This compelling documentary recounts their remarkable history as a legendary alpine fighting force. Although 10th soldiers were superstars, they quickly learned that winter, mountains and the invincible German Army were a deadly combination.
The 10th Mountain Divisions claim to fame begins with the Germans entrenched in Italys heavily fortified mountaintops, blocking the Allied advance.
After losing 15,000 soldiers attempting to capture this critical high ground, U.S. Army brass called up the 10th Mountain Division, and the rest is history. The 10th Mountain turned the tide for the Allies in Italy, revolutionized winter mountain warfare, and inspired a new generation of soldiers.

I am a former 10th mountain division soldier, 3-71cav. Was stationed in Fort Drum, NY 2008-2012 I was an 11B and a 19D. Ironically, my barracks were on Riva ridge loop fort drum, NY. Looking back at everything, I have to say the 10th mountain molded and formed me into the best soldier I could be. Went on to Ranger Batt and just retired. I don't miss the winters at Fort Drum, NY but I sure miss those summers there. They were perfect weather. But the 10th mountain was deployed all the time so we had to enjoy what we could when we could.

My brother served in the 10th on several different times during his time of his career in the army. While he was there he taught and trained solders mountain survival and he went to Northern Iraq close to the border of Turkey. While he was there at Ft. Drum he learned alot of mountain survival skill from the Mohawks American Native Indians at up state New York. He also learned how to adapt and overcome all opticals in mountaineering, thanks to the Mohawk that served in the same unit with my brother and thanks to the 10th command unit and all that served. I Salute you with honor.

These guys came home from WWII and started the ski industry that flourished for nearly 45 years before corporate greed destroyed its glory. I had the honor of meeting many of them at Cooper Hill as a child and Vail as a young adult. They became captains of industry in Colorado. The glory days of skiing live on in my memory thanks to these brave men. True hero’s for what they did and what they created when they were done fighting.

Yep correct, corporate greed & those behind it were the true scum bags. All those who served were true hero's to survive in such harsh conditions. All are pushed beyond their limits even before going to war. Equal to SEAL training on ski's when you look at it

This was an unusually tough documentary to watch. Seeing them climbing up those crumbling mountains where the footing was constantly sliding or pushing through feet of snow all while being fired on was terrifying. Knowing that if you go forward you are walking into a mine field or machinegun fire, but also knowing that retreating means certain death from a counter-attack from above must stretch the endurance to its maximum; not just physical but mental and spiritual as well. And to do it day after day..... I have no words for such bravery and dedication. Thanks to all who fought in that crazy war, I hope they all found a personal peace at the end.

Tom Comiskey - Guess you'd characterize me and all the MIA's with whom I served in Command & Control Detachment, North (CCN), as being "Just" 'Nam Vets who all volunteered for a 130% average casualty rate every 6 months. I take nothing away from those who serve(d) in the 10th Mountain Division or the casualties they have borne. It's a fine and unique unit! However, I'd note that The Wall has MIA's and KIA's who gave "Just" their full measure and deserve to be recognized for more than "Just" a pittance, by way of characterization. Mt snow, carrying their rifles up above their heads while trekking thru the snow - what strength & agility these men had! He was a beast! He loved telling his stories about training & also how hard it was & how good it felt to get over to Italy & help win the war. It is attributed to Congress because it was drafted and enacted as law by Congress. From Wikipedia "February 15, 1862, Senator Henry Wilson, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Military Affairs and the Militia, introduced a resolution for a Medal of Honor for the Army. The resolution (37th Congress, Second Session; Resolution No. 52, 12 Stat. 623-624) was approved by Congress and signed into law on July 12, 1862 ("A Resolution to provide for the Presentation of "Medals of Honor" to the Enlisted Men of the Army and Volunteer Forces who have distinguished, or may distinguish, themselves in Battle during the present Rebellion")" "The four specific statutory sections authorizing the medal, as last amended on August 13, 2018, are as follows: Army: 10 U.S.C. § 7271 Navy and Marine Corps: 10 U.S.C. § 8291 Air Force and Space Force: 10 U.S.C. § 9271 Coast Guard: 14 U.S.C. § 2732 A version is authorized but it has never been awarded. The President may award, and present in the name of Congress, a medal of honor of appropriate design, with ribbons and appurtenances, to a person who while a member of the [Army] [naval service] [Air Force] [Coast Guard], distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty." Because Congress can only declare war, Congress controls the Department of Defense and the Veteran's Administration. The President is Commander and Chief of the Armed Forces, but he can do nothing without the approval of Congress, unless there is a highly mitigating circumstance. That is why some people call it Congressional Medal of Honor because it was drafted and enacted into law by Congress.
