Fun fact: before the game came out 50% of play testers saw Joel as a monster and hated this ending and wanted it changed while all of the testers with children agreed with Joel. Love that Naughty Dog stuck with their controversial ending and didn’t pull punches. People still discuss this ending to this day. Also Ellie’s mom was played by Ashley Johnson, the original Ellie. It’s cool to see Game Ellie give birth to show Ellie.

I do believe that if Joel told Ellie the truth, he'd "lose" her in another way. As in, Ellie might start resenting Joel for the decision that he made, in it being for him, and not for her. He might have saved her physical form from perishing, though should Ellie despise Joel, there may very well have been an unrepairable rift between them.

The mother of Ellie is the actress who voiced acted Ellie in the games. Also a nurse at the end that was about to make the surgery is voicing a character in The Last Of Us II.

She was feeling down and quiet because she was still traumatized by her almost rape and imprisonment and having to murder someone from the last episode. No matter how much time went by. She got the reality of what she always wanted by being more like Joel and it is now only hitting her what that is.

Also a little insight...remember the kid in episode 1 the fedra euthanized, they lied to the kid to make him comfortable...now it comes full circle and here the fireflies are doing the same thing that their enemy fedra was doing. Lying to ellie to make her feel safe while they sacrifice her brain. Then remember Joel carrying that kid to the fire with no emotion and now he ends carrying out Ellie the same way, full of emotion. This show is awesome

The way the show ends is EXACTLY how the game ends so that abrupt ending it what we felt as well lol

It wasn't 100% guaranteed that they would've found a cure -- they were gambling that they might find something that could help provide a solution to cordyceps, but Ellie would have been a casualty.

thats why everyone loved this game cause the ending really both sides could be right or wrong its all about perspective in that what would you do in that situation could you do that. Would you be able to sacrifice your daughter to save the world

My god this was such an emotional episode (I've never played the game). A few things if I may: -I found Ellie's sorrow so sad to see-clearly the trauma from David affected her. I found Ellie laughing feeding the giraffe moving, as interacting with animals really is healing for people who've experienced trauma. -Hearing Joel admit he attempted to take his own life made me super emotional, not only seeing Joel say he's happy he failed with tears in his eyes, but I imagine it was very emotional for Pedro, knowing that he lost his mom to suicide back when he was younger. -The ominous music playing during Joel's rampage was so eerie.... -Consensus on Joel's decision: I totally understand where Joel was coming from...he didn't want to lose another daughter, but the ominous music playing during his shooting really gave the feeling that this will have severe consequences. I also don't think it's fair for Joel to lie to Ellie like he did, but again, I understand where he is coming from. I feel mixed feelings-nothing is simply right or wrong. Looking forward to seeing Bella and Pedro bonding together more for the upcoming awards circuit (assuming TLOU is nominated), and I can't wait for Season 2. Bravo!

You wonder what was up with Ellie and why she was quiet and checked out? In a word, trauma. To avoid a long explanation detailing each specific episode of trauma, go back and watch the least ten minutes or so of the last episode. That was life altering trauma that is going to leave lasting damage. Edit - this comment was made before the end of the reaction when you realized the answer.

I think Ellie was a death seeker. In the game one of the things she tells Joel at the end after telling him about Riley was “I’m still waiting for my turn.” 😢 She definitely would’ve chosen to sacrifice herself.

It ended exactly like that in the game too. Now, you have questions like us players had before part II came out, and part II brings some answers... But also part II is way darker. You have the choice to play part II or keep it for after season 2 to discover the story via the tv show. Be warned though : part II is longer and it may be more than one season (I'd say two... but I don't know for sure obviously) In any case, think about where their relationship started versus where it ended. The whole story was really about their relationship. Everything they lived together tightened their bond.

Ashley johnson is not just a voice actress, she is also an actress, she starred in ABC's Blindspot which is a complete 5 seasons, also she did motion capture for TLOF, meaning they are acting too...just like Josh brolin did as Thanos in Avengers, you guys should check the behind the scenes of the game since all the cast are on motion capture doing all the works...and it is so great to see, because it shows how good their acting was, and i was imagining what if they are in theatre doing it...😅🤣 Also they used a real baby, you should check HBO's behind the scenes of episode 9 She is also Pike from vox machina and a player nerd for dungeons and dragons...

