Tommy didn't throw Joel under the bus. Tommy just told/confessed to her what they did. She needs to blame Joel, so she can move the blame off of Tommy and reconcile what he did in her own mind. When she says "Tommy was following Joel" she doesn't even believe that weak justification herself.

I took it more as the wife blaming Joel for what Tommy did rather than Tommy just blaming Joel. As you see with his talk with Joel he said “we did those things”. So him telling those stories to his wife, she probably decided to ignore the “we did it” and put the whole blame on Joel herself because this whole show is about being selfish about the ones you love or the people you belong to. As we saw with Kathleen using her brother’s death for her own reason to keep on. As well as Henry taking his own life since he lost his purpose with his brother’s death. So far Tommy having to choose between risking an entire community of people or to help his own brother. Out those 3 examples I would say Tommy was the least selfish.

Him being scared to lose ellie and wanting her to go with Tommy is so understandable, he lost Sarah,Tess,sam and Henry and at a certain point he didn't have tommy either and him thinking he can't take care of her is such a scary thought for him is weak,panic attacks,hard of hearing on his right ear, Ellie has become his reason to keep surviving what a great story

On foot, with weather closing in, having to scavenge and hunt for food, and with the need to avoid both other people and infected, it shouldn't surprise anyone that it took that long to get there.

I think that it should be stated that it's tempting to pull out an object you've been stabbed with but you absolutely should not do that until you're somewhere you can get help cause it's the only thing keeping the blood in. I think a big part of Joel's speech was explaining that he knew why Tommy wanted to get away from him. He had a harder time reconciling the fucked up things they did and also at the beginning of the show it'd only been 3 weeks since Tommy stopped responding. It's a worrying amount of time to not talk to your brother but Joel also set out on a months-long excursion with no way for either of them to be in contact lol.

Tommy isn’t as far gone as Joel. Joel is literally justifying that he took people’s lives because it was the “only way” Tommy isn’t throwing Joel under the bus. He confided in his partner that they killed people which is something you probably should reveal in this world where your past always comes to haunt you.
@V.elociraptor
@V.elociraptor Год назад
Lol, you guys are way too harsh on Tommy. Sure, he's living in relative luxury now, but he worked hard to find it, and he experienced all of the desperation, fear, and trauma of the outbreak/subsequent years. Comparatively, he's only been in Jackson for a very short time. Maria doesn't like Joel because she loves a man who's core trauma derives from the actions that Joel instigated. Remember, Joel said that he's been on both sides of an ambush. He and Tommy killed innocent people for their food, clothes etc. Now, it's not necessarily Joel's fault, he was desperate, and Tommy was compliant, but these are still traumatic memories that Tommy contends with. It's like when you only hear about your partner's employer when they're complaining about them. Your partner's boss could be a perfectly ok person, but you're mostly hearing the bad things, so you're inclined to dislike them. Overall, Tommy is an optimistic person who has always wanted to do good. Edit: Tommy's also absolutely not pretending to mourn Sarah. He was a good, loving uncle, and he misses and mourns for his niece.

Do you guys just have no idea at all how long it takes to travel on foot? When you can't just look up the easiest way? when you have to find food and shelter as you go? Have to avoid people and infected? How far they got in 3 months is a damn miracle. Go try walking between two towns that are an hour or two away by car. If those towns are seperated by highways, as they probably are, that's an hour or two at 60-70 mph, yeah I bet none of you could walk that in a day. Then go see how tiny and inconsequential that distance was, then account for the fact with everything Ellie and Joel have to do on the way, could be two or three times as long to travel.

This is the most vulnerable we’ve seen from both Joel and Ellie yet. We know watching from Joel the desperation to close himself off to preserve whatever humanity he doesn’t want to lose yet and him breaking down in front of Tommy is indicative of how much he’s barely keeping it together, how this dam he built up for himself is breaking apart the more he gets closer to his new surrogate daughter. Ellie, on the other hand, is a whole different kettle of fish. This is where her abandonment issues begin to boil over the more she loses her innocence; between being orphaned by her parents, being pawned off by Marlene, losing Riley, Tess, Henry and Sam, now she has to watch her father figure pawn her off and abandon her too? This girl can’t catch a damn break; it breaks my heart when she repeatedly tells him “Don’t leave me alone”. We can’t catch a break either, it looks like.

