When The Last of Us video game was released, it represented something of a landmark for the medium. Its story and setting weren't necessarily unique, but its adult, mature, serious handling of its story certainly felt unique for 2013. The TV adaptation promised so much, and despite a very strong first episode, it ultimately left me feeling frustrated. Very frustrated. Let me tell you why.

There should've been two scenes in the series of Joel and Ellie crossing a room filled with clickers. In the first, they're nervous and uncoordinated. In the second, near the end of the show, they are in sync and working together in silence perfectly. Show us they are a team by the end. And make the world feel more dangerous more often.

"BuT ThE StOrY IsN't aBoUt tHe zOmBiEs!!1!!!!!!!one!!!!!!" *Sigh.* Yeah. There was a LOT of missed potential in general. I'll bet top dollar that the next season will have much more input from Mazin and it'll show. Season 1 just felt rushed out the gate and given Neil Druckmann's stance on the first game it's not surprising. He wants it gone so he can gaslight more people into thinking part 2 has a good plot. Just like the inevitable PC port of part 2 won't be a poorly optimized dumpster fire on arrival.

For me it was mainly the final episode that let me down. It could've easily been a 2 parter but it ended up being the shortest episode of the season. It was so rushed that it felt like a trailer to the real episode, and the ending was so unsatisfying because of it.

Joel killing fireflies in the last episode is like playing with cheats, it takes away the reward of having to go through something dangerous. I mean, Joel got seriously wounded in a fight against 2 guys from a group of 4, but now he can take out a lot more people and not being hurt at all.
@paulwoodford1984

The show had two long pointless filler episodes and six short narrative episodes that were severely rushed. The acting was mediocre, the writing was atrocious and all the tense scenes from, the game were not used. it was a 5 out of 10 show.

@Paul Woodford jfc I hate to imagine what your standards are for good acting. The first half of the season was arguably fucking excellent. The 2 "filler" episodes tell important stories. Bill and Frank was without doubt the best episode. People forget the show is about relationships first and foremost. The second half if the show did lose grip though. I would hardly call it 5/10 or even average, it's still an excellent adaption but nothing beats the game

It felt like they had a list of story beats to hit and it was just trying to get to each story beat as quickly as possible. James Cameron on the first avartar film was asked why a flying scene took so long. What was its purpose, it doesn’t drive the story forward. His answer was that the scene just let you be in the world. I feel like the last of us tv show needed a lot more scenes like that

No, and Cameron is wrong. That's for books. Movies need world building done more efficiently, simultaneous with plot and character arc forwarding. That concept is why Avatar and the prequals by Lucas as so bad, they wallow and get lost in "world building" and end up a bloated mess. The problem with the TV show was they spent more time on the side characters at the exclusion of the main character story.

The show felt rushed, it was forcing emotional bonding without really taking the time to flesh out these relationships and characters. Carol’s death set the precedent, as she was in one episode then dies, and the audience is supposed to feel sad? We barely got to know her.

I couldn't figure out why the season felt so unsatisfying when it was over despite me enjoying most of the episodes themselves, but this really clarified it. It's like the writers went crazy just wanting to expand a all the side characters and forgot to actually characterize the main ones. The big red flag for this was when they just time skip into winter and it's like "joel and ellie are besties now, go"
@damdamfino

I’m glad I’m not alone in this feeling. You’d think that a TV show is long enough, certainly more than just a 2 hour movie, to adapt a video game, but it still somehow felt so rushed. The pacing issue of the TV show is really interesting because it feels like the writers didn't understand what made the game's story work so well. But Neil Drukman - one of the creators of the game & story - is here, so what's going on? The game clearly takes influence from prestige TV, and the cutscenes are paced like so, but when you add in gameplay, suddenly the pacing becomes WAY more book-like. There's so much incidental dialogue and character-building that's just constantly happening for the entire game. Characters come and go, sure, but we spend HOURS with each member of the rotating cast. We've had adaptations like Rosemary's Baby where practically EVERYTHING was adapted successfully. The TV show is kind of like a "greatest hits" album where a lot of the songs are significantly dulled in impact because they came from concept albums and you're just hearing them like they're singles. Ironically the first episode ends with a hit single playing on the radio...I'm sure a talented, young, attractive writer could link that to how the whole show feels like a jukebox musical of story moments.

The show should have been at least 12 episodes. It felt rushed that Joel warmed up to Ellie too fast. And the argument of the lack of infected holds true here. Not saying every episode needs 50 infected, but in the game it helped Joel and Ellie bond through all the survival of having to fight constantly. In the game, they were constantly saving each other, it justified the bond they had by the end. The show felt fake because it didn't earn that same connection.

