Marlene has only known Joel as a stone cold killer after he has already lost his daughter. Her mistake was not anticipating that Joel would become so attached to Ellie. Either Marlene should have told Joel after the procedure was done or she should have given Ellie the choice to go through with surgery. If given the choice, Ellie would have likely approved given what they've been through to get there.
@enadegheeghaghe6369
@enadegheeghaghe6369 Год назад
Telling Joel after the surgery was done would have yielded the same result. Joel would have still killed them all
@Battlefieldtripshow
@Battlefieldtripshow Год назад
I don't think the show really gets into it, but the game strongly implies that Marlene is in a rough spot after her disastrous withdrawal from Boston. she doesn't have much pull with the west coast Fireflies. but I think the core part of the conflict, and why Joel lies to Ellie, is that Marlene, &/or her superiors, are afraid Elli will say no; but Joel *knows* she'd say yes. If Ellie had any shred of hope she could still sacrifice herself for a cure she'd go back in a heartbeat. it's a case of both sides being unwilling to risk her exercising her autonomy. as for "wait to tell Joel after" - Marlene is genuinely guilty for what's about to happen, & justifying it to Joel is mostly about assuaging her conscience rather than actually making sure Joel understands. stupid? yeah, but explicable.

I loved how all of the callbacks like Chef Boyardee and the five mile hike that Joel makes is his way of showing how much he cares for Ellie. It harkens back to Frank saying paying attention to things is how we show love. He was paying attention to Ellie the entire time because he instantly felt those fatherly instincts when he was first hired to protect her. He just buried it until he couldn’t anymore. The scene where he shows his vulnerability and openly talks about his suicide attempt was so heartwarming. He shows so much vulnerability that he wouldn’t originally show because that’s how much he cares about Ellie. It’s heavily implied that he contemplated suicide in the game, but verbalizing it in the show only to end with the “it wasn’t time that did it” was a good choice. And Ellie responding with “well I’m glad that didn’t work out” was perfect. That’s the closest they will ever get to saying “I love you”. Love how much goes without saying in their relationship. It’s that subtle dance between tease and payoff that really makes us chomp at the bit for every single interaction, clinging to every second.

Ellie's demeanor seemed off because she is still traumatized from what happened in the previous episode and she had no idea that they were going to do surgery on her . She and Joel were under the assumption that they were going to draw blood or something and do tests on her.
@Zaxbox
@Zaxbox Год назад

@Mistah47
@Mistah47 Год назад
No, Ellie and Joel didn’t know that it would kill her, otherwise Ellie would’ve already made peace with it, and Joel would have no reason to kill everyone in there to retrieve her. That’s what makes this ending so special is that you’re left to debate what Joel did and Marlene as well. And whether or not Ellie would’ve been ok if she did know. Ppl have been debating the ending to this game since 2013 when it first came out and yes the finale is the same as the game ending. Can’t wait to see to yall play through it! It’s action survival/horror btw. Many differences between the show and game and I prefer the game myself, but the show is an incredible adaptation nonetheless

Her demeanor switched up after the events revolving around David. In the game as it transitions to the next chapter, there is an immediate scene where Ellie is staring blankly at a mural of a deer (a callback to what led her to cross paths with David). Joel calls out to her but she is just zoned out. I wish they had included that in the series.

It’s important that even if we don’t agree with Joel’s choice we empathize and UNDERSTAND why he made that choice. Ellie wasn’t given a choice to die for a potential “cure”. If she had and Joel was allowed to talk to her, I think he would have let it happen. I’m not a parent, but I have several little siblings I love dearly. I feel bad for Ellie. She has tons of survivors guilt and trauma after everything and in the end she was deprived of the choice to either die for the cure or live. I 100% side with Joel up until the lying. I feel like Joel lied because hes so terrified of Ellie resenting him for what he’s done that he doesnt even want to play with the idea of her knowing the truth and leaving him for it. I think if he was honest with her of course she would have been upset with him but she would have understood. At the same time Marlene was so twisted for depriving Ellie of the truth and option to choose.
@MrPicklerwoof
@MrPicklerwoof Год назад
Also, Joel now knows how the Fireflies operate. They were willing to commit murder instead of being honest with Ellie, which is a huge red flag for the group as a whole. Regardless of whether Ellie would or wouldn't have agreed to sacrifice herself for a chance of a cure, there are deeper issues surrounding the Fireflies now. I can understand Joel being afraid of Ellie falling into their clutches again, giving some reasoning for maintaining a lie.