They were walking from Kansas City to Jackson, Wyoming. In the winter. That takes some time. These people took Tommy in to this community. The community has rules. One of them is staying off the radio. Remember, it had only been 3 weeks since since Joel had last heard from Tommy before he went looking for him. He may have tried to contact him in the 4 months since, but had no way to reach him. Another rule is not telling people about the place. Essentially broadcasting about it cross country over a radio. Besides, Joel was in the QZ. He had electricity, water ssewers, medicine all the things he would trade with Bill & Frank. Joel had a reputation in the QZ already. Robert was scared of him. The radio guy said he was a "capable" guy. Marlene, the head of the Fireflies said she knnew what both he and Tess were capable of. We know he killed innocent people. Joel is concerned about his ability to finish this for several reasons. His hearing loss has become a liability. He's 57. He's not as sstrong or as good of a fighter as he was when this all started. That kid Bryan would have killed him if it werent for a 14 year old girl saving him. And now, hes been having panic attacks. I love the look Tommy gives when he relizes hes a communist. But, even better is the quick, big brother look Joel gives gives him like "Yep, see what happens when I'm not around to watch over you."
@testfire3000
@testfire3000 Год назад
I have had many panic attacks and I have also had two serious heart attacks. Honestly it isn't always obvious which is which. Especially for a man like Joel who has never had either (as far as we know). It quite literally stabs at the heart of his self image as the tough guy and protector, the man who can get it all done. The man who is willing to work a double-shift as a construction contractor to give his daughter Sarah a good life. The man who can guide Tess and some kid through a ruins full of Infected. Now all he sees is his failures. That is brutal.