The rest--particulary the first half of the video--not so much. Probably because I am old as heck and remember old tv, I don't mind the episodic take in this show. This is how adventure shows usually unfolded. There would be a character or characters in a given situation (say, "on the run from the law and trying to prove innocence") and there would be points in the show where the character(s) would address the core story/problem and other points where they would meet folks with their own stories along the way. As an Ancient Person I find that the problem with all Apocalyptic Shows is that, if people behaved like they do in the production then humanity would last just one solitary generation. If that. In the 1970's Terry Nation (inventor of The Daleks) wrote a show (Survivors) about what happens after a worldwide pandemic took society back to pre-industrial times. (he also said the virus came from China but let's leave that there). It was a complicated world. A world where we had to start all over again. We may have to do this at some point, so take notes. Granted most of the programmes are now comic book/graphic novel or PC game based and therefore a bit violence-centric but none of them are about how to keep things going. Or how to fix stuff. It's just killing lots of people without any real consequences. Killing people is traumatic in real life. As Bill Munny says in Unforgiven: "It's a hell of a thing, killin' a man. Take away all he's got, and all he's ever gonna have." LOU needed to outgrow its source material. Unfortunately it hasn't. Killing is only a game when its on a PC.

There's a film industry there, but it's quite small, and in a way, a lot less experienced that LA, new york, or vancouver crews. To then be doing the biggest HBO series, I can see the labor might just be not experienced enough to know what to do with all the extra money. But- given the next season is reportedly going to film in Vancouver- i have high hopes that it might be a bit better with all these issues, given that they're greenlit and it was a hit, the episodes budget could be higher, and tons of huge films are done in vancouver all the time.

I wasn't overly impressed with the first two episodes. It was the one with Bill and Frank that really sold me on the series. From that point on, I found the series interesting an engaging. I should also say I was listening to the podcast in parallel. Maybe that's made a difference but I don't think so. To Georges point about other characters not surviving more than one or two episodes, this is no different to many other shows that have guest stars. It's clear to me there are only two main characters and everyone else is a guest who won't be in it for long. I don't see an issue with this. So at the end of the day, the reason why TLOU1 was a masterpiece to this day was because it was “FATHER SIMULATOR” the game zombie edition. And this dynamic that made the game what it is went from super praised to now even put into question!

As far as adaptations go, it was just alright but the hype surrounding it stopped any negatives criticisms. I loved the game, and I almost hated the show as I felt no tension of the game, nor the emotional connection.. it just kept going on in a direction that the writers wanted to tell their own story but couldn't find a buyer so they instead latched onto this IP and the madlads sidestepped the material and went ahead. Sure the beats might be similar, but the music is totally different and not in a good way.

I feel like the show is a pretty good example of why deliberate and direct adaptations of the source material are not in and of themselves meritorious. They made a significant number of changes to the broader world to facilitate the live action environment, but then it feels like they were really married to having the event and plot structure of the game progress almost identically. And it fails, a lot of the time. It's not as if the show necessarily needed "more" zombie action, but the infected were almost wholly absent from huge sections of the TV show where in the game they are an everpresent obstacle between the big setpieces. The world of the show feels less like a desolate hellscape where most people turned and life outside the few safezones is unlivable, but instead like almost everyone in the world got raptured and the people that were left behind sat around and did nothing for twenty years. Everything is so empty. That might all be nitpicky on the surface, but I would almost argue it's so extreme that the underlying motivation for the story - the possibility that Ellie could be used to help create a cure or treatment - isn't really convincing. I can believe that they would want to make one, but would it be necessary? Because the way the show world is handled, it seems like you could easily survive just by killing off the infected that are already around. And that directly undermines the moral dilemma of the final episode.
@DoggyHateFire
@DoggyHateFire Год назад
Yeah, but if strayed too far from the source material a bunch of people would never stop complaining about it. I also dislike adaptations being too scarred to stray from the source material. The internet and social media has made it to where creators of television series and many movies worry too much about the reaction on social media. I'm not just talking about the "woke" controversies, I mean in general. The worst is when a series goes on for a few seasons and the fan service gets more and more blatant and forced in like the last season of GoT.
@rbfilms4752
@rbfilms4752 Год назад
@@DoggyHateFire I think the reluctance that fans have whenever stories stray from the source material is understandable. Especially for video game adaptations, we've essentially had 30 years of soulless or practically unrelated movies and TV shows being created and at most using the name or aesthetic of the original IP to otherwise make something generic and unrelated. But you're right, and I think the bigger problem that complainers tend to miss is that adaptations being soulless is the bigger issue than not being a 1:1 copy of the source material. No video game movie made by Uwe Boll is good whether you isolate it from the source or otherwise. Likewise, GOT is an example of a show that fell apart because it started to rush through the remaining events and therefore relied a lot on fanservice and cool factor, not because it was different from the "source material" (in fact, the source material for the last seasons basically doesn't exist because the author is so lethargic.) The show diverged from the source canon quite a bit even starting in the first season but for the most part the changes worked in service of telling a decent television story.
@DoggyHateFire
@DoggyHateFire Год назад
@@rbfilms4752 You're right about GoT and source material, I forgot about that, but I think there is still a risk of giving the fans what you think they think they want the longer a series goes. Personally, bad adaptions don't bother me too much because if I don't like something, I can mentally remove it from my mind canon. For me there's only the first Terminator film. I'm just not someone who cares too much about sticking to the game. I already played The Last of Us, a couple times. It doesn't make it much better seeing a film of the same basic plot. I know others feel differently, and that's fine. What I really wanted to see was more world building. I would have absolutely loved a well written series set in the TLoU world. Hell, I think an seasonal anthology series (like Fargo) would be amazing. I wanted to know so much more about what happened in Kansas City and stuff like that.

