What's ironic is that this song's lyrics fit Joel and Ellie's relationship perfectly. "Shall I stay, would it be a sin?" Joel committed a horrible sin out of his immense love for Ellie, but he had to pay for it through death and he knew this. This parallels with Ellie's love for him too while on her quest for vengeance for his death. She's committing a sin as well out of her love for him, and she knows this, but she can't help herself. They both commit these sins to try to hold onto each other, even though it's wrong. "But I can't help falling in love with you" Even though there's so much hurt involved between the two of them and conflict, he can't help the strong paternal love he's developed for his adopted daughter. Neither can she help the love she has in return to him, along with regret of the pain she's caused him. Just like he says in the very last scene we see of him, "If the Lord ever gave me another chance at that moment, I'd do it all over again" because he loves her. 💔😭
