In this world, they won. There are no doctors or hospitals, no nearby family to help, no home-care nurses (something I am dealing with for my Mom these days). They simply didn't have all the options for outside assistance we have. And still, they got to have 16 good years together and go out on their own terms rather than being taken out by the raiders or down by the fungus. For Bill especially, this was a blessing--he got to have a kind of love he never thought he'd have, and he grew and blossomed under Frank's attentive care. And he did save and protect Frank, who was perhaps a little too trusting for the world they were in. So they both were better for the relationship than they would have been apart--which is the very definition of success.

It was such a beautiful story. It's really the best you could hope for in an apocalypse like this, without all the care we're used to. I'm sorry you and your mom are dealing with this. Here in the US, we really are having a home healthcare crisis from the shortage of available help. I hope you can find someone soon.

What hit me really hard after watching the episode was just realizing that the world fell apart in 2003, which means that in this world same-sex marriage was never legalized in the United States. The first state to legalize it wasn't until 2004. It made the fact that they married one another so much more impactful.

The context of the time period is everything for this story. They cried when kissing because this kind of love story would not have been allowed to happen in 2003. Gay men in their age bracket were still reeling and traumatized from the AIDS epidemic and being publicly gay in this country meant even more harassment and violence then today. This story was masterfully told.

Right?! I'm in my mid 60s so, I lived those years. From my group of about 20 friends, I've been the only one left for decades and only one wasn't taken by aids.I could so identify with Bill and Frank. I even currently live in a small red neck rural area and even in today's world, the "pickins are slim" and I don't have a rainbow flag on my porch. I think this is the most amazing LGBT love story I've ever seen. It can even stand alone.

I love how Bill serves the same purpose for Joel's journey, but from an opposite perspective. In the game, Bill is a cautionary tale of "Joel, this is who you will become if you never let people in." In the show, Bill is a beacon of hope, basically saying, "Joel, this is who you could become if you DO let people in."

Pretty sure the rocks being stacked are a memorial for Tess. In some cultures leaving a stone on a grave is a thing. It's also a mindfulness/meditation thing. While it also CAN be a trail marker, Joel knows this trail so, he doesn't need a marker.

The beauty of this episode is that it subverts our expectations. We've been conditioned through modern storytelling to fear everything, especially the benign, the innocuous. Dolls, children, children with dolls, dolls that look like children, all manner of seemingly harmless and familiar things, all trying to kill you. We expect that any kindness will be answered with violence, that any trust met with betrayal. We as an audience have been primed to fear the most faithful of friends, the most reliable family members - especially in this particular genre of horror - and when we encounter a story about caring and commitment amongst the ruins of a dying world, we don't know how to process it and it hits hard. "I was not expecting this" seems to be the most common refrain, with good reason. This is ostensibly a series about a 'zombie apocalypse' where anyone and everyone can go from being a kindred soul to a mortal threat in an instant and no one is to be trusted, especially other humans. Yet this particular tale is about trust, and love, both matrimonial and romantic. It's about allowing oneself to be vulnerable and in that vulnerability, finding those moments of existence that are both ephemeral and priceless. We expect a calamity, a personal buskin beyond the destruction of our civilization. We anticipate a type of misfortune that doesn't occur. During the worst catastrophe in the history of human kind, we bear witness the best thing to ever happen to these two humans, and it's profound; jarring. We await a devastation that never comes to pass, that expectation of tragedy is subverted by a story of love. We expect blood and destruction; what we get is a masterpiece about small, beautiful lives lived less ordinary. This is one of the best stories ever told on film, in my opinion, and it's based on a video game; we've come a long way from Pong.

In the game, Frank hanged himself coz he was infected. He took his own life before the fungus consumes his body and potentially harmed Bill along the way. In this series, it's different but made to perfection. If you noticed at the end of the Episode 1, the radio of Joel started to play an 80's song, indicating that Bill and Frank are already dead. Joel said that if Bill didn't reset the playlist every few weeks, the system will automatically play the 80's song. So maybe it's already 2 weeks when Bill and Frank died before Joel and Ellie reached their house. It's also on the note that 80's - X which means either in trouble or dead. Other two is 60's - nothing new and 70's- new stocks. If you noticed too that Bill put more crushed medicines in Frank's wine coz Bill don't wanna die first in Frank's arms.

Now this episode has joined that list right next to it. Both beautiful pieces of tv and as a Queer person, both meant a lot to me in a multitude of ways. I wish more people talked about The Magicians simply so that more people could experience how beautiful the Mosaic episode was. I don't know if I'd say that the shoe gave Bill more of a purpose, but rather a different purpose, and an expanded role. Bill in the game works more as a warning example for Joel about what he might become if he doesn't learn to open up to people, while Bill in the show instead works as an example of what Joel can aspire to become.

I'm a white middle-aged working class heterosexual married man who spent twelve years in the Army and most of the rest as a trauma specialist nurse so I've seen some shit. I'd only cried five times since 1979, losing my mum, my dad, my dog, watching Grave of the Fireflies and David Bowie, Episode three fkn wrecked me. That was one of the finest pieces of writing and acting that I have seen in a very long time, when Bill said "I'm satisfied" I lost it, it's stuck with me for over a week it was beautiful.

I'd like to think that the door slamming by itself in the end was Bill and Frank's spirits either leaving the house and moving on. Or they were trying to get Joel away from their bedroom door. But it could also be a reference to the original versions of the game before the PS5 version came out. There used to be doors that would slam shut on their own. after entering a room or a house and walk on through, when you were far enough away, sometime if you turned back and looked, the door would just close on it's own. The school section of the game, the bloater in the gym area, used to have haunted lockers. it was actually a glitch where the locker doors were just slamming open and shut over and over again. I believe the PS5 version removed these glitches.
