of plot armor here) is this. Closing the surface wound would help in healing it, but given the size and depth of the puncture wound itself, the big question is internal damage to blood vessels (potential internal bleeding and eventual spesis) or internal damage to vital organs. The story here makes the assumption (at least so far) that there was no major internal trauma (plot armor), so sewing it up would be enough. Now if Ellie can remember back to the campfire in the mountains when Joel gave her a drink, she'll have at least a bit of alcohol in Joel's flask to wash the wound with, and potentially sterilize the thread a bit. So, yes, it is possible to survive such a wound in the post infected era, providing there are no other underlaying complications, and no major infection.

I personally would immediately end myself if I got bite. I don't consider that the "easy way out" or "quitting" in the sense that it's cowardly in any sort of way. It's open question whether the people infected are still conscious to some extent while they're controlled by the fungus. Not only does ending myself prevent me from any possibility of a nightmarish zombie existence, it also stops me from being a threat to others. Of course, if Ellie had taken herself out, she never would've found out she was immune.

@Life Almost Without Reactions: 39:08 I think those in the QZ, especially those going to a FEDRA school know the full Cordyceps Infection timetable we saw in the first episode after the 20 year time jump by heart--there job is to keep the QZ safe and as we saw from the first episode, welcome healthy folks in. Full Cordyceps Infection timetable: --bites to the neck, head and face: 5 to 15 minutes --bites to the torso, shoulder, arm and hand: 2 to 8 hours --bites to the leg and foot: 12 to 24 hours Symptoms of Cordyceps Infection: --coughing --slurred speech --muscle spasms --mood change Ellie and Riley would be able to notice that one of them clearly wasn't going through the motions. We know from episode two that Marleen told the other Fireflies that found Ellie not to shoot her. They probably assumed that a FEDRA student took out one of them and found out that Ellie was bit after the fact, after finding Riley's body and realizing that Riley was turning/turned and that Ellie hadn't. I wouldn't be surprised if Riley asked Ellie to kill her just before she turned or made her promise to do so just as she turned ='(

In regards to Jackson city I think that they have explained it quite well in the show already. They are a tight knit community and they have been able to stay safe by keeping outsiders out. There are no straight objective good or bad here. If you are part of the community then yes you can trust them and are protected by them so they are good people. If you're an outsider you are taken with extreme caution and skepticism and you will be treated badly. Just because you are a decent person doesn't mean you can just walk up to they gate and they'll take you in with open arms. If they are currently not able to support more people or if they are unsure of your intentions in any way they will either turn you away or straight up kill you because now you know where they are and what they have. And they purposely leave the bodies out for warning to others that might come across it. The old couple never cared to venture out to find out more so from what they can see the tactic worked, it scared them from trying them. So you guys have to get rid of the notion of good or bad people/group. It all depends on perspective. Only reason they even took Joel and Ellie in was because he turned out to be the brother in law of the person in charge there. And even then she clearly was on guard and suspicious of Joel rightfully so because he's still an outsider with a questionable reputation and he can potential be trouble for her town that she is in charge of protecting.

All things considered this episode was one of the happier endings. Riley and Ellie had a sweet moment where they could just live in their love for each other for as much time as they had left together. Then it ends with Ellie being inspired by Riley’s words of never giving up your time with your loved ones in order to keep fighting for Joel. The moment Joel and Ellie held hands truly cements just how close they have become. The bar is pretty low for happy endings in this show, but that was pretty happy if you ask me 😅

I hate escalators ever since I saw that video with the Chinese lady… They basically work by increasing torque when they experience resistance, which usually is just more people stepping on them. But if you happen to somehow get INTO them… I'm a little disappointed of this one, because of the removal of the arcade scene from the game, one of the most iconic and meaningful scenes that showed Ellie's vivid imagination, which is very much a precursor to another very iconic scene in Part 2. (if you're curious: /watch?v=a8XgByLIe9w) With all the Left Behind references in the previous episodes I also kinda expected to see Ellie having to shoot Riley, but instead they just ended it pretty much like the DLC did, leaving the rest up to imagination. The next episode is either something you cannot predict, or something you already predicted. Whatever that might mean. ;)

Riley chose Mileena in Mortal Kombat 2 and Ellie played Baraka. Both were Lovers in the game. Baraka skewered Mileena as finisher. That was the metaphorical endgame. That's how Ellie killed Riley. I think she stabbed her. Previous episode, Ellie wanted a sip of liquor from Joel and said "still gross". This was her first time. I actually thought Ashley Johnson (game Ellie) would have her cameo here. Obviously, this was not the case, but it comes later in another memory.

Without any spoilers, this is the closest episode to what happened in gameplay. They've had some twists along the way, one that I wish they would have done is when Ellie told Joel earlier in the series that it's not the first time she's had to use a gun on someone. I'm pretty sure it's Riley when she turns. But, we don't get to see that and only speculate. I think it would have made the episode a little deeper if it kind of leaned towards it then maybe blacked the screen out for certainty of what happened.

To answer Hugo's question: Stitching open wounds without any professional help is not advisable as the needle for stitching clothes and suture needles for skin are different. The former is straight and the latter, in this case, should be curved. Suture needles for skin make the stitching process easier and safer. Suture threads, on the other hand, are used depending on the location and the type of the wound. Threads used for stitching wounds vary from silk, cotton, nylon, polyester, colagen and a lot more. Those threads are treated/sanitized unlike regular ones. The other reason why it is not advisable is because using unsanitized needles and threads on an open wound can cause an infection which could lead to sepsis. You obviously don't want you or your patient to get bigger problems from stitching a wound with unsanitized equipments. If my memory is correct, the next episode will tackle the problem above and how Ellie will handle the next steps to help Joel. I won't spoil any further! As always, awesome reaction!

The moment where cut back to Joel and he’s shivering/his teeth are chattering broke my heart. He’s probably cold because they’re in that freezing basement, and I imagine you can feel cold from loss of blood/a fever from infection…wish Ellie had given Joel her winter hat or an extra blanket. Not a surgeon but I do work in a medical field, apart from infection and dehissence of the wound, I would be worried about internal structures and organs under the skin wound that may have been damaged, if the damage underneath is bad enough and isn't fixed before the sutures, he could have internal bleeding.
