/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Ok so The Last Of Us centres around a deadly infection caused by funghi known as the Cordyseps. These real world parasites can be found in nature and what's most terrifying about the Last Of Us is that there is basis in science for something like this to happen.
Episode 1 of the HBO show opens with a scientist theorising the rise of them all the way back in the 60s and like he says, there's no cure.
But where did the infection originate from and how did it spread so quickly?
Well throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down everything we know about how it began and the theories about how it spread so quickly. If you enjoy the video then please hit the thumbs up button and don't forget to subscribe for videos like this every day. With that out the way, thanks for clicking this, now let's get into The Last Of Us.
Now when looking at where it all started I think that the first place to go to is the game. The playstation classic doesn't give us too much of a backstory on where it originated from but there are teases found in documents. When looking through newspapers we come across the Texas Herald which reported on the infection. On September 26th it reported that admittance at hospitals was up 300% due to the infection.
The FDA also released a statement about contaminated crops and that massive recalls were expected. This of couse didn't happen but the statement did give us a clue about what was happening. It said:
So there are clues that it's coming from countries with a hotter climate. This was teased at in the initial science report at the start and 2003 is listed as being one of the hottest years on record.
Now though it's not in South America, we do hear a report in episode 1 that there is something strange going on in Jakarta. This indonesian city is located in Asia and they might have changed this from South America for us to explore it in a later episode. During filming of the show people from Jakarta posted that things were being filmed in the city so we could possibly see this coming down the line at some point.

In the truck, when they are talking about whether they could be infected, Joel says that they probably aren't infected because none of them have been to the city recently and while his daughter says she hasn't, she looks worried because that's where she just got his watch fixed.

It’s especially cool knowing that alongside Cordyceps in nature, there has also evolved an anti-Cordyceps parasite, that prevents Cordyceps from taking over hosts by preying on the parasitic fungus itself as it tries to take over a host. Interesting if Ellie somehow is the first human to have been infected by an evolved version of this “good” parasitic fungus. 😊

really doesn't make sense though. they would havebeen eating flour from the same sources in the days before and after. flour is soubiquitous that anybody not actively avoiding gluten would have eaten it before anyone would figure out that it was a source of infection. what is much more plausible than avoidingit by avoiding all flour is just avoiding it by sheer luck because, if the infection was spread by imported flour, most flour would not be contaminated.

The most terrifying part about the last Of us was when I found out that most of the infected are still in their minds and are aware of what's happening that just as an entire new horror to the entire situation imagine being in your mind trapped inside of an infected body and not having any control over your faquaties and just force to linger around in an abandoned buithing waiting for something alive to come in and trying to eat it against your will. For years no less
@WoWFtw8
@WoWFtw8 Год назад
I imagine the reason so many of the infected tumbles when running and not having full control of their motor capabilities is becasue deep down subconsciously the host is trying to fight hunting down people
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 Год назад
@@WoWFtw8 Nah, the hosts have no real control at all. They're just locked out. But the cordyceps does relinquish a bit of control when it's not in attack mode. But it also doesn't relinquish much control. It essentially paralyzes their bodies to keep them from moving when they're in a dormant state, and they can only do certain things like move their eyes around, probably because of the eyes being one of the the closest things directly wired to the brain. As we saw in a trailer, they were holding a knife to ones face, the type that is already long gone and plastered to a wall to be consumed and unable to move, and he was following it with his eyes, indicating he was mentally aware, and probably following the knife to indicate he wanted to be killed to end his suffering, because that was the only movement he could control. I'd imagine after a certain point for most infected, the cordyceps consumes enough of their brain that even the cordyceps itself loses control over motor functions, and then the cordyceps just consumes them from there to grow itself, since they are no longer physically useful to spread the infection anymore, the only use for them is food. So they couldn't attack even if the cordyceps wants to. So what it tells us is that cordyceps primarily invades the brains motor function regions, but not so much the regions for thinking or memory or basic bodily functions like heart beat, because it needs those intact in order for motor functions to work and for the host to be kept alive. If it does too much damage to those areas, it wouldn't be able to utilize them to attack with. For example, a zombie with no mental processing capability (i.e. brain dead but heart still beating) would give the cordyceps nothing to work with. They need certain brain structures intact in order to process things like visuals and sound and sensation, in order to perform even basic functions like walking/running/attacking.