Kansas City, Missouri to Cheyenne, Wyoming is 640 miles, on foot, assuming no obstructions, no weather delays, assuming no need to find food, assuming no encounters. at the whopping 4 miles per hour considered to be the high end of human walking speed, would be 160 hours of walking. This would be 16 days if you maintained that speed for 10 hours per day, which would mean you need to scavenge for food, fish, hunt or trap animals, and you can't set traps at the start of the day and check them at the end of the day, you'd have to set your traps before resting and check them before moving on. Since they left Kansas City with no food, scavenging, hunting, trapping and fishing all take time. Figure in Joel is in his mid 50s, Ellie is 14, they probably aren't walking a consistent 4 miles for 10 hours a day, and they have to find food along the way, and being someone who grew up in the area near Kansas/Missouri, rest assured, there will be weather delays any time of year. Under ideal conditions it would be half a month, factor in one good storm (which you would get in autumn or spring in this area) you're going to be hunkered down for half a day and your travel will be at best half speed for a couple days (the 640 miles is based on not needing to follow highways the whole way, but also an increase in altitude from one end of the journey to the other of 3/4 of a mile higher at the Wyoming side, how fast are you walking uphill?) So we've established, if you can walk 4 miles per hour 10 hours a day, have no restriction on food, no place you have to go around, no encounters, no weather issues, basically "You're walking with a car behind you loaded with food, drink etc at all times, with absolutely beautiful weather." You could make it in 16 days. As 4 is the high end of average speed, let's step down a notch to 3 miles per hour, now it's 33% longer in hours. After a week of hiking all day, you're going to slow down. Throw in one incident of weather, hostile encounter, or need to find food, you probably just lost 2-4 days travel. 15:26-15:30 "Why didn't he tell his brother about this place? He's living good" Please refer back to 14:09-14:19 Asked and answered, promptly forgotten, asked again 15:50-15:56 You are savage reactors, look to the last 2 timestamps and you'll see why I say this here. If you do the math, Tess and Joel were trying to get a battery, because it's been 3 weeks since Joel sent a message and Tommy didn't respond. Maria is "a few months along" and is Tommy's wife. Even assuming a day from Boston to Bill and Frank's (described as a 5 hour hike the morning after Tess died) a night spent there, a week to Kansas City (based on having to stop every hour or so to scavenge fuel) from Bill and Frank's a whole 3 days (which it was less) in Kansas City, and then 3 months from Kansas City to finding Tommy, it's been maximum 4 1/2 months since Joel was looking for the response from Tommy. So Tommy and Maria moved quick to get pregnant and get married. (not necessarily in that order, but Tommy seems the type to want to marry if he's the father of your child. 18:28-18:32 "They have an extra house and everything for his brother?" If you go back to when Maria suggested where to set them up, across from Maria and Tommy, you'll find Tommy says "it's pretty much untouched since '03 but it's got water and heat on" They walled off a place with buildings already, they don't just build houses based on population, they maintain what they have, so when it's needed, it's ready in an hour rather than in 4-8 weeks. They haven't hit the limit of how many they could let in, because they don't bring in just everyone, for security reasons. 20:36- 20:38 "Shots fired" 20:43-20:47 "Second salvo" [Sorry, before law enforcement my dad was navy, he had colorful ways to describe things, modified what he said in respect for my mom] [my grandfather (mother's side) was army, my father was navy, my time was air] 21:30-21:37 *if* Joel will entrust someone with this knowledge, it makes sense it's his brother who tried to help him save Sarah, and it was *crucial* to Tommy that it was Joel saying " _I saw her bit with my own eyes_ " and "_that was months ago.... months_ " Anyone else handed him this line it wouldn't mean much, he might chain her up and see, but Joel telling this to Tommy, claiming it's been months, the dog cleared her, and he saw it with his own eyes? That's overwhelming enough for the "I need to know the whole story" 31:59-30:05 unless seriously alarmed, tamed horses are very accepting that they can't move if their reigns are resistant to the move. A common practice in the old west days was to slap the reigns on a post so they wrapped 2-3 times and just walk away. The horse quickly accepted it limitation. If one horse actually bolted, the others likely would as well. It's much like baby elephants in traveling circuses being attached to a stake by rope, they can't break the rope as a baby, they don't think they can break the same rope as an adult. (mind you the adult elephant weighs well over a thousand pounds more than the rope could dream of handling.) 33:10-33:15 "Oh no the horsey's out there. They're going to know that they're there." Yes, because there's only one side to a building on a university campus. Sure, from a screenwriting standpoint that would be quite true. But from a realistic standpoint, it's not guaranteed. When you walk past the north side of a building, do you see what's on the south side (assuming normal walls, not glass walls all the way through the building) 38:36-38:50 So quickly again you forget, their rules are "stay off the radio, don't advertise" the whole reason Tommy stopped responding to Joel. You're saying "invite him to this nice town. 1. he's more than halfway across the country 2. the message will be received by anyone on that frequency 3. the radio operator in Boston could easily sell the information about this place 4. their rules are in place to protect what they have 5. srsly?

You were right when you said “why don’t they both go?”… of course if this were a real situation the most logical and safest thing would be for both Joel and Tommy to take Ellie to Colorado. There is absolutely no reason why it had to be Joel OR Tommy alone…but it suited the emotional story for it to be that way so I guess we, the audience, just have to accept it 😂

TLOU outside of giant fungus zombies has my stamp of approval because it feels realistic. You get into a big huge blowup with loved ones IRL sometimes, but let that stuff slide all the time. Sometimes its just about getting worries and insecurities out there. Joel's argument with Ellie felt like one of those times. It wasn't even a question of Ellie forgiving Joel, she is waiting for him to come pick her up in the morning, and is disappointed to find out it is Tommy. She had already forgiven him long time ago, probably minutes after it happening. It was more of Joel trying to self justify his actions, and then regretting them before he really carried them out. When Joel didn't go, and Ellie wasn't even mad enough at Joel to make any sort of deal about it whatsoever afterwards, it quietly opened up the characters eyes to how they saw and really felt about each other. Its when you are playing against narrative tropes for a sense of realism when you have a huge blowup between two characters that ends up being a bunch of nothing. It was a little more substantial event in the game, but was less well manufactured narratively as well. I like it. It is better than a bunch of forcefed and stilted interactions we get in most major mainstream media. Also, the western united states are fricking huge. Wyoming is massive. Depending on your speed it could take 14-18 days. And that is jut walking straight, and not including walking across the states from KC, Missouri to get there, which are all also big. SPOILER Tommy ends up being one of the characters most for Joel and Ellie in the series. But given the nature of the series you can see why there is wariness concerning his character.

