Lest we forget.
The Last Post performed by MSO Principal Trumpet, Owen Morris, on his uncle's grandfather's bugle.
"My uncle's grandfather brought this bugle back when he returned from France and Belgium in 1919, after the end of World War I in 1918. His name was William Laing, serial number 2366, Sapper in the 2nd Australian Light Railway Operating Company, in the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) Abroad.
We don’t know how he got possession of the bugle nor why he brought it home. The bugle was made in England and he was given it in France or Belgium, or just found it somewhere there during the war. He never played it properly, only for fun at family gatherings. Given the age and journey of the instrument, it is not in perfect condition. The leadpipe is squashed, but the bugle is still playable. It is a significant occasion for me to sound The Last Post on this instrument, which despite not knowing its exact origins, is steeped in the history of our nation."