Georg, I'm a longtime fan and I love your content genuinely so I hope you don't take my comment as an arrogant mockery but rather a way of giving context to the meta surrounding the video game The Last of Us. I was confused when you said that TLOU was somewhat unique for having a "mature" tone as a video game in the year 2013. Since I can't seem to remember you ever talking much about what games you played in your non-podcast videos, I can only assume you played some of the more marketed and popular games in the west. The video game industry used to be much more diverse in genre than film at one point so those games you might have played could have been anything from an arcady collectathon to very cerebral "cinematic games". In any case, the truth is that The Last of Us - the video game, is not a very interesting or unique game in any sense. The game features notoriously awful game design and as you pointed out a very common story/setting. I don't think that Naughty Dog, the studio that made the game, wanted to cash-in on a halfhearted attempt at a zombie story with a human emotional core, the reason why I don't think that is because I read a lot of interviews from one of the directors of the game, the one that isn't Neil Druckmann. I find it very frustrating that when people talk about the success of TLOU, they never mention Bruce Straley, who was co-director of the first TLOU game, and who had a lot of sensibilities that gave that first game its tone and atmosphere that set it apart from TLOU Part 2 which was exclusively directed by Druckmann. So despite my dislike of the game I can see how Straley meant well, that being said it's still very restrictive and features very crude game design that would be fine if the game was an arcady shoot-em-up, but the fact that it clearly wants to be "mature", wants to be taken serious as a narrative, they probably should have either spend more time on making combat encounters more detailed or better integrated. There is a stark contrast between gameplay and scripted cutscenes, which just makes me feel they should have made a movie or TV show to begin with, since none of the interactivity the game offers seems to be significant. The game itself seems to be ashamed of being a game or at the very least doesn't care about the "game part" as long as they can drive home the point through scripted cinematics. You can make a game that is rooted in a sort of real world with genuine drama between characters and have it be mature as well as good, The Last of Us thinks that simply having an okay drama story makes it good or mature. If anything, games have become more immature since TLOU came out, they just mask it by having competent lighting and a somber tone. You might already know these games but I wanted to mention just a few as an example of games that were both pieces of expression with a serious point and also excellent games, instead of being one-OR-the-other, games that were mature before TLOU came out; ICO (2001) & Shadow of the Colossus (2005) - directed by Fumito Ueda The Metal Gear series from 1998 to 2010 - directed by Hideo Kojima Silent Hill (1999) - directed by Keiichiro Toyama Silent Hill 2 (2001) - directed by Masashi Tsuboyama Silent Hill 3 (2003) - directed by Kazuhide Nakazawa The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998) - directed by Toru Osawa, Yoichi Yamada, Eiji Aonuma, Yoshiaki Koizumi, Toshio Iwawaki The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (2000) - directed by Eiji Aonuma, Yoshiaki Koizumi Persona 3 (2006) & Persona 4 (2008) - directed by Katsura Hashino Demon's Souls (2009) & Dark Souls (2011) - directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki Journey (2012) - directed by Jenova Chen

It was solid, but only because the material is already incredible. It's just the game but worse in every way. Some of the casting is terrible and it's insane how you have a big name like Pedro Pascal give such an underwhelming performance compared to Troy Baker. One of the most integral parts to the story is the scene where Ellie confronts Joel about wanting to pawn her off on Tommy and man Pedro's version is just absolute bland compared to Troy's. Troy's Joel is loud, angry, and you can feel the emotion in his voice where as Pedro lacks all of that. Then you have the small meaningful details like how Troy's Joel touches his broken watch whenever he thinks about Sarah. Bella Ramsey got much better as the show ran on but she's far more annoying than the game and I definitely prefer Ashley Johnson's performance. Gaming really has become the best medium to tell a story because you get so immersed actually playing and now acting is on par or better than big budget movies and TV shows.

