I agree with the dude. Ravers are a serious issue in an apocalyptic scenario, waving their glow sticks around and dancing all over the place, blaring edm music… Total nightmare.

Heh, I love that he kept calling the raiders "ravers", because each time he said it I imagined Joel and Ellie being attacked by club kids waving glowsticks.

The guy who plays Perry, the lieutenant, is Jeffrey Pierce. He played Tommy in the games. So great seeing him in the show.

So happy that they included the joke book. Such a great running gag in the game. All of that leading up to the great diarrhea joke and their bonding moment. And the porno mag was another great inclusion from the game.

I think the thing to remember about Ellie and her fascination with guns is that in the world she's grown up in, having a gun means you're one of the people in power. You have the ability to decide shit for yourself - people with guns tell people without guns what to do, and for an orphan who was raised in a military training orphanage, there is no more concrete symbol of having the power to live your own life on your own terms than possessing a firearm. And it's not just true with FEDRA, either - people like Tess, Joel, and Bill *all* get to make their own choices and they all own and use firearms. That's not an accident.

2:27 the door shutting, in my opinion, symbolized Bill and Frank’s spirits leaving the home. The open window was a nod to the very first screen gamers see playing the game, but also a reminder to viewers of what Bill said he’d do while also showing us where in the home their bodies are. By the way, Tess/Joel told Ellie that out side of the QZ that there were raiders and slavers. Last week, we saw a group of raiders attack Bill, a survivalist. So you chalk survivalist on the board of groups of people out in this new world. Bill stuck to himself, so he wasn’t and would be a threat unless you tried to take his land as those raiders learned in traumatizing fashion…assuming they lived to tell others about their blunder-you know Bill left the burnt corpses where lay as a warning to future raiders. So we have FEDRA, Fireflies, raiders, slavers and survivalist. There are other groups out there, but I’ll let the story explain/reveal as it sees fit. I’m pretty sure that both Bill and Frank are dead. Yes, in the game Bill was alive at this point in the story, but he was also a broken, miserable, bitter old man. He was an interesting character 13 years ago when first presented that way, but I prefer this interpretation of him. He and Frank had one falling out on screen and that was enough. Bill was lonely for four years and didn’t want to go back to that. He chose to check out with the love of his life, Frank, and I think that makes much more sense for this version of Bill. Bill and Frank’s relationship in the game was toxic and tragic. Frank got bit trying to leave Bill. He didn’t want to become an infected so he hung himself on their property-Joel and Ellie find his body and deliver his last letter to Bill, which wasn’t nice to say the least. Anyway, it makes much more sense to believe that what we saw happen happened. Strong evidence suggests that Bill is gone too. We see Frank in his studio panting and we see Bill doing chores like watering the plants-he didn’t care about dusting his home or caring for his lawn before Frank. Bill was a survivalist trying to survive and those things weren’t essential for survival. Frank wanted to change that and he did. Frank taught Bill do enjoy the little things in life. If you can’t enjoy those things, what’s the point of surviving? When Joel and Ellie make it to Bill and Frank’s town, plants are dying, leaves are in the street and nature is starting to over grow man made structures. The Bill that Frank loved would have taken care of these things like he did the plants outside of Frank’s studio if he were still living. 26:29 these would be raiders. This is also why Joel killed Brian. If he hadn’t things would have been much worse for them, as Brian would be able to describe them. You’ll learn soon enough that Joel was once a raider too, which is why he knew their tactics. They are a gang loyal to no one but themselves, and they aren’t to be trusted. 34:56 I do t think Brian was sorry. He was trying to appeal to Ellie, but himself some time since he knows his team is still out there. Think about the guy pretending to be hurt at the start of the ambush. Raiders play on (prey, actually) the empathy of good people and exploit that kindness, quickly turning it into a weakness to gain the upper hand-you don’t help people in this new world. Do you see the risk Bill took with his leap of faith or Frank’s with Joel and Tess? Things worked out for them, but that’s not how things usually go down. What almost always happens is what we saw in this episode. If you want to survive a raider attack in the Last of Us, you have to do what Joel did, and you can’t be sorry about it. You need to keep alert, because the others are coming for you.