Joel is the older brother but Tommy is was the one who joined the army well before the outbreak, I really felt that "betrayal" in him not worrying enough about Joel while he was going through all of this just to help Tommy in whatever trouble he could've been. And YES!! Whatever he told Maria to make her think Joel is the "bad one" while telling Joel "I don't blame you for it" at the bar... I liked the conflict a lot but my gawd!!

Joel was pushing Ellie away because he started getting to close to her. He was scared he would lose another “daughter”. But then he had the night to dwell about it and realized he couldn’t just let her go.

I kinda like Joel and Tommy's argument more in the game. In the show, Tommy comes off as more of an asshole while in the game, it's clear that Tommy resented Joel for the things they did. Even saying that he would've rather died than do the things he did with Joel. I think part of it is because we actually get to see how brutal Joel can be in the game. The show only ever talks about how brutal he can be. You can see both sides in the game. But in the show, it's hard to see Tommy's POV when all he had to do was send Joel a message telling him that he's fine.
@dwnkaomwn3953
@dwnkaomwn3953 Год назад
Joel was being an asshole himself after that "I guess we'll find out" comment about Tommy being a good dad. Plus, he can't just do whatever he wants at that settlement. It would be too risky to send any messages out there for someone to interpret. I understand Joel's points of view, but I get Tommy's too.
@Cert1f1edM1dget
@Cert1f1edM1dget Год назад
@@dwnkaomwn3953 I get that but how do you justify not saying "Hey man I'm good. Don't worry." Joel may look for him anyways but he also may not. He'll definitely look for Tommy if he just stays quiet letting Joel assume he's in trouble. Edit: forgot to mention that all of this has happened because Joel was looking for Tommy thinking he needs his help. Tess died because he needed a battery/car to get to Tommy. Entire show started because Tommy couldn't tell Joel that he's still alive. I'm assuming they both haven't seen each other in years (based on dialogue in the game and the show). If Tommy wanted to keep it that way, all he has to do is to say something. Instead he let Joel think he's dead and now he's here. Edit 2: VERY MILD SPOILERS FOR TLOU2 My only justification for this is that Tommy does things on impulse sometimes. Right after Ellie asks if Tommy is coming with her in TLOU2, he instead goes away on his own and leaves a letter to Maria telling her to not let Ellie leave and he'll do "the mission" on his own. Maria then lets Ellie leave and to also bring her "dumbass" husband back. Joel also does mention (while looking at dinosaurs) that Tommy has a "thick skull."
@TukaihaHithlec
@TukaihaHithlec Год назад
@@dwnkaomwn3953 Joel wasn’t able to be a “good father” and Tommy was _still_ dependent on him. Now Tommy couldn’t even be a good brother. Joel has no reason to believe Tommy will be a good father, but at least his response was neutral. And Tommy mentions how people take multi-week long trips away from Jackson all the time. He could have found a radio tower without risking the town.
@TukaihaHithlec
@TukaihaHithlec Год назад
I think the implication in the game is that Tommy never took part in the ambushes, he just survived off of them. That could be why Joel was as offended as he was - Joel did terrible things so Tommy wouldn’t have to, and it wasn’t appreciated. I’m not sure why the show made these negative changes to Tommy and Maria. They’ve done it fairly consistently though: the “bad guys” are more understandable and the “good guys” are less.

Tommy said it. They took him in and they don’t want people to know about the place(for good reason.) Tommy going, “just let me tell my brother who has done all this killing that he can come up here” doesn’t seem like a thing people should expect the town would be cool with. Plus, Joel coming meant Tess was coming and god knows who else. People let their love for Joel override reason and common sense