Tommy looking for pancakes at their breakfast shows how close they all were to getting infected, great writing. You see the Addlers feed the grandmother that biscuit, as Sarah and Joel head to school and work, that was the moment the old lady was infected. Edit: they didn’t have pancakes because joel forgot to get the pancake mix, which really ties in with how consuming his job was because he had to work on his birthday and couldn’t even get home by the time he promised Sarah.
@ethidian3444
@ethidian3444 Год назад
If Joel bought pancake mix, realistically there is no chance it would have the same brand new flour that people are getting infected by. If that was the case, widespread infection would have occurred already. Whatever new flour is being sold will start infecting people the day it reaches the market shelves. Only people who buy brand new flour (not old stock) and use it right after buying it will be the initially infected, and it will then spread like a zombie virus with only a small number of original hosts. The granny next door is an original host, presumably from the brand new flour they got and used in the morning. Since people started getting infected mid-day, it's easy to then assume the flour was initially stocked the previous mid-day, and took at least 16 hours to infect people. And this has to be one of the first cities to be stocked with the new flour for public consumption, as there clearly isn't a widespread outbreak in America before this day. One possibility is that nobody realizes it is the flour that is infecting people, and people all around the world don't know what to avoid until it is too late. Possibly even contact with the flour could lead to infection, but likely at a much slower pace than eating it.

Aren't the biscuits also equally important as she refused to eat food. She was already infected. And once infected the fungi doesn't need food itself as it is feeding off of your body and controlling your brain function so you would no longer feel the need to eat. It is connected to crops in the story as well but I feel like her not eating was another take way there.
@lilchaos9212
@lilchaos9212 Год назад
Yeah, I feel like as the infection takes to take control it first starts slowly, taking over the smaller bodily functions. When you're hungry, your stomach and intestinal tract produce ghrelin which stimulates your appetite and tells your brain to eat. It may be that after a while, once the fungus takes control, it makes your ghrelin go into overdrive which leads to people biting and eating other people even if the fungus uses the host's body to sustain itself, helping it spread the fungus to more hosts.

In real life Cordyceps is mostly found in Asia. The genus has a worldwide distribution and most of the approximately 600 species[3] that have been described are from Asia (notably Nepal, China, Japan, Bhutan, Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand). Cordyceps species are particularly abundant and diverse in humid temperate and tropical jungles. So it makes sense for the outbreak to start in Indonesia. Apparently, they don't want it spreading by spores in the TV show because they don't want to cover the actor's faces with gas masks (despite the fact Pedro Pascal has shown he can act with his face fully covered). So it makes sense that they change the initial infection happening due to spores to happening due via ingestion like ergot. (Real-life Cordyceps spreads to insects via spores and unlike ergot and other poison fungi Cordyceps is edible by people and actually has health benefits). The scientist in 60s talks about ergot and other poisonous fungi that cause hallucination, hinting that this fictional cordyceps is like ergot (makes you sick via ingestion) so it makes sense that the original outbreak was spread by bread. The scientist also mentioned human immune systems being able to fight infections (notably fever). This is silly if you think about it since real-life cordyceps are from the jungle and jungles are hot and real-life fungi like coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) can infect people just fine. But suspending our disbelief, it makes sense that the first person we see infected is an old woman. Maybe many people ate contaminated wheat but only those with weaker immune systems became infected that way, but they in turn can infect more people through bites which might have a higher risk of infection?

They could have eaten flour products before, was it really only on this day that the infection was contained in food? It also mentioned that those who were in the city could get infected, but Joel was at work and Sarah was at school where one of her classmates might have been infected (the boy whose arm was shaking). In general, it is not entirely clear, but thanks for the explanation.

@@EggEnjoyer yea that and everyones body works differently. Higher and lower immune systems and tolerances. Also this was 2003. No social media and world governments eager to suppress the media and information. You'll recall the Arabic shopkeepers were in on the know because of their family in the M.E. You'll also recall how the lady politely decided to omit the details of why she was kicking Sarah out. And Joel and Tommy just told their neighbors to stay inside, not that shit was going down and to run. So while it seems like everything is happening everywhere all at once, theres a good chance that this took time to build up over days and what we saw on the 26th was just the breaking point.