From a fan of the series -- both games -- I felt the show was good, but not great; certainly not "great", relative to the best HBO series, anyway. What we got, was an abbreviated overview of the game's major beats -- the ones that already had movie-quality cut-scenes in the game. The first game does a great job of building the relationship arch between Joel and Ellie. The show does not, because it was too short, and gave us so few scenes where this would be convincingly demonstrated. This is absolutely critical for the second game's story, given it's squarely and entirely about revenge -- both for Ellie and Abby. My fear is that they didn't really set that up in such a way that the viewers of the show, will be nearly as invested in Joel's character (beyond him being portrayed by Mandalore). Yes, it was faithful to the source material, but to what end? I think to it's detriment, honestly. To that, I would also like to point out that, in many ways, the scenes depicted in the show were executed much better in the game -- especially in the PS5 remastered version. Again, it's a good show, but it's really not what I'd call great. I have a feeling that it will have to follow the second game's story, fairly closely, which makes sense, given the story was never about anything other than Joel and Ellie (saving the world was a McGuffin... rather than the major obstacle or objective of the story). Because of that, I don't see this having more than 2 more seasons that are on this level of quality.

I enjoyed the show a fair bit, but i feel as if they dragged out some things too much and other things not enough. admittadly i have not played the games, so im judging it entirely from the perspective of what i had hoped to see more and or less of. i would have liked to have seen more of the world pre-apocalypse, especially outside of the US. Ellie and Riley making whimsy eyes at one another for almost an entire episode was way too drawn out (and the implication of romance felt cheap). we already know how its going to end, and the whole episode felt like a "you know im going to die, so we're gonna cram as much backstory and personality as we possibly can into a few minutes, and hopefully you'll feel bad when i die" situation. made worse by the lack of actual death. same with episode 3, though it is still one of my favorite episodes. there i felt moreso as if things could have been tightened up a bit more to have more room for Bill's day to day life before meeting frank, possibly even knowing about what the government did to the rural community inhabitants. Henry and Sam were great characters, and i enjoyed their interactions with Ellie and Joel. In contrast, the "revolutionaries" were pretty weak and undercooked. sure, it was fun seeing them be brutal, but the fact that the only really named character from among the revolutionaries was Kathleen, whos energy on screen felt like that of a substitute teacher, was a weak choice. I would have felt bad for the fireflies and Marlene if they weren't such pricks throughout the entire show. so When Joel went Eggs, Ham & Bacon on their self-rightous asses i didn't really care. Maybe if they had been more humble and less "we're cool rebels, bitch" it would have added more weight to their decision to do a procedure that would likely kill Ellie.

That's how I got to watch the TLOU games. Watching it like that, like a movie or a (clears throat) TV show makes it easier to critique the actual HBO TLOU. I mean, without the interactive experience I can still say something is missing, and it feels like the underlying bg white noise of dread and danger was just missing. I wasn't feeling it naturally during the show as I did in the game. The show felt like every episode was ironically like a video game, but in a bad way. Our main characters re-spawning, lives at 100% and fully restocked with added growth points. The lead characters are not going to die and every series and every movie makes it pretty clear who the lead characters are. Also: zombie apocalypse and the horses are still alive? Personally, I didn't mind how they handled Bill & Frank in the sense of them not really playing into the main story. I thought it was super effective to have Joel and Ellie get there and they're already dead, but imo that's a trick you can pull once. I kept getting increasingly concerned as it went along, and while I enjoyed all the episodes on an individual basis (except maybe Left Behind, the writing for that episode felt very sub-standard and it was especially useless to the story while grinding it to a halt) I kept feeling like they had a lot of ground to cover and were moving very slowly. That final episode gave us some great Joel/Ellie interaction, and the whole time I was thinking "why isn't there at least one more episode here? Are we not going to get pretty much anything of them bonding?" and no, we weren't. I respect The Last of Us game more than I like it, I respect it for being ambitious and widening game narrative for a larger audience (imo Spec Ops: The Line is a far more interesting game narrative from slightly before TLOU that didn't get nearly as much attention) but I don't think Neil Druckmann is actually a very good writer, and most of the acclaim he receives is because, let's face it, game writing is graded on a curve. I think if The Last of Us had been a show initially, people wouldn't have cared nearly as much. There are parts where I think the show improved on the game's writing, but so much felt like a missed opportunity that I'm starting to get the feeling that Druckmann doesn't really understand medium on a deep level, and the inherent strengths of each. A lot of the game feels like story segment, stealth segment, action segment, rinse and repeat. A lot of the show felt like very generic TV structure, villain of the week type thing. He's a very tropey writer that I think writes individual scenes of dialogue and moment-to-moment character interactions very well, but falls kinda flat when it comes to story structure and pacing.
