Air Force officer Charles Shelton was classified as a prisoner of war until 1994, making him the last official POW of the Vietnam war. His plane was shot down on April 29th 1965 during a secret reconnaissance mission over Laos. For years his family tried to find out more about his fate.

This Story brings many Fond and Sad Memories for me. I knew the Shelton's and was very close to their Mother. The day she died, a little bit of me died with her. Not a Day goes by that I don't think of them... Remarkable Family! God Bless Them All!

My father was an anti- communist RLA(Royal Lao Army) colonel allied with our US cause in the Indochina Wars. I can't help but weep when I watched this. May God bless Colonel Charles Shelton and his family forever and always. My family and I salute you all.

Of course, it’s not that long ago. Some Vietnam vets are still around, and like me, the children of soldiers of the Vietnam war are still here with memories of our veteran fathers who may have passed already. My father passed in 2010, but I still remember very well his stories of the Vietnam war.

Yes the Vietnamese gave medals to those who killed American soldiers. The more heads the bigger the honor/medals, and the higher the rank, the more honor/more medals. So sad that the world and human kind has to be this way with war. There’s no solution to some of humankind’s problems due to human behavior, that’s why we have wars. It’s just sad brave men and women all over the world have to give their lives for causes that often aren’t just.

I feel bad for the kids & Mom. But- there's always a...- what was he doing in Laos at all &/or Kampuchea? The only people who were flying in Laos were illegally there, transporting heroin, morphine base, codeine &- I guess if it's wanted- opium. All for the CIA's Air America flights. There's a photo of the doors open & the inside of a prop plane filled up w/a pyramidal ∆ of white bars- it seems like it's (±)5' high & each bar's the size of those old pilgrim era bars of soap or horse soap- BIG, almost the size of an average Bible. That's what the Peace Corps was doing & unknown, supposedly, to Kennedy, et al (he started the Peace Corps). This one village elder was found to have a ton of raw, wrapped up in plastic, opium hidden under his own house w/palm thatched roof & maybe on a level of stilts. A camera crew, doing a segment/doc on the Peace Corps & its local success found out about that; they probably smelled it in the air. The Corps' Head Guy acted like he had no idea how that stuff actually got there even though he was living with the people who were growing & thereby harvesting then processing & wrapping it up for a rainy day. While that camera crew was there & filming, taking pics - there's a picture of him holding up a finger as if he's giving the village Chief a serrrious talking to. The Chief naturally looked a little confused & also contrite. I think there's a lesson to be learned by that.🤨

That is so freakin' rude jrjohnryanjr. He was resistant and defiant to his captors, tried escaping captivity numerous times, killed 3 NVA soldiers one of them the interrogator with his chains during interrogation before the other guards subdued him. That is a courageous man who refused to be broken under intense interrogation, torture etc. I served this country and proudly so in the Army from 1995-98 and the Code of Conduct states you must resist your enemy while a POW by all means!