I’ve really grown to love this channel in the reaction community so much so that I always hit refresh to see when you upload the next episode reaction. You three are awesome reactors for this series for sure ❤️

From what I gathered what Henry did was snitch to Fedra about something the leader of the milita Kathleen's brother did(probably he was in the fireflies or another guerilla organization) and why being held by Fedra he was beaten to death. This show does a hell of a job like you guys alluded to blurring the lines between good and bad when it comes to living in a post apocalyptic environment. Everyone who's survived in this world has had to of committed some evil acts and done horrible thing's! I Love the small things in this show that so many other shows get wrong, like gas going bad, Joel's hearing in one ear being bad because of all gun shots, even the morbid awkward moment of the young man who got shot by Ellie begging for his life trying to make himself more human and personable. All in all this series has been fantastic so far and very thought provoking on human nature at it's worst and best. One of the aspects of world building in both the game and the TV series is that there is no ultimate "good and bad", there are degrees of each in everyone that Ellie and Joel will encounter. In the game, they did not provide any motivation for what they called "The Hunters" in the game. Providing a bit of backstory to "the Hunters" humanizes them more. This is something they did in the second game by giving a lot of the hunters and other groups you have move through (kill or stealthily avoid) minor dialog to make them appear more human and less "hunter" The killing of Bryan is an example. BTW, there is an old saying that in war, a fatally wounded soldier will always call out for his mother, and having Byran do the same, evokes more of a "soldier" image (not an evil hunter, just a person doing what they feel is right), which further develops the internal conflict Joel has to deal with when he is forced to kill in order to protect; he's not ALWAYS killing an EVIL person, just someone who is on the opposite side of the conflict. Great script writing and character development in an episode that is basically a set up episode for the next one.

The credits song True Faith was used in an ad for part 2 but with Ellie's voice actress singing it. Made me buy a guitar just to learn it and the other covers from the game. That song just gives me goosebumps so hearing it again made me so happy.

I thought I found three awesome people on YT this month, but it turns out I found four. Love this channel, and I'm sure I will enjoy Elise and hubs channel just as much. If you fine folks haven't watched The Expanse, and are fans of sci-fi then me thinks y'all would really enjoy that series. The fans are always on the lookout for new reactions

A cool little detail I noticed was that the people (the 'militia') gathered around Kathleen in a couple of scenes just look like ordinary folk. They may be wearing FEDRA type gear/protection over their civvies, but there's grannies and middle aged men in there, too, along with the teenager who got stabbed. I think Perry the lieutenant looked like he had some actual military training, but the rest not so much. I think the overthrow of the govt that happened before Joel & Ellie got there was pretty messy. This is likely the 'reign of terror' phase of the revolution. Kathleen is a figurehead who is fast getting in over her head because of her need for personal vengeance.

Ugh this episode was so loyal to the game the car scene, the book of joke's, the Hank Williams song. And the episode 5 will come up on this Friday

I always watch the trailer for next episode at the end of the credits, and the showrunner commentary/cast interviews that they do. There's a podcast run by HBO with the showrunners that comes out the day after the new episode drops that delves into the background on each episode as well, that's a good listen.

I've played enough zombie survival games to confirm that in any environment where there is no accountability for killing others, you can trust NO ONE. Unless you know that someone personally, everyone else will try and kill you at the first opportunity that they believe they have the upper hand and or will get away with killing you. Video games might not be real life, but human behavior is human behavior.

Nitpicking, but the episode is actually titled "Please Hold to My Hand", because of the specific line in the Hank Williams song used in the episode.

Great reaction as usual. Hearkens back to Bill's letter about how Joel, like Bill, is the type of guy tough enough and ruthless enough to protect someone. What a cliffhanger, im really waiting for that like 'sinkhole' thing to payoff. I have no idea but I think it's full of fungus or something like that, maybe infected tunneling. Perhaps a setup episode for the real one next week. Oh ps. As you know I love watching non-anime watchers watch anime for the first time (the same reason I started watching you guys), so I, and I think many, would love to see Elise react to something like Demon Slayer. Probably wouldn't start with AoT though lol

My recomendation as a first show for someone who is not into anime: Violet Evergarden, Your Name(movie) and Weathering with you.

Guys, honestly, I watched your fist Last of Us video and then wrote to you that while I wish you the best in the future, it was not for me and I was out. I just, again, in all honesty, could not handle all of the talking. Haha. I ended up deleting the comment because as much as I tried to sound nice in explaining my reasoning to not subscribe and walk away, I ended up sounding like a jerk each and every edit. Well then, after giving up and deleting my comment on that first video, I was all ready to walk away, but as I had opened the second video on Last of Us from you guys already (about Last of Us episode 2) I decided to watch the first few minutes. You blew it out of the water. You took all of the comments about the over talking and you worked to get better. I stopped watching about halfway through that second video to subscribe right away and while I am currently only watching your Last of Us vids, I just want to say how pleased I am that I decided to watch that second video how much I appreciate the effort from you guys to try and improve. The kid, Bryan, was not so far from joel. They both were put in terrible positions in which innocent got hurt in the process. Bryan was human. It’s fair to feel empathetic towards his last moments. Honestly if you dont, ur not considering both human perspectives

I only recently started watching anime so I would recommend the first ones I watched which prob is a good introduction. Your name, a silent voice, let me eat your pancreas . All sad but great stories, your name has such beautiful animation as well.