Joel can't tell Ellie the truth, for the same reason he can't let her die to save humanity: he cannot endure losing another daughter-father connection, he knows Ellie would choose to make the cure, and taking that from her could make her resentful, and probably push her away forever, and Joel can't risk that outcome either.

Joel knows that ellie would want the surgery to be done, but after everything he lived through and suffered, this joel is not willing to let her go, he is being selfish, as henry said in ep 5 "i'm a bad guy because i did a bad guy thing"

Joel didn't want to save the world. he just wanted so save HIS world.

It's interesting to see that a lot of people were surprised by the "abrupt" ending. I think it was perfect, you can see in Ellies face at the very end that she chooses to believe him because she needs him in his life more than she needs the truth about the hospital situation, and it's the line with which the game ends also.

26:33 I mean Ellie is acting weird because she got captured, almost got eaten and almost got graped. She's weird and off because of those events. Definitely some PTSD to go with it. This show's constantly time jumps and unnamed amount of time gave me whiplash.

One VERY important thing about the cure thing - it is not guaranteed that he would find a cure; it is even said in the game that they have already tried several things with different subjects and no progress was made so far. Would you give up on your "daughter" for a CHANCE on a cure? Do they even have enough resources or the necessary ones to produce such cure? It's not that easy to accept that.

Joel was in a lose/lose situation. Imagine being able to save Ellie (second daughter) only to then give her away at the end. Imagine if the surgery didn't work. He would have given away his girl and nothing came from it. It was a faulty plan from the beginning.

One thing about asking her to do it, is that there was never really a choice. Everyone believes of course that Ellie would have made the sacrifice, but they were not about to allow her that 1% chance that she would say no. In the end, everyone here did what they believed was right for them, right for the world that they lived in. Marlene believed that trying to cure this plague was the right thing to do, Joel felt that saving Ellie was the right thing to do, and Ellie chosing to believe Joel was what she felt was the right thing to do. I do hope you try playing the game. It is one of the very rare occasions where being in control actually greatly enhances the story and experience.

The first season is almost note for note the first game (with less action) I'm actually really impressed. You guys can definitely play Part 1 without spoilers, but you won't be able to play Part 2 till the show ends (from what I've heard about HBO's plans)

She's right, there's no certainty that they could come up with a cure. What was certain is that Ellie isn't gonna survive the procedure. I think Joel lying to her was not at all a bad decision, because no matter her decision, it'll be bad for Ellie herself. a. if she wants to sacrifice herself then she'd die, at 14. b. if she decides that she doesn't want to sacrifice herself, then she'd carry the guilt for the rest of her life knowing that she maybe able to end everyone's suffering. There maybe some selfishness in here, but I do think in the end it's all about protecting Ellie.

I get it. Ellie’s not Joel’s biological daughter and I feel like she’s the one to be able to have a choice on whether she takes the surgery or not. Then again you think about how the world is considering the cordyceps and if the cure is to be made what could really be done at this point in time? With how much it spread, it’ll be hard to say it’s viable and what if the cure worsens the state of the world? I dont know jus my opinion.

There will be no spoilers unless you play the season game which season 2 will cover (season 2 would have to be atleast 20 episodes to cover all of it though, it’s a much longer game). I have not played the game but I know one thing Joel is a killing machine! I also thought the episode was short! But I'm lost because if this is the end of their quest then the world will slowly die! Ellie is the one hope left in this world of darkness! Also the lady that played Ellie mother is she the voice actor for one of the characters in Vox Machina?! I also didn't understand why the doctors would go straight to killing Ellie! They don't know if that experiment will work and any sane doctor would never just kill Ellie she is too important!! I would think they would run test first but to kill her made no sense to me! Ellie is too important!! Good episode but I'm sure that Ellie knows that Joel is lying! I think the fire flys or the government will still come after Ellie because she is mankind's only hope!!