Aside from logistical reasons- like Joel being on Atkins would have him avoid wheat products regularly- it is just the way of conveying the idea through the medium. The writers said they were leaving breadcrumbs (rimshot). The flour theory makes sense until you notice that for that to happen the fungus would've to mutate to resist oven temperatures(bread and cookies must be cooked), at the beginning of the series they talk about a posible mutation that would allow the fungust tu survive the global warming , but that would be like a 5°F-10°F, this would also allowed them to live inside the human body 98,6°F. But from not being able to resist more than 94°F to resist more than 350°F thats a huuuuge jump.

I think you are right about how the people get infected, is a big good explanation how everyone around the world get infected so quickly. I cant believe how a fungus can infect food so quickly and the worst thing is that no one notice because when you look at the food it looks normal without knowing that they are tiny micro organisms of cordycep in the flour or other things.
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 Год назад
The flour is ground up, so it's likely sparse enough to keep any greater fungus bodies from forming, leading to only microscopic pieces developed. And also likely was already on the flour itself, rather than a contamination at the factory. And most farming is automated, where the farmer just drives a machine through a field, and it's also often ground up as it's harvested, and then just processed finer at the factory. So there could have easily been small but visible cordyceps on the grain, but went unnoticed, which were then just ground up into the flour, becoming indistinguishable from the flour.

Paul is correct in what he states in this video. The conversation in the truck smacks of a panicked father picking up on any crumb to reassure his worried kid (and himself) in a situation wherein no one knows what’s going on, not a well informed explanation of the outbreak. The characters are not speaking as experts here, as they have no clue what’s going on. I’ve seen this excuse of being ‘in the city’ as an explanation for the cause of the outbreak, but you’re wrong. It’s obvious that not Joel, Tommy, nor anybody else around actually knows what causes the infection as they have only first heard about it themselves mere hours before looking to escape in the truck with Sarah. It’s obvious that Sarah, in an extremely panicked state, is suggesting something, anything to try to find an excuse as to why they’re safe. Joel was always going to take whatever she said and just agree with her. Like, yes kid, “everything will be alright” when it’s obvious that they are in extreme mortal danger. Did you also believe Joel was speaking as a knowledgeable expert when he said Sarah will be alright after she was shot? Or, was he similarly speaking as a desperate father saying anything reassuring to excuse and deny the reality of their situation? Last, but not least, please explain why they put in all of the MANY references to eating (or, not eating) baked goods and breads that contain yeast (a living fungus) or flour. Why would they bother with all of these references if they were meaningless?! The visibly undercooked biscuits being fed to the old woman who turns first, the cookies Sarah is given (and never eats), that Sarah and Joel eat eggs when they were meant to be eating pancakes, the cake that Joel forgets to pick up, and that Joel is on the Atkins diet, meaning that he's not eating carbs, like bread made with yeast fungus or flour. Why is that all there if it’s not important?

Flour can be used in many different ways, you can find in stores in many food categories like bread, cereal, cakes, you can also find in restaurants and fast food just by flour. Tommy did survive twice in the day by the morning at home and in the evening when he's out eating when one of the customers tried to attack the restaurant personnel and Tommy just got arrested for trying to knock out the customer that is likely infected from eating that contains the contaminated flour. If it's also believed that if the infection originated on Indonesia and evolved to infect more than just rye plants but also coffee beans for example? Indonesia is renowned to have fine flour and coffee products, a world player actually. So I can imagine that shipping contaminated goods across the world in matter of two weeks before Outbreak Day may occurs (Could be less than two weeks) and I think even in 2003 and two weeks duration before shit hit the fan, whoever makes the drugs on U.S sees nice profit to sell drugs to fight against Indonesian rabies. Like you know, that one chapter on World War Z book. The big difference between this book and The Last of Us HBO series is that the drug may be also contaminated with the fungi disease, ONE thing has in common with all of this: Ergot. This fungi disease infects via ingestion. Also Salem Witch Trials which is no way to be coincidental that this actually happened before. But the big question: How did the fungi evolves into same species trying to attack and infect them as well, I doubt Ergot does all of this so maybe this fungi is a combo with something else even if that's naturally mutated.

Ergot poisoning is one known cause of mass hysteria and epidemics of it were quite common since the fungus is impervious to heat and water hence baking doesn't destroy it

There’s a theory that Ergot poisoning was behind the witch trials in Salem.