Great video keep and up the good work. Don't worry about the audio issues. Every channel has growing pains. If you're going to introduce Elise to Anime start with a series that gives a good first impression and is recognized as one of the best in the medium with an amazing soundtrack. Cowboy Bebop. Then you have to worry about subs vs dub. Personally I prefer subs as I find I can immerse myself in the fantastical worlds most Anime live in when there is a foreign language on, it adds to the otherworldliness. However, I can see that it may be overwhelming to a beginner and may turn them away from Anime before they can become acclimated to it. Just as long as she understands many dubs are bad.. Lastly, shoutout to Aha drinks 😄👍🏻

Per you (wonderful) people talking about Bill not being dead. While I don't think Bill is alive.. I did notice and couldn't help but wonder why after the dinner where they both drunk the poisoned wine and supposedly were getting weaker, Bill was pushing Frank somewhere else in the house and not up the stairs. Where was Bill taking Frank? That said, with Frank in a wheelchair, maybe there was an elevator somewhere in the house because at the end of the day, how do you get someone in a wheel chair up the stairs? And if Bill was going somewhere suspicious with Frank, I'm sure he would have been saying something along those lines instead of calmly going along with the ride.

Damn if bill only knew to put some Duran Duran on at the fence they would’ve just raved instead of cutting the fence and being burned and blown up

Since all of this background information on the Hunters is even new to game players, I thought they did well in rounding the characters they've shown so far. Someone else commented something similar, but from what I gathered the group in the city is a resistance group that overthrew FEDRA in this QZ. Kathleen, the lady who seems to be their leader, seems to have lost her brother due to being beaten by FEDRA as some people like her doctor likely snitched on those planning the coup. As far as they know, Henry is one of those snitches and they think that Ellie and Joel are some sort of backup Henry called to help them out. Like Elise mentioned, that may also contribute to their more antagonistic approach to anyone outside of their group. I kind of hope they double down on the idea that Henry is a snitch and not have it be a false accusation. It would round out his character as someone who'd be desperate enough to betray others given that he does have this kid to take care of.

Husband's for Elise? I think a good newbie / starting anime for her is Elfenlied. It's fairly short & digestible, emotional, and not too weird like a lot of others (don't do Neon Genesis Evangelion). If she likes fantasy then maybe Record of Lodoss War. It's pretty much your typical western high fantasy adventurer group that you could also see in like a Dungeons & Dragons scenario. Kathleen's sidekick here is the actor of in game Tommy by the way. Kathleen's obsession and the show humanizing the hunters are definitely some nods towards the sequel though.

I think he was close to the guy who got killed before he got shot so he tried to kill Joel in a blind rage and then when he got paralyzed he realized the one who shot him was just a kid. he couldn't have been that much older either. The horror of a real life situation like that.

I don’t think the people had good intentions even though the boy said “I didn’t know, I can tell them you are good”, just think he was a scared kid when faced with death in front of him. Because they shouted out at the beginning of the fight “give us all your stuff and we can let you go”, I think they would’ve killed them and then took all their stuff, just how we saw all those burned up bodies, and just how Joel told Ellie that he’s been on both sides and had to do what was needed to survive. Outsiders that pass through the city are opportunities for them to find more resources like clothes, shoes, guns, food, etc that they might not have available to them or running out of.

He also could have been saying that he didn't know there was a child there.

The only issue I'm having with this show right now is it's been over twenty years since the incident happened and they're still finding fuel and driving these vehicles around it makes no sense

It was a filler episode, not mad at it just a cliff hanger that showed some good things. The "crumbly ground thing" or a little more of the encounter at the end would have been nice to see. Just to give this episode more life. But, what it does for me knowing what's coming is that the next episode is going to be another one of those hour and 15 minute episodes and it's going to be full of action and drama. This part of the game was still about Ellie and Joel forming a bond and having their first encounter with raiders. Everything after that goes pretty nuts until the end. I expect every episode from here until the finale to be pretty full.