Great season, finale. The only disappointment was that the episode was shorter. The acting was so on point when it came to certain scenes. I think it is cool to have Ashley Johnson, who voices Ellie in the games, plays her mother. I noticed that in the same manner that Ellie killed Riley, it is almost similar to Marlene killing Ellie mom. I like how both Joel and Ellie talk about how Joel reason for the scar on his head was because he tried to take his own life after the loss of Sarah. As Ellie tells him about killing Riley. I understand Joel reason for killing the Fireflies was because he grew attached to Ellie andd because he didn't want to lose another daughter. This is why Marlene wants to keep Joel away from Ellie. But man, you can tell Ellie knows he's lying to her with the story of the Fireflies not finding a cure. Ellie is questioning her purpose. She doesn't know how to confront Joel with why she doesn't believe his story. But anyway, season 2 is gonna be interesting. But great reaction from your three.

They insinuated that there are more immune throughout the show.. in episode one, the little boy that tested positive had been walking for days and had yet to turn.

Ashley Johnson who plays Ellie’s mom here played her in the game,….she also stared in the 80’s show growing pains as a kid and looked just like Bella.

I didn't see anyone say this, but the person playing the pregnant woman in the beginning was the voice actor for Ellie in the game. Very poetic how she birthed the show version of Ellie. Can't wait to see you all play the game. Great video

They've established mid season that Joel is not a very good liar. He tried it once when he tried explaining how *petro works but couldn't pull it off. With that in mind, Ellie absolutely knows deep down that he's lying but she tries to deny the truth because she knows a lie like that from someone she loves and cares about... it'll break her.

Marlene would have never expected this from Joel because the Joel she ( thoughts she ) knew never would have given a crap about Ellie. She's just cargo. Oh how wrong she was.
@eastvandb

I'm not sure that's what happened there. I think Marlene allowed herself to feel compassion for Joel because she also loves Ellie, and it was a fatal mistake. (tactical mistake)

I agree with everything Joel did, up until the lying. Even killing doctor, tbh. Imagine killing your only sample of immunity on a single theory/shot in the dark. But I do understand why Joel didn't tell Ellie - she has survivors guilt, a savior complex and she's so flippant about her own life. She would torture herself forever knowing that she could have "saved the world", even though we know that cure was a shot in the dark.

The key to this for me is when Marlene said, “Our doctor THINKS this could be a cure” and “We didn’t tell her anything”...I agree with Joel’s decision at that point. But lying to Ellie - and her knowing it - is the tipping point. Ellie trusted him completely and now that trust is broken.

That's amazing that you guys are going to play the game!! It is so cool a show adaptation is getting more people to play the game. Both the game and show bring something special to the overall story and now having watched and played it I have an even bigger appreciation for the series. I had the same "I can't believe they ended it there" reaction at first to the end of the game, but it was something that stuck with me for a decade. Playing the second game and eventually watching season 2 will give you a bigger understanding and appreciation for season 1. I'm excited to hear all of the debates about what people would do in Joel's position like there was a decade ago.
@ThunderTaco206
@ThunderTaco206 Год назад
Without giving you any spoilers for season 2 I'll say this. If season 2 and 3 (which are supposed to be adapted from the The Last of Us 2) follow the second game as closely as this one did the first game, then what Joel did in the hospital in this episode drives everything that will happen in the next couple seasons. It is brutal stuff. And what you saw Ellie do to David in episode 8 is a foreshadowing of the violence that she is capable of. She is truly Joel's daughter. She is capable of the same kind of extreme violence that he is when she is pushed. That is all I'll say.

11/10! *long comment incoming* I'm glad they kept it true to the original video game as much as possible. I love the extended backstory of how Ellie was born and it was fitting that the lady who played Ellie in the video game was her mother that was poetic. Originally when I played the game 10 years ago I thought Joel was 100% right now, I now kind of understand the other side of things as well but to me there's really no 100% right or wrong just a lot of grey. it really comes down to perspective but I think if Ellie had The opportunity to make The Choice she would have chosen the sacrifice, for a potential cure. But Marlene and Joel both took that away from her am yes she's only 14 but she still should have at least been put up to speed. I could say a million more things, im just glad more people are seeing how deep video game stories can be. It's just as much her story as it was Joel's. Great game great show

The Last of Us video game is a masterpiece of fliming in to be honest. Before the Last of Us, there's been not a lot of video games that can be made into flims or tv shows. I want you all to enjoy playing the game because it's fun and challenging but the story telling in that game is decades ahead of its time. I'm so happy that this game was adapted well into a series and can't wait to see what they are going to do for season 2.

The gameplay is a lot of * puzzle solving (how to get from one place to another), * encounters (do you sneak around or fight), * scavenging (Ellie poking around Joel's hideout) and * crafting (Joel assembling a car battery from parts at Bill's place, ways to modify weapons, home-made first-aid kits, etc).

I know a lot of people have already pointed out that this is how the first game ended, but it's also important to note something about it. The first game, which had this ending, was released in 2013. Part 2 was released in 2020, and for awhile it was uncertain if there even would be a second title. People that played the game literally had 7 years to think about just what that ending scene meant.
